MTG: A Benchmarking Suite for Multilingual Text Generation

We introduce MTG, a new benchmark suite for training and evaluating multilingual text generation. It is the first and largest text generation benchmark with 120k human-annotated multi-way parallel data for three tasks (story generation, question generation, and title generation) across four languages (English, German, French, and Spanish). Based on it, we set various evaluation scenarios and make a deep analysis of several popular multilingual generation models from different aspects. Our benchmark suite will encourage the multilingualism for text generation community with more human-annotated parallel data and more diverse generation scenarios.

Evaluating the Morphosyntactic Well-formedness of Generated Texts

Text generation systems are ubiquitous in natural language processing applications. However, evaluation of these systems remains a challenge, especially in multilingual settings. In this paper, we propose L'AMBRE -- a metric to evaluate the morphosyntactic well-formedness of text using its dependency parse and morphosyntactic rules of the language. We present a way to automatically extract various rules governing morphosyntax directly from dependency treebanks. To tackle the noisy outputs from text generation systems, we propose a simple methodology to train robust parsers. We show the effectiveness of our metric on the task of machine translation through a diachronic study of systems translating into morphologically-rich languages.

The jsRealB Text Realizer: Organization and Use Cases

This paper describes the design principles behind jsRealB, a surface realizer written in JavaScript for English or French sentences from a specification inspired by the constituent syntax formalism. It can be used either within a web page or as a node .js module. We show that the seemingly simple process of text realization involves many interesting implementation challenges in order to take into account the specifics of each language. jsRealB has a large coverage of English and French and has been used to develop realistic data-to-text applications and to reproduce existing literary texts and sentences with Universal Dependency annotations. Its source code and that of its applications are available on GitHub.

RuBioRoBERTa: a pre-trained biomedical language model for Russian language biomedical text mining

This paper presents several BERT-based models for Russian language biomedical text mining (RuBioBERT, RuBioRoBERTa). The models are pre-trained on a corpus of freely available texts in the Russian biomedical domain. With this pre-training, our models demonstrate state-of-the-art results on RuMedBench - Russian medical language understanding benchmark that covers a diverse set of tasks, including text classification, question answering, natural language inference, and named entity recognition.

Data-to-text Generation with Macro Planning

Recent approaches to data-to-text generation have adopted the very successful encoder-decoder architecture or variants thereof. These models generate text which is fluent (but often imprecise) and perform quite poorly at selecting appropriate content and ordering it coherently. To overcome some of these issues, we propose a neural model with a macro planning stage followed by a generation stage reminiscent of traditional methods which embrace separate modules for planning and surface realization. Macro plans represent high level organization of important content such as entities, events and their interactions; they are learnt from data and given as input to the generator. Extensive experiments on two data-to-text benchmarks (RotoWire and MLB) show that our approach outperforms competitive baselines in terms of automatic and human evaluation.

CUT: Controllable Unsupervised Text Simplification

In this paper, we focus on the challenge of learning controllable text simplifications in unsupervised settings. While this problem has been previously discussed for supervised learning algorithms, the literature on the analogies in unsupervised methods is scarse. We propose two unsupervised mechanisms for controlling the output complexity of the generated texts, namely, back translation with control tokens (a learning-based approach) and simplicity-aware beam search (decoding-based approach). We show that by nudging a back-translation algorithm to understand the relative simplicity of a text in comparison to its noisy translation, the algorithm self-supervises itself to produce the output of the desired complexity. This approach achieves competitive performance on well-established benchmarks: SARI score of 46.88% and FKGL of 3.65% on the Newsela dataset.

Kernelized Bayesian Softmax for Text Generation

Neural models for text generation require a softmax layer with proper token embeddings during the decoding phase. Most existing approaches adopt single point embedding for each token. However, a word may have multiple senses according to different context, some of which might be distinct. In this paper, we propose KerBS, a novel approach for learning better embeddings for text generation. KerBS embodies two advantages: (a) it employs a Bayesian composition of embeddings for words with multiple senses; (b) it is adaptive to semantic variances of words and robust to rare sentence context by imposing learned kernels to capture the closeness of words (senses) in the embedding space. Empirical studies show that KerBS significantly boosts the performance of several text generation tasks.

Scene Text Visual Question Answering

Current visual question answering datasets do not consider the rich semantic information conveyed by text within an image. In this work, we present a new dataset, ST-VQA, that aims to highlight the importance of exploiting high-level semantic information present in images as textual cues in the VQA process. We use this dataset to define a series of tasks of increasing difficulty for which reading the scene text in the context provided by the visual information is necessary to reason and generate an appropriate answer. We propose a new evaluation metric for these tasks to account both for reasoning errors as well as shortcomings of the text recognition module. In addition we put forward a series of baseline methods, which provide further insight to the newly released dataset, and set the scene for further research.

GILT: Generating Images from Long Text

Creating an image reflecting the content of a long text is a complex process that requires a sense of creativity. For example, creating a book cover or a movie poster based on their summary or a food image based on its recipe. In this paper we present the new task of generating images from long text that does not describe the visual content of the image directly. For this, we build a system for generating high-resolution 256 $\times$ 256 images of food conditioned on their recipes. The relation between the recipe text (without its title) to the visual content of the image is vague, and the textual structure of recipes is complex, consisting of two sections (ingredients and instructions) both containing multiple sentences. We used the recipe1M dataset to train and evaluate our model that is based on a the StackGAN-v2 architecture.

Investigating the Working of Text Classifiers

Text classification is one of the most widely studied tasks in natural language processing. Motivated by the principle of compositionality, large multilayer neural network models have been employed for this task in an attempt to effectively utilize the constituent expressions. Almost all of the reported work train large networks using discriminative approaches, which come with a caveat of no proper capacity control, as they tend to latch on to any signal that may not generalize. Using various recent state-of-the-art approaches for text classification, we explore whether these models actually learn to compose the meaning of the sentences or still just focus on some keywords or lexicons for classifying the document. To test our hypothesis, we carefully construct datasets where the training and test splits have no direct overlap of such lexicons, but overall language structure would be similar. We study various text classifiers and observe that there is a big performance drop on these datasets. Finally, we show that even simple models with our proposed regularization techniques, which disincentivize focusing on key lexicons, can substantially improve classification accuracy.
