Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown excellent generalization capabilities that have led to the development of numerous models. These models propose various new architectures, tweaking existing architectures with refined training strategies, increasing context length, using high-quality training data, and increasing training time to outperform baselines. Analyzing new developments is crucial for identifying changes that enhance training stability and improve generalization in LLMs. This survey paper comprehensively analyses the LLMs architectures and their categorization, training strategies, training datasets, and performance evaluations and discusses future research directions. Moreover, the paper also discusses the basic building blocks and concepts behind LLMs, followed by a complete overview of LLMs, including their important features and functions. Finally, the paper summarizes significant findings from LLM research and consolidates essential architectural and training strategies for developing advanced LLMs. Given the continuous advancements in LLMs, we intend to regularly update this paper by incorporating new sections and featuring the latest LLM models.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been emerging as a growing public health threat. Early diagnosis of ASD is crucial for timely, effective intervention and treatment. However, conventional diagnosis methods based on communications and behavioral patterns are unreliable for children younger than 2 years of age. Given evidences of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in ASD infants, we resort to a novel deep learning-based method to extract key features from the inherently scarce, class-imbalanced, and heterogeneous structural MR images for early autism diagnosis. Specifically, we propose a Siamese verification framework to extend the scarce data, and an unsupervised compressor to alleviate data imbalance by extracting key features. We also proposed weight constraints to cope with sample heterogeneity by giving different samples different voting weights during validation, and we used Path Signature to unravel meaningful developmental features from the two-time point data longitudinally. Extensive experiments have shown that our method performed well under practical scenarios, transcending existing machine learning methods.
Mixed-signal neuromorphic systems represent a promising solution for solving extreme-edge computing tasks without relying on external computing resources. Their spiking neural network circuits are optimized for processing sensory data on-line in continuous-time. However, their low precision and high variability can severely limit their performance. To address this issue and improve their robustness to inhomogeneities and noise in both their internal state variables and external input signals, we designed on-chip learning circuits with short-term analog dynamics and long-term tristate discretization mechanisms. An additional hysteretic stop-learning mechanism is included to improve stability and automatically disable weight updates when necessary, to enable continuous always-on learning. We designed a spiking neural network with these learning circuits in a prototype chip using a 180 nm CMOS technology. Simulation and silicon measurement results from the prototype chip are presented. These circuits enable the construction of large-scale spiking neural networks with online learning capabilities for real-world edge computing tasks.
Lately, differential privacy (DP) has been introduced in cooperative multiagent reinforcement learning (CMARL) to safeguard the agents' privacy against adversarial inference during knowledge sharing. Nevertheless, we argue that the noise introduced by DP mechanisms may inadvertently give rise to a novel poisoning threat, specifically in the context of private knowledge sharing during CMARL, which remains unexplored in the literature. To address this shortcoming, we present an adaptive, privacy-exploiting, and evasion-resilient localized poisoning attack (PeLPA) that capitalizes on the inherent DP-noise to circumvent anomaly detection systems and hinder the optimal convergence of the CMARL model. We rigorously evaluate our proposed PeLPA attack in diverse environments, encompassing both non-adversarial and multiple-adversarial contexts. Our findings reveal that, in a medium-scale environment, the PeLPA attack with attacker ratios of 20% and 40% can lead to an increase in average steps to goal by 50.69% and 64.41%, respectively. Furthermore, under similar conditions, PeLPA can result in a 1.4x and 1.6x computational time increase in optimal reward attainment and a 1.18x and 1.38x slower convergence for attacker ratios of 20% and 40%, respectively.
In the era of Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twin (DT) is envisioned to empower various areas as a bridge between physical objects and the digital world. Through virtualization and simulation techniques, multiple functions can be achieved by leveraging computing resources. In this process, Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) have become two of the key factors to achieve real-time feedback. However, current works only considered edge servers or cloud servers in the DT system models. Besides, The models ignore the DT with not only one data resource. In this paper, we propose a new DT system model considering a heterogeneous MEC/MCC environment. Each DT in the model is maintained in one of the servers via multiple data collection devices. The offloading decision-making problem is also considered and a new offloading scheme is proposed based on Distributed Deep Learning (DDL). Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can effectively and efficiently decrease the system's average latency and energy consumption. Significant improvement is achieved compared with the baselines under the dynamic environment of DTs.
Guided upsampling is an effective approach for accelerating high-resolution image processing. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective guided upsampling method. Each pixel in the high-resolution image is represented as a linear interpolation of two low-resolution pixels, whose indices and weights are optimized to minimize the upsampling error. The downsampling can be jointly optimized in order to prevent missing small isolated regions. Our method can be derived from the color line model and local color transformations. Compared to previous methods, our method can better preserve detail effects while suppressing artifacts such as bleeding and blurring. It is efficient, easy to implement, and free of sensitive parameters. We evaluate the proposed method with a wide range of image operators, and show its advantages through quantitative and qualitative analysis. We demonstrate the advantages of our method for both interactive image editing and real-time high-resolution video processing. In particular, for interactive editing, the joint optimization can be precomputed, thus allowing for instant feedback without hardware acceleration.
We present Blocks2World, a novel method for 3D scene rendering and editing that leverages a two-step process: convex decomposition of images and conditioned synthesis. Our technique begins by extracting 3D parallelepipeds from various objects in a given scene using convex decomposition, thus obtaining a primitive representation of the scene. These primitives are then utilized to generate paired data through simple ray-traced depth maps. The next stage involves training a conditioned model that learns to generate images from the 2D-rendered convex primitives. This step establishes a direct mapping between the 3D model and its 2D representation, effectively learning the transition from a 3D model to an image. Once the model is fully trained, it offers remarkable control over the synthesis of novel and edited scenes. This is achieved by manipulating the primitives at test time, including translating or adding them, thereby enabling a highly customizable scene rendering process. Our method provides a fresh perspective on 3D scene rendering and editing, offering control and flexibility. It opens up new avenues for research and applications in the field, including authoring and data augmentation.
Software vulnerabilities leading to various detriments such as crashes, data loss, and security breaches, significantly hinder the quality, affecting the market adoption of software applications and systems. Although traditional methods such as automated software testing, fault localization, and repair have been intensively studied, static analysis tools are most commonly used and have an inherent false positives rate, posing a solid challenge to developer productivity. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a promising solution to these persistent issues. Among these, FalconLLM has shown substantial potential in identifying intricate patterns and complex vulnerabilities, hence crucial in software vulnerability detection. In this paper, for the first time, FalconLLM is being fine-tuned for cybersecurity applications, thus introducing SecureFalcon, an innovative model architecture built upon FalconLLM. SecureFalcon is trained to differentiate between vulnerable and non-vulnerable C code samples. We build a new training dataset, FormAI, constructed thanks to Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and formal verification to evaluate its performance. SecureFalcon achieved an impressive 94% accuracy rate in detecting software vulnerabilities, emphasizing its significant potential to redefine software vulnerability detection methods in cybersecurity.
In this work, we investigate a more realistic unsupervised multimodal machine translation (UMMT) setup, inference-time image-free UMMT, where the model is trained with source-text image pairs, and tested with only source-text inputs. First, we represent the input images and texts with the visual and language scene graphs (SG), where such fine-grained vision-language features ensure a holistic understanding of the semantics. To enable pure-text input during inference, we devise a visual scene hallucination mechanism that dynamically generates pseudo visual SG from the given textual SG. Several SG-pivoting based learning objectives are introduced for unsupervised translation training. On the benchmark Multi30K data, our SG-based method outperforms the best-performing baseline by significant BLEU scores on the task and setup, helping yield translations with better completeness, relevance and fluency without relying on paired images. Further in-depth analyses reveal how our model advances in the task setting.
The two-time scale nature of SAC, which is an actor-critic algorithm, is characterised by the fact that the critic estimate has not converged for the actor at any given time, but since the critic learns faster than the actor, it ensures eventual consistency between the two. Various strategies have been introduced in literature to learn better gradient estimates to help achieve better convergence. Since gradient estimates depend upon the critic, we posit that improving the critic can provide a better gradient estimate for the actor at each time. Utilizing this, we propose Soft Actor Retrospective Critic (SARC), where we augment the SAC critic loss with another loss term - retrospective loss - leading to faster critic convergence and consequently, better policy gradient estimates for the actor. An existing implementation of SAC can be easily adapted to SARC with minimal modifications. Through extensive experimentation and analysis, we show that SARC provides consistent improvement over SAC on benchmark environments.
