Modeling Rich Contexts for Sentiment Classification with LSTM

Sentiment analysis on social media data such as tweets and weibo has become a very important and challenging task. Due to the intrinsic properties of such data, tweets are short, noisy, and of divergent topics, and sentiment classification on these data requires to modeling various contexts such as the retweet/reply history of a tweet, and the social context about authors and relationships. While few prior study has approached the issue of modeling contexts in tweet, this paper proposes to use a hierarchical LSTM to model rich contexts in tweet, particularly long-range context. Experimental results show that contexts can help us to perform sentiment classification remarkably better.

A Piece of My Mind: A Sentiment Analysis Approach for Online Dispute Detection

We investigate the novel task of online dispute detection and propose a sentiment analysis solution to the problem: we aim to identify the sequence of sentence-level sentiments expressed during a discussion and to use them as features in a classifier that predicts the DISPUTE/NON-DISPUTE label for the discussion as a whole. We evaluate dispute detection approaches on a newly created corpus of Wikipedia Talk page disputes and find that classifiers that rely on our sentiment tagging features outperform those that do not. The best model achieves a very promising F1 score of 0.78 and an accuracy of 0.80.

Sentiment Analysis for Reinforcement Learning

While reinforcement learning (RL) has been successful in natural language processing (NLP) domains such as dialogue generation and text-based games, it typically faces the problem of sparse rewards that leads to slow or no convergence. Traditional methods that use text descriptions to extract only a state representation ignore the feedback inherently present in them. In text-based games, for example, descriptions like "Good Job! You ate the food}" indicate progress, and descriptions like "You entered a new room" indicate exploration. Positive and negative cues like these can be converted to rewards through sentiment analysis. This technique converts the sparse reward problem into a dense one, which is easier to solve. Furthermore, this can enable reinforcement learning without rewards, in which the agent learns entirely from these intrinsic sentiment rewards. This framework is similar to intrinsic motivation, where the environment does not necessarily provide the rewards, but the agent analyzes and realizes them by itself. We find that providing dense rewards in text-based games using sentiment analysis improves performance under some conditions.

Preparation of Sentiment tagged Parallel Corpus and Testing its effect on Machine Translation

In the current work, we explore the enrichment in the machine translation output when the training parallel corpus is augmented with the introduction of sentiment analysis. The paper discusses the preparation of the same sentiment tagged English-Bengali parallel corpus. The preparation of raw parallel corpus, sentiment analysis of the sentences and the training of a Character Based Neural Machine Translation model using the same has been discussed extensively in this paper. The output of the translation model has been compared with a base-line translation model using automated metrics such as BLEU and TER as well as manually.

The R package sentometrics to compute, aggregate and predict with textual sentiment

We provide a hands-on introduction to optimized textual sentiment indexation using the R package sentometrics. Textual sentiment analysis is increasingly used to unlock the potential information value of textual data. The sentometrics package implements an intuitive framework to efficiently compute sentiment scores of numerous texts, to aggregate the scores into multiple time series, and to use these time series to predict other variables. The workflow of the package is illustrated with a built-in corpus of news articles from two major U.S. journals to forecast the CBOE Volatility Index.

Leveraging Sparse and Dense Feature Combinations for Sentiment Classification

Neural networks are one of the most popular approaches for many natural language processing tasks such as sentiment analysis. They often outperform traditional machine learning models and achieve the state-of-art results on most tasks. However, many existing deep learning models are complex, difficult to train and provide a limited improvement over simpler methods. We propose a simple, robust and powerful model for sentiment classification. This model outperforms many deep learning models and achieves comparable results to other deep learning models with complex architectures on sentiment analysis datasets. We publish the code online.

Aspect Level Sentiment Classification with Attention-over-Attention Neural Networks

Aspect-level sentiment classification aims to identify the sentiment expressed towards some aspects given context sentences. In this paper, we introduce an attention-over-attention (AOA) neural network for aspect level sentiment classification. Our approach models aspects and sentences in a joint way and explicitly captures the interaction between aspects and context sentences. With the AOA module, our model jointly learns the representations for aspects and sentences, and automatically focuses on the important parts in sentences. Our experiments on laptop and restaurant datasets demonstrate our approach outperforms previous LSTM-based architectures.

Semi-Unsupervised Lifelong Learning for Sentiment Classification

Lifelong machine learning is a novel machine learning paradigm which continually learns tasks and accumulates knowledge for reuse. The knowledge extracting and reusing abilities enable lifelong machine learning to understand the knowledge for solving a task and obtain the ability to solve the related problems. In sentiment classification, traditional approaches like Naive Bayes focus on the probability for each word with positive or negative sentiment. However, the lifelong machine learning in this paper will investigate this problem in a different angle and attempt to discover which words determine the sentiment of a review. We will pay all attention to obtain knowledge during learning for future learning rather than just solve a current task.

Topic-Specific Sentiment Analysis Can Help Identify Political Ideology

Ideological leanings of an individual can often be gauged by the sentiment one expresses about different issues. We propose a simple framework that represents a political ideology as a distribution of sentiment polarities towards a set of topics. This representation can then be used to detect ideological leanings of documents (speeches, news articles, etc.) based on the sentiments expressed towards different topics. Experiments performed using a widely used dataset show the promise of our proposed approach that achieves comparable performance to other methods despite being much simpler and more interpretable.

Transfer Learning for Improving Results on Russian Sentiment Datasets

In this study, we test transfer learning approach on Russian sentiment benchmark datasets using additional train sample created with distant supervision technique. We compare several variants of combining additional data with benchmark train samples. The best results were achieved using three-step approach of sequential training on general, thematic and original train samples. For most datasets, the results were improved by more than 3% to the current state-of-the-art methods. The BERT-NLI model treating sentiment classification problem as a natural language inference task reached the human level of sentiment analysis on one of the datasets.
