YouTube, a widely popular online platform, has transformed the dynamics of con-tent consumption and interaction for users worldwide. With its extensive range of content crea-tors and viewers, YouTube serves as a hub for video sharing, entertainment, and information dissemination. However, the exponential growth of users and their active engagement on the platform has raised concerns regarding suspicious commenter behaviors, particularly in the com-ment section. This paper presents a social network analysis-based methodology for detecting suspicious commenter mob-like behaviors among YouTube channels and the similarities therein. The method aims to characterize channels based on the level of such behavior and identify com-mon patterns across them. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, we conducted an analysis of 20 YouTube channels, consisting of 7,782 videos, 294,199 commenters, and 596,982 comments. These channels were specifically selected for propagating false views about the U.S. Military. The analysis revealed significant similarities among the channels, shedding light on the prevalence of suspicious commenter behavior. By understanding these similarities, we contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of suspicious behavior on YouTube channels, which can inform strategies for addressing and mitigating such behavior.

We propose Easy End-to-End Diffusion-based Text to Speech, a simple and efficient end-to-end text-to-speech model based on diffusion. E3 TTS directly takes plain text as input and generates an audio waveform through an iterative refinement process. Unlike many prior work, E3 TTS does not rely on any intermediate representations like spectrogram features or alignment information. Instead, E3 TTS models the temporal structure of the waveform through the diffusion process. Without relying on additional conditioning information, E3 TTS could support flexible latent structure within the given audio. This enables E3 TTS to be easily adapted for zero-shot tasks such as editing without any additional training. Experiments show that E3 TTS can generate high-fidelity audio, approaching the performance of a state-of-the-art neural TTS system. Audio samples are available at https://e3tts.github.io.
The $\textit{data market design}$ problem is a problem in economic theory to find a set of signaling schemes (statistical experiments) to maximize expected revenue to the information seller, where each experiment reveals some of the information known to a seller and has a corresponding price [Bergemann et al., 2018]. Each buyer has their own decision to make in a world environment, and their subjective expected value for the information associated with a particular experiment comes from the improvement in this decision and depends on their prior and value for different outcomes. In a setting with multiple buyers, a buyer's expected value for an experiment may also depend on the information sold to others [Bonatti et al., 2022]. We introduce the application of deep learning for the design of revenue-optimal data markets, looking to expand the frontiers of what can be understood and achieved. Relative to earlier work on deep learning for auction design [D\"utting et al., 2023], we must learn signaling schemes rather than allocation rules and handle $\textit{obedience constraints}$ $-$ these arising from modeling the downstream actions of buyers $-$ in addition to incentive constraints on bids. Our experiments demonstrate that this new deep learning framework can almost precisely replicate all known solutions from theory, expand to more complex settings, and be used to establish the optimality of new designs for data markets and make conjectures in regard to the structure of optimal designs.
Many computational linguistic methods have been proposed to study the information content of languages. We consider two interesting research questions: 1) how is information distributed over long documents, and 2) how does content reduction, such as token selection and text summarization, affect the information density in long documents. We present four criteria for information density estimation for long documents, including surprisal, entropy, uniform information density, and lexical density. Among those criteria, the first three adopt the measures from information theory. We propose an attention-based word selection method for clinical notes and study machine summarization for multiple-domain documents. Our findings reveal the systematic difference in information density of long text in various domains. Empirical results on automated medical coding from long clinical notes show the effectiveness of the attention-based word selection method.
Mis- and disinformation online have become a major societal problem as major sources of online harms of different kinds. One common form of mis- and disinformation is out-of-context (OOC) information, where different pieces of information are falsely associated, e.g., a real image combined with a false textual caption or a misleading textual description. Although some past studies have attempted to defend against OOC mis- and disinformation through external evidence, they tend to disregard the role of different pieces of evidence with different stances. Motivated by the intuition that the stance of evidence represents a bias towards different detection results, we propose a stance extraction network (SEN) that can extract the stances of different pieces of multi-modal evidence in a unified framework. Moreover, we introduce a support-refutation score calculated based on the co-occurrence relations of named entities into the textual SEN. Extensive experiments on a public large-scale dataset demonstrated that our proposed method outperformed the state-of-the-art baselines, with the best model achieving a performance gain of 3.2% in accuracy.
Estimating the channel state is known to be an important problem in wireless networks. To this end, it matters to exploit all the available information to improve channel estimation accuracy as much as possible. It turns out that the problem of exploiting the information associated with the receive power feedback (e.g., the received signal strength indicator -RSSI-) has not been identified and solved; in this setup, the transmitter is assumed to receive feedback from all the receivers in presence. As shown in this paper, to solve this problem, classical estimation tools can be used. Using the corresponding MMSE is shown to be always beneficial, whereas the relevance of using the MAP estimator would depend on the operating SNR.
During the development of large language models (LLMs), the scale and quality of the pre-training data play a crucial role in shaping LLMs' capabilities. To accelerate the research of LLMs, several large-scale datasets, such as C4 [1], Pile [2], RefinedWeb [3] and WanJuan [4], have been released to the public. However, most of the released corpus focus mainly on English, and there is still lack of complete tool-chain for extracting clean texts from web data. Furthermore, fine-grained information of the corpus, e.g. the quality of each text, is missing. To address these challenges, we propose in this paper a new complete tool-chain EvalWeb to extract Chinese clean texts from noisy web data. First, similar to previous work, manually crafted rules are employed to discard explicit noisy texts from the raw crawled web contents. Second, a well-designed evaluation model is leveraged to assess the remaining relatively clean data, and each text is assigned a specific quality score. Finally, we can easily utilize an appropriate threshold to select the high-quality pre-training data for Chinese. Using our proposed approach, we release the largest and latest large-scale high-quality Chinese web text ChineseWebText, which consists of 1.42 TB and each text is associated with a quality score, facilitating the LLM researchers to choose the data according to the desired quality thresholds. We also release a much cleaner subset of 600 GB Chinese data with the quality exceeding 90%.
Recently, the increasing demand for superior medical services has highlighted the discrepancies in the medical infrastructure. With big data, especially texts, forming the foundation of medical services, there is an exigent need for effective natural language processing (NLP) solutions tailored to the healthcare domain. Conventional approaches leveraging pre-trained models present promising results in this domain and current large language models (LLMs) offer advanced foundation for medical text processing. However, most medical LLMs are trained only with supervised fine-tuning (SFT), even though it efficiently empowers LLMs to understand and respond to medical instructions but is ineffective in learning domain knowledge and aligning with human preference. Another engineering barrier that prevents current medical LLM from better text processing ability is their restricted context length (e.g., 2,048 tokens), making it hard for the LLMs to process long context, which is frequently required in the medical domain. In this work, we propose ChiMed-GPT, a new benchmark LLM designed explicitly for Chinese medical domain, with enlarged context length to 4,096 tokens and undergoes a comprehensive training regime with pre-training, SFT, and RLHF. Evaluations on real-world tasks including information extraction, question answering, and dialogue generation demonstrate ChiMed-GPT's superior performance over general domain LLMs. Furthermore, we analyze possible biases through prompting ChiMed-GPT to perform attitude scales regarding discrimination of patients, so as to contribute to further responsible development of LLMs in the medical domain. The code and model are released at https://github.com/synlp/ChiMed-GPT.
News recommendation systems (RS) play a pivotal role in the current digital age, shaping how individuals access and engage with information. The fusion of natural language processing (NLP) and RS, spurred by the rise of large language models such as the GPT and T5 series, blurs the boundaries between these domains, making a tendency to treat RS as a language task. ChatGPT, renowned for its user-friendly interface and increasing popularity, has become a prominent choice for a wide range of NLP tasks. While previous studies have explored ChatGPT on recommendation tasks, this study breaks new ground by investigating its fine-tuning capability, particularly within the news domain. In this study, we design two distinct prompts: one designed to treat news RS as the ranking task and another tailored for the rating task. We evaluate ChatGPT's performance in news recommendation by eliciting direct responses through the formulation of these two tasks. More importantly, we unravel the pivotal role of fine-tuning data quality in enhancing ChatGPT's personalized recommendation capabilities, and illustrates its potential in addressing the longstanding challenge of the "cold item" problem in RS. Our experiments, conducted using the Microsoft News dataset (MIND), reveal significant improvements achieved by ChatGPT after fine-tuning, especially in scenarios where a user's topic interests remain consistent, treating news RS as a ranking task. This study illuminates the transformative potential of fine-tuning ChatGPT as a means to advance news RS, offering more effective news consumption experiences.
