Isomer: Transfer enhanced Dual-Channel Heterogeneous Dependency Attention Network for Aspect-based Sentiment Classification

Aspect-based sentiment classification aims to predict the sentiment polarity of a specific aspect in a sentence. However, most existing methods attempt to construct dependency relations into a homogeneous dependency graph with the sparsity and ambiguity, which cannot cover the comprehensive contextualized features of short texts or consider any additional node types or semantic relation information. To solve those issues, we present a sentiment analysis model named Isomer, which performs a dual-channel attention on heterogeneous dependency graphs incorporating external knowledge, to effectively integrate other additional information. Specifically, a transfer-enhanced dual-channel heterogeneous dependency attention network is devised in Isomer to model short texts using heterogeneous dependency graphs. These heterogeneous dependency graphs not only consider different types of information but also incorporate external knowledge. Experiments studies show that our model outperforms recent models on benchmark datasets. Furthermore, the results suggest that our method captures the importance of various information features to focus on informative contextual words.

A novel approach to sentiment analysis in Persian using discourse and external semantic information

Sentiment analysis attempts to identify, extract and quantify affective states and subjective information from various types of data such as text, audio, and video. Many approaches have been proposed to extract the sentiment of individuals from documents written in natural languages in recent years. The majority of these approaches have focused on English, while resource-lean languages such as Persian suffer from the lack of research work and language resources. Due to this gap in Persian, the current work is accomplished to introduce new methods for sentiment analysis which have been applied on Persian. The proposed approach in this paper is two-fold: The first one is based on classifier combination, and the second one is based on deep neural networks which benefits from word embedding vectors. Both approaches takes advantage of local discourse information and external knowledge bases, and also cover several language issues such as negation and intensification, andaddresses different granularity levels, namely word, aspect, sentence, phrase and document-levels. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, a Persian dataset is collected from Persian hotel reviews referred as hotel reviews. The proposed approach has been compared to counterpart methods based on the benchmark dataset. The experimental results approve the effectiveness of the proposed approach when compared to related works.

A Dependency Syntactic Knowledge Augmented Interactive Architecture for End-to-End Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis

The aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) task remains to be a long-standing challenge, which aims to extract the aspect term and then identify its sentiment orientation.In previous approaches, the explicit syntactic structure of a sentence, which reflects the syntax properties of natural language and hence is intuitively crucial for aspect term extraction and sentiment recognition, is typically neglected or insufficiently modeled. In this paper, we thus propose a novel dependency syntactic knowledge augmented interactive architecture with multi-task learning for end-to-end ABSA. This model is capable of fully exploiting the syntactic knowledge (dependency relations and types) by leveraging a well-designed Dependency Relation Embedded Graph Convolutional Network (DreGcn). Additionally, we design a simple yet effective message-passing mechanism to ensure that our model learns from multiple related tasks in a multi-task learning framework. Extensive experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, which significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. Besides, we achieve further improvements by using BERT as an additional feature extractor.

A Generative Language Model for Few-shot Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis is an important task in natural language processing. In recent works, pre-trained language models are often used to achieve state-of-the-art results, especially when training data is scarce. It is common to fine-tune on the downstream task, usually by adding task-specific layers on top of the model. In this paper, we focus on aspect-based sentiment analysis, which involves extracting aspect term, category, and predicting their corresponding polarities. In particular, we are interested in few-shot settings. We propose to reformulate the extraction and prediction tasks into the sequence generation task, using a generative language model with unidirectional attention (GPT2 is used unless stated otherwise). This way, the model learns to accomplish the tasks via language generation without the need of training task-specific layers. Our evaluation results on the single-task polarity prediction show that our approach outperforms the previous state-of-the-art (based on BERT) on average performance by a large margins in few-shot and full-shot settings. More importantly, our generative approach significantly reduces the model variance caused by low-resource data. We further demonstrate that the proposed generative language model can handle joint and multi-task settings, unlike previous work. We observe that the proposed sequence generation method achieves further improved performances on polarity prediction when the model is trained via joint and multi-task settings. Further evaluation on similar sentiment analysis datasets, SST-2, SST- and OOS intent detection validates the superiority and noise robustness of generative language model in few-shot settings.

Idioms-Proverbs Lexicon for Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Sentiment Analysis

Although, the fair amount of works in sentiment analysis (SA) and opinion mining (OM) systems in the last decade and with respect to the performance of these systems, but it still not desired performance, especially for morphologically-Rich Language (MRL) such as Arabic, due to the complexities and challenges exist in the nature of the languages itself. One of these challenges is the detection of idioms or proverbs phrases within the writer text or comment. An idiom or proverb is a form of speech or an expression that is peculiar to itself. Grammatically, it cannot be understood from the individual meanings of its elements and can yield different sentiment when treats as separate words. Consequently, In order to facilitate the task of detection and classification of lexical phrases for automated SA systems, this paper presents AIPSeLEX a novel idioms/ proverbs sentiment lexicon for modern standard Arabic (MSA) and colloquial. AIPSeLEX is manually collected and annotated at sentence level with semantic orientation (positive or negative). The efforts of manually building and annotating the lexicon are reported. Moreover, we build a classifier that extracts idioms and proverbs, phrases from text using n-gram and similarity measure methods. Finally, several experiments were carried out on various data, including Arabic tweets and Arabic microblogs (hotel reservation, product reviews, and TV program comments) from publicly available Arabic online reviews websites (social media, blogs, forums, e-commerce web sites) to evaluate the coverage and accuracy of AIPSeLEX.

Impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on Italy's country reputation and stock market performance: a sentiment analysis approach

During the recent Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, the microblogging service Twitter has been widely used to share opinions and reactions to events. Italy was one of the first European countries to be severely affected by the outbreak and to establish lockdown and stay-at-home orders, potentially leading to country reputation damage. We resort to sentiment analysis to investigate changes in opinions about Italy reported on Twitter before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Using different lexicons-based methods, we find a breakpoint corresponding to the date of the first established case of COVID-19 in Italy that causes a relevant change in sentiment scores used as proxy of the country reputation. Next, we demonstrate that sentiment scores about Italy are strongly associated with the levels of the FTSE-MIB index, the Italian Stock Exchange main index, as they serve as early detection signals of changes in the values of FTSE-MIB. Finally, we make a content-based classification of tweets into positive and negative and use two machine learning classifiers to validate the assigned polarity of tweets posted before and after the outbreak.

IUST at SemEval-2020 Task 9: Sentiment Analysis for Code-Mixed Social Media Text using Deep Neural Networks and Linear Baselines

Sentiment Analysis is a well-studied field of Natural Language Processing. However, the rapid growth of social media and noisy content within them poses significant challenges in addressing this problem with well-established methods and tools. One of these challenges is code-mixing, which means using different languages to convey thoughts in social media texts. Our group, with the name of IUST(username: TAHA), participated at the SemEval-2020 shared task 9 on Sentiment Analysis for Code-Mixed Social Media Text, and we have attempted to develop a system to predict the sentiment of a given code-mixed tweet. We used different preprocessing techniques and proposed to use different methods that vary from NBSVM to more complicated deep neural network models. Our best performing method obtains an F1 score of 0.751 for the Spanish-English sub-task and 0.706 over the Hindi-English sub-task.

A Hybrid Persian Sentiment Analysis Framework: Integrating Dependency Grammar Based Rules and Deep Neural Networks

Social media hold valuable, vast and unstructured information on public opinion that can be utilized to improve products and services. The automatic analysis of such data, however, requires a deep understanding of natural language. Current sentiment analysis approaches are mainly based on word co-occurrence frequencies, which are inadequate in most practical cases. In this work, we propose a novel hybrid framework for concept-level sentiment analysis in Persian language, that integrates linguistic rules and deep learning to optimize polarity detection. When a pattern is triggered, the framework allows sentiments to flow from words to concepts based on symbolic dependency relations. When no pattern is triggered, the framework switches to its subsymbolic counterpart and leverages deep neural networks (DNN) to perform the classification. The proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art approaches (including support vector machine, and logistic regression) and DNN classifiers (long short-term memory, and Convolutional Neural Networks) with a margin of 10-15% and 3-4% respectively, using benchmark Persian product and hotel reviews corpora.

Improved Sentiment Detection via Label Transfer from Monolingual to Synthetic Code-Switched Text

Multilingual writers and speakers often alternate between two languages in a single discourse, a practice called "code-switching". Existing sentiment detection methods are usually trained on sentiment-labeled monolingual text. Manually labeled code-switched text, especially involving minority languages, is extremely rare. Consequently, the best monolingual methods perform relatively poorly on code-switched text. We present an effective technique for synthesizing labeled code-switched text from labeled monolingual text, which is more readily available. The idea is to replace carefully selected subtrees of constituency parses of sentences in the resource-rich language with suitable token spans selected from automatic translations to the resource-poor language. By augmenting scarce human-labeled code-switched text with plentiful synthetic code-switched text, we achieve significant improvements in sentiment labeling accuracy (1.5%, 5.11%, 7.20%) for three different language pairs (English-Hindi, English-Spanish and English-Bengali). We also get significant gains for hate speech detection: 4% improvement using only synthetic text and 6% if augmented with real text.

Emoji-aware Co-attention Network with EmoGraph2vec Model for Sentiment Anaylsis

In social media platforms, emojis have an extremely high occurrence in computer-mediated communications. Many emojis are used to strengthen the emotional expressions and the emojis that co-occurs in a sentence also have a strong sentiment connection. However, when it comes to emoji representation learning, most studies have only utilized the fixed descriptions provided by the Unicode Consortium, without consideration of actual usage scenario. As for the sentiment analysis task, many researchers ignore the emotional impact of the interaction between text and emojis. It results that the emotional semantics of emojis cannot be fully explored. In this work, we propose a method to learn emoji representations called EmoGraph2vec and design an emoji-aware co-attention network that learns the mutual emotional semantics between text and emojis on short texts of social media. In EmoGraph2vec, we form an emoji co-occurrence network on real social data and enrich the semantic information based on an external knowledge base EmojiNet to obtain emoji node embeddings. Our model designs a co-attention mechanism to incorporate the text and emojis, and integrates a squeeze-and-excitation (SE) block into a convolutional neural network as a classifier. Finally, we use the transfer learning method to increase converge speed and achieve higher accuracy. Experimental results show that the proposed model can outperform several baselines for sentiment analysis on benchmark datasets. Additionally, we conduct a series of ablation and comparison experiments to investigate the effectiveness of our model.
