Human-AI collaborative writing has been greatly facilitated with the help of modern large language models (LLM), e.g., ChatGPT. While admitting the convenience brought by technology advancement, educators also have concerns that students might leverage LLM to partially complete their writing assignment and pass off the human-AI hybrid text as their original work. Driven by such concerns, in this study, we investigated the automatic detection of Human-AI hybrid text in education, where we formalized the hybrid text detection as a boundary detection problem, i.e., identifying the transition points between human-written content and AI-generated content. We constructed a hybrid essay dataset by partially removing sentences from the original student-written essays and then instructing ChatGPT to fill in for the incomplete essays. Then we proposed a two-step detection approach where we (1) Separated AI-generated content from human-written content during the embedding learning process; and (2) Calculated the distances between every two adjacent prototypes (a prototype is the mean of a set of consecutive sentences from the hybrid text in the embedding space) and assumed that the boundaries exist between the two prototypes that have the furthest distance from each other. Through extensive experiments, we summarized the following main findings: (1) The proposed approach consistently outperformed the baseline methods across different experiment settings; (2) The embedding learning process (i.e., step 1) can significantly boost the performance of the proposed approach; (3) When detecting boundaries for single-boundary hybrid essays, the performance of the proposed approach could be enhanced by adopting a relatively large prototype size, leading to a $22$\% improvement (against the second-best baseline method) in the in-domain setting and an $18$\% improvement in the out-of-domain setting.
The uniform information density (UID) hypothesis states that humans tend to distribute information roughly evenly across an utterance or discourse. Early evidence in support of the UID hypothesis came from Genzel & Charniak (2002), which proposed an entropy rate constancy principle based on the probability of English text under n-gram language models. We re-evaluate the claims of Genzel & Charniak (2002) with neural language models, failing to find clear evidence in support of entropy rate constancy. We conduct a range of experiments across datasets, model sizes, and languages and discuss implications for the uniform information density hypothesis and linguistic theories of efficient communication more broadly.
Despite recent progress in text-to-SQL parsing, current semantic parsers are still not accurate enough for practical use. In this paper, we investigate how to build automatic text-to-SQL error correction models. Noticing that token-level edits are out of context and sometimes ambiguous, we propose building clause-level edit models instead. Besides, while most language models of code are not specifically pre-trained for SQL, they know common data structures and their operations in programming languages such as Python. Thus, we propose a novel representation for SQL queries and their edits that adheres more closely to the pre-training corpora of language models of code. Our error correction model improves the exact set match accuracy of different parsers by 2.4-6.5 and obtains up to 4.3 point absolute improvement over two strong baselines. The CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training) model and its variants are becoming the de facto backbone in many applications. However, training a CLIP model from hundreds of millions of image-text pairs can be prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, the conventional CLIP model doesn't differentiate between the visual semantics and meaning of text regions embedded in images. This can lead to non-robustness when the text in the embedded region doesn't match the image's visual appearance. In this paper, we discuss two effective approaches to improve the efficiency and robustness of CLIP training: (1) augmenting the training dataset while maintaining the same number of optimization steps, and (2) filtering out samples that contain text regions in the image. By doing so, we significantly improve the classification and retrieval accuracy on public benchmarks like ImageNet and CoCo. Filtering out images with text regions also protects the model from typographic attacks. To verify this, we build a new dataset named ImageNet with Adversarial Text Regions (ImageNet-Attr). Our filter-based CLIP model demonstrates a top-1 accuracy of 68.78\%, outperforming previous models whose accuracy was all below 50\%.
To interact with humans in the world, agents need to understand the diverse types of language that people use, relate them to the visual world, and act based on them. While current agents learn to execute simple language instructions from task rewards, we aim to build agents that leverage diverse language that conveys general knowledge, describes the state of the world, provides interactive feedback, and more. Our key idea is that language helps agents predict the future: what will be observed, how the world will behave, and which situations will be rewarded. This perspective unifies language understanding with future prediction as a powerful self-supervised learning objective. We present Dynalang, an agent that learns a multimodal world model that predicts future text and image representations and learns to act from imagined model rollouts. Unlike traditional agents that use language only to predict actions, Dynalang acquires rich language understanding by using past language also to predict future language, video, and rewards. In addition to learning from online interaction in an environment, Dynalang can be pretrained on datasets of text, video, or both without actions or rewards. From using language hints in grid worlds to navigating photorealistic scans of homes, Dynalang utilizes diverse types of language to improve task performance, including environment descriptions, game rules, and instructions.
Randomly masking text spans in ordinary texts in the pre-training stage hardly allows models to acquire the ability to generate simple texts. It can hurt the performance of pre-trained models on text simplification tasks. In this paper, we propose a new continued pre-training strategy to teach the pre-trained model to generate simple texts. We continue pre-training BART, a representative model, to obtain SimpleBART. It consistently and significantly improves the results on lexical simplification, sentence simplification, and document-level simplification tasks over BART. At the end, we compare SimpleBART with several representative large language models (LLMs).
Locating a specific mobile application screen from existing repositories is restricted to basic keyword searches, such as Google Image Search, or necessitates a complete query screen image, as in the case of Swire. However, interactive partial sketch-based solutions like PSDoodle have limitations, including inaccuracy and an inability to consider text appearing on the screen. A potentially effective solution involves implementing a system that provides interactive partial sketching functionality for efficiently structuring user interface elements. Additionally, the system should incorporate text queries to enhance its capabilities further. Our approach, TpD, represents the pioneering effort to enable an iterative search of screens by combining interactive sketching and keyword search techniques. TpD is built on a combination of the Rico repository of approximately 58k Android app screens and the PSDoodle. Our evaluation with third-party software developers showed that PSDoodle provided higher top-10 screen retrieval accuracy than state-of-the-art Swire and required less time to complete a query than other interactive solutions.
Large language models achieve state-of-the-art performance on sequence generation evaluation, but typically have a large number of parameters. This is a computational challenge as presented by applying their evaluation capability at scale. To overcome the challenge, in this paper, we propose \textbf{ECT}, an \textbf{e}valuation \textbf{c}apability \textbf{t}ransfer method, to transfer the evaluation capability from LLMs to relatively lightweight language models. Based on the proposed ECT, we learn various evaluation models from ChatGPT, and employ them as reward models to improve sequence generation models via reinforcement learning and reranking approaches. Experimental results on machine translation, text style transfer, and summarization tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of our ECT. Notably, applying the learned evaluation models to sequence generation models results in better generated sequences as evaluated by commonly used metrics and ChatGPT.
Image-text contrastive models such as CLIP are useful for a variety of downstream applications including zero-shot classification, image-text retrieval and transfer learning. However, these contrastively trained vision-language models often fail on compositional visio-linguistic tasks such as Winoground with performance equivalent to random chance. In our paper, we address this issue and propose a sample-efficient light-weight method called SDS-CLIP to improve the compositional visio-linguistic reasoning capabilities of CLIP. The core idea of our method is to use differentiable image parameterizations to fine-tune CLIP with a distillation objective from large text-to-image generative models such as Stable-Diffusion which are relatively good at visio-linguistic reasoning tasks. On the challenging Winoground compositional reasoning benchmark, our method improves the absolute visio-linguistic performance of different CLIP models by up to 7%, while on the ARO dataset, our method improves the visio-linguistic performance by upto 3%. As a byproduct of inducing visio-linguistic reasoning into CLIP, we also find that the zero-shot performance improves marginally on a variety of downstream datasets. Our method reinforces that carefully designed distillation objectives from generative models can be leveraged to extend existing contrastive image-text models with improved visio-linguistic reasoning capabilities.
Videos for mobile devices become the most popular access to share and acquire information recently. For the convenience of users' creation, in this paper, we present a system, namely MobileVidFactory, to automatically generate vertical mobile videos where users only need to give simple texts mainly. Our system consists of two parts: basic and customized generation. In the basic generation, we take advantage of the pretrained image diffusion model, and adapt it to a high-quality open-domain vertical video generator for mobile devices. As for the audio, by retrieving from our big database, our system matches a suitable background sound for the video. Additionally to produce customized content, our system allows users to add specified screen texts to the video for enriching visual expression, and specify texts for automatic reading with optional voices as they like.
