In this paper we propose a new Deep Learning (DL) approach for message classification. Our method is based on the state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing (NLP) building blocks, combined with a novel technique for infusing the meta-data input that is typically available in messages such as the sender information, timestamps, attached image, audio, affiliations, and more. As we demonstrate throughout the paper, going beyond the mere text by leveraging all available channels in the message, could yield an improved representation and higher classification accuracy. To achieve message representation, each type of input is processed in a dedicated block in the neural network architecture that is suitable for the data type. Such an implementation enables training all blocks together simultaneously, and forming cross channels features in the network. We show in the Experiments Section that in some cases, message's meta-data holds an additional information that cannot be extracted just from the text, and when using this information we achieve better performance. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our multi-modality block approach outperforms other approaches for injecting the meta data to the the text classifier.
Graph neural networks (GNNs) have shown high potential for a variety of real-world, challenging applications, but one of the major obstacles in GNN research is the lack of large-scale flexible datasets. Most existing public datasets for GNNs are relatively small, which limits the ability of GNNs to generalize to unseen data. The few existing large-scale graph datasets provide very limited labeled data. This makes it difficult to determine if the GNN model's low accuracy for unseen data is inherently due to insufficient training data or if the model failed to generalize. Additionally, datasets used to train GNNs need to offer flexibility to enable a thorough study of the impact of various factors while training GNN models. In this work, we introduce the Illinois Graph Benchmark (IGB), a research dataset tool that the developers can use to train, scrutinize and systematically evaluate GNN models with high fidelity. IGB includes both homogeneous and heterogeneous graphs of enormous sizes, with more than 40% of their nodes labeled. Compared to the largest graph datasets publicly available, the IGB provides over 162X more labeled data for deep learning practitioners and developers to create and evaluate models with higher accuracy. The IGB dataset is designed to be flexible, enabling the study of various GNN architectures, embedding generation techniques, and analyzing system performance issues. IGB is open-sourced, supports DGL and PyG frameworks, and comes with releases of the raw text that we believe foster emerging language models and GNN research projects. Large-scale foundation models (e.g., CLIP) have shown promising zero-shot generalization performance on downstream tasks by leveraging carefully designed language prompts. However, despite their success, most prompt learning techniques tend to underperform in the presence of domain shift. Our study addresses this problem and, to improve CLIP's generalization ability across domains, proposes \textsc{StyLIP}, a novel approach for Domain Generalization (DG) based on a domain-agnostic prompt learning strategy. In the absence of explicit domain knowledge, we aim to disentangle the visual style and the content information extracted from the pre-trained CLIP in the prompts so they can be effortlessly adapted to novel domains during inference. Furthermore, we consider a set of style projectors to learn the prompt tokens directly from these multi-scale style features, and the generated prompt embeddings are later fused with the multi-scale visual features learned through a content projector. The projectors are contrastively trained, given CLIP's frozen vision and text encoders. We present extensive experiments in five different DG settings on multiple benchmarks, demonstrating that \textsc{StyLIP} consistently outperforms the relevant state-of-the-art methods.
End-to-end speech-to-text translation models are often initialized with pre-trained speech encoder and pre-trained text decoder. This leads to a significant training gap between pre-training and fine-tuning, largely due to the modality differences between speech outputs from the encoder and text inputs to the decoder. In this work, we aim to bridge the modality gap between speech and text to improve translation quality. We propose M-Adapter, a novel Transformer-based module, to adapt speech representations to text. While shrinking the speech sequence, M-Adapter produces features desired for speech-to-text translation via modelling global and local dependencies of a speech sequence. Our experimental results show that our model outperforms a strong baseline by up to 1 BLEU score on the Must-C En$\rightarrow$DE dataset.\footnote{Our code is available at https://github.com/mingzi151/w2v2-st.}
Text-guided image editing models have shown remarkable results. However, there remain two problems. First, they employ fixed manipulation modules for various editing requirements (e.g., color changing, texture changing, content adding and removing), which result in over-editing or insufficient editing. Second, they do not clearly distinguish between text-required parts and text-irrelevant parts, which leads to inaccurate editing. To solve these limitations, we propose: (i) a Dynamic Editing Block (DEBlock) which combines spatial- and channel-wise manipulations dynamically for various editing requirements. (ii) a Combination Weights Predictor (CWP) which predicts the combination weights for DEBlock according to the inference on text and visual features. (iii) a Dynamic text-adaptive Convolution Block (DCBlock) which queries source image features to distinguish text-required parts and text-irrelevant parts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our DE-Net achieves excellent performance and manipulates source images more effectively and accurately. The inference of politically-charged information from text data is a popular research topic in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at both text- and author-level. In recent years, studies of this kind have been implemented with the aid of representations from transformers such as BERT. Despite considerable success, however, we may ask whether results may be improved even further by combining transformed-based models with additional knowledge representations. To shed light on this issue, the present work describes a series of experiments to compare alternative model configurations for political inference from text in both English and Portuguese languages. Results suggest that certain text representations - in particular, the combined use of BERT pre-trained language models with a syntactic dependency model - may outperform the alternatives across multiple experimental settings, making a potentially strong case for further research in the use of heterogeneous text representations in these and possibly other NLP tasks.
Text-writing robots have been used in assistive writing and drawing applications. However, robots do not convey emotional tones in the writing process due to the lack of behaviors humans typically adopt. To examine how people interpret designed robotic expressions of emotion through both movements and textual output, we used a pen-plotting robot to generate texts by performing human-like behaviors like stop-and-go, speed, and pressure variation. We examined how people convey emotion in the writing process by observing how they wrote in different emotional contexts. We then mapped these human expressions during writing to the handwriting robot and measured how well other participants understood the robot's affective expression. We found that textual output was the strongest determinant of participants' ability to perceive the robot's emotions, whereas parameters of gestural movements of the robots like speed, fluency, pressure, size, and acceleration could be useful for understanding the context of the writing expression.
Prompt-based methods with large pre-trained language models (PLMs) have shown impressive unaided performance across many NLP tasks. These models improve even further with the addition of a few labeled in-context exemplars to guide output generation. However, for more complex tasks such as dialogue state tracking (DST), designing prompts that reliably convey the desired intent is nontrivial, leading to unstable results. Furthermore, building in-context exemplars for dialogue tasks is difficult because conversational contexts are long while model input lengths are relatively short. To overcome these issues we first adapt a meta-learning scheme to the dialogue domain which stabilizes the ability of the model to perform well under various prompts. We additionally design a novel training method to improve upon vanilla retrieval mechanisms to find ideal in-context examples. Finally, we introduce a saliency model to limit dialogue text length, allowing us to include more exemplars per query. In effect, we are able to achieve highly competitive results for few-shot DST on MultiWOZ.
Previous works on emotion recognition in conversation (ERC) follow a two-step paradigm, which can be summarized as first producing context-independent features via fine-tuning pretrained language models (PLMs) and then analyzing contextual information and dialogue structure information among the extracted features. However, we discover that this paradigm has several limitations. Accordingly, we propose a novel paradigm, i.e., exploring contextual information and dialogue structure information in the fine-tuning step, and adapting the PLM to the ERC task in terms of input text, classification structure, and training strategy. Furthermore, we develop our model BERT-ERC according to the proposed paradigm, which improves ERC performance in three aspects, namely suggestive text, fine-grained classification module, and two-stage training. Compared to existing methods, BERT-ERC achieves substantial improvement on four datasets, indicating its effectiveness and generalization capability. Besides, we also set up the limited resources scenario and the online prediction scenario to approximate real-world scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed paradigm significantly outperforms the previous one and can be adapted to various scenes.
Language models trained on large text corpora encode rich distributional information about real-world environments and action sequences. This information plays a crucial role in current approaches to language processing tasks like question answering and instruction generation. We describe how to leverage language models for *non-linguistic* perception and control tasks. Our approach casts labeling and decision-making as inference in probabilistic graphical models in which language models parameterize prior distributions over labels, decisions and parameters, making it possible to integrate uncertain observations and incomplete background knowledge in a principled way. Applied to semantic segmentation, household navigation, and activity recognition tasks, this approach improves predictions on rare, out-of-distribution, and structurally novel inputs.
