There is no denying that the use of Information Technology (IT) is undergoing exponential growth in today's world. This digital transformation has also given rise to a multitude of security challenges, notably in the realm of cybercrime. In response to these growing threats, public and private sectors have prioritized the strengthening of IT security measures. In light of the growing security concern, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gained prominence within the cybersecurity landscape. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent advancements in AI-driven threat response systems. To the best of our knowledge, the most recent survey covering the AI reaction domain was conducted in 2017. Since then, considerable literature has been published and therefore it is worth reviewing it. By means of several shared features, each of the studies is compared on a common ground. Through an analysis of the research papers conducted on a standardized basis, this survey aims to unravel the complexities and opportunities of integrating AI into cyber defense. The conclusions drawn from this collective analysis provide a comprehensive snapshot of the evolving landscape at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. This landscape underscores the growing significance of not only anticipating and detecting threats but also responding to them effectively. Additionally, from these reviews, various research challenges for the future are presented. These challenges serve as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners in the field of AI-integrated reactive strategies.
Offline meta-reinforcement learning (meta-RL) methods, which adapt to unseen target tasks with prior experience, are essential in robot control tasks. Current methods typically utilize task contexts and skills as prior experience, where task contexts are related to the information within each task and skills represent a set of temporally extended actions for solving subtasks. However, these methods still suffer from limited performance when adapting to unseen target tasks, mainly because the learned prior experience lacks generalization, i.e., they are unable to extract effective prior experience from meta-training tasks by exploration and learning of continuous latent spaces. We propose a framework called decoupled meta-reinforcement learning (DCMRL), which (1) contrastively restricts the learning of task contexts through pulling in similar task contexts within the same task and pushing away different task contexts of different tasks, and (2) utilizes a Gaussian quantization variational autoencoder (GQ-VAE) for clustering the Gaussian distributions of the task contexts and skills respectively, and decoupling the exploration and learning processes of their spaces. These cluster centers which serve as representative and discrete distributions of task context and skill are stored in task context codebook and skill codebook, respectively. DCMRL can acquire generalizable prior experience and achieve effective adaptation to unseen target tasks during the meta-testing phase. Experiments in the navigation and robot manipulation continuous control tasks show that DCMRL is more effective than previous meta-RL methods with more generalizable prior experience.
Hyperspectral salient object detection (HSOD) aims to detect spectrally salient objects in hyperspectral images (HSIs). However, existing methods inadequately utilize spectral information by either converting HSIs into false-color images or converging neural networks with clustering. We propose a novel approach that fully leverages the spectral characteristics by extracting two distinct frequency components from the spectrum: low-frequency Spectral Saliency and high-frequency Spectral Edge. The Spectral Saliency approximates the region of salient objects, while the Spectral Edge captures edge information of salient objects. These two complementary components, crucial for HSOD, are derived by computing from the inter-layer spectral angular distance of the Gaussian pyramid and the intra-neighborhood spectral angular gradients, respectively. To effectively utilize this dual-frequency information, we introduce a novel lightweight Spectrum-driven Mixed-frequency Network (SMN). SMN incorporates two parameter-free plug-and-play operators, namely Spectral Saliency Generator and Spectral Edge Operator, to extract the Spectral Saliency and Spectral Edge components from the input HSI independently. Subsequently, the Mixed-frequency Attention module, comprised of two frequency-dependent heads, intelligently combines the embedded features of edge and saliency information, resulting in a mixed-frequency feature representation. Furthermore, a saliency-edge-aware decoder progressively scales up the mixed-frequency feature while preserving rich detail and saliency information for accurate salient object prediction. Extensive experiments conducted on the HS-SOD benchmark and our custom dataset HSOD-BIT demonstrate that our SMN outperforms state-of-the-art methods regarding HSOD performance. The use of modern software-defined radio (SDR) devices enables the implementation of efficient communication systems in numerous scenarios. Such technology comes especially handy in the context of search and rescue (SAR) systems, enabling the incorporation of additional communication data transmission into the otherwise sub-optimally used SAR bands at 121.5 and 243~MHz. In this work, we propose a novel low-complexity, energy-efficient modulation scheme that allows transmission of additional data within chirped homing signals, while still meeting the standards of international SAR systems such as COSPAS-SARSAT. The proposed method modulates information onto small deviations of the chirp slope with respect to the required unmodulated chirp, which can be easily detected at the receiver side using digital signal processing.
Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have received increasing attention due to their ability to learn from graph-structured data. To open the black-box of these deep learning models, post-hoc instance-level explanation methods have been proposed to understand GNN predictions. These methods seek to discover substructures that explain the prediction behavior of a trained GNN. In this paper, we show analytically that for a large class of explanation tasks, conventional approaches, which are based on the principle of graph information bottleneck (GIB), admit trivial solutions that do not align with the notion of explainability. Instead, we argue that a modified GIB principle may be used to avoid the aforementioned trivial solutions. We further introduce a novel factorized explanation model with theoretical performance guarantees. The modified GIB is used to analyze the structural properties of the proposed factorized explainer. We conduct extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets to validate the effectiveness of our proposed factorized explainer over existing approaches.
Few-shot image classification aims to classify images from unseen novel classes with few samples. Recent works demonstrate that deep local descriptors exhibit enhanced representational capabilities compared to image-level features. However, most existing methods solely rely on either employing all local descriptors or directly utilizing partial descriptors, potentially resulting in the loss of crucial information. Moreover, these methods primarily emphasize the selection of query descriptors while overlooking support descriptors. In this paper, we propose a novel Task-Aware Adaptive Local Descriptors Selection Network (TALDS-Net), which exhibits the capacity for adaptive selection of task-aware support descriptors and query descriptors. Specifically, we compare the similarity of each local support descriptor with other local support descriptors to obtain the optimal support descriptor subset and then compare the query descriptors with the optimal support subset to obtain discriminative query descriptors. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our TALDS-Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods on both general and fine-grained datasets.
Zero-shot age estimation aims to learn feature information about age from input images and make inferences about a given person's image or video frame without specific sample data. The development of zero-shot age estimation can improve the efficiency and accuracy of various applications (e.g., age verification and secure access control, etc.), while also promoting research on multi-modal and zero-shot learning in the social media field. For example, zero-sample age estimation can be used to create social networks focused on specific age groups. However, existing methods mainly focus on supervised, labeled age estimation learning, and the prediction effect of zero-shot learning is very poor. To tackle the above issues, we propose a novel CLIP-driven Zero-shot Learning for Correcting Inverse Age Estimation (CZL-CIAE). Specifically, we first introduce the CLIP model to extract image features and text semantic information respectively, and map them into a highly semantically aligned high-dimensional feature space. Next, we designed a new Transformer architecture (i.e., FourierFormer) to achieve channel evolution and spatial interaction of images, and to fuse image and text semantic information. Finally, we introduce reversible age estimation, which uses end-to-end error feedback to reduce the error rate of age predictions. Through extensive experiments on multiple data sets, CZL-CIAE has achieved better age prediction results.
Multi-modal biomedical time series (MBTS) data offers a holistic view of the physiological state, holding significant importance in various bio-medical applications. Owing to inherent noise and distribution gaps across different modalities, MBTS can be complex to model. Various deep learning models have been developed to learn representations of MBTS but still fall short in robustness due to the ignorance of modal-to-modal variations. This paper presents a multi-scale and multi-modal biomedical time series representation learning (MBSL) network with contrastive learning to migrate these variations. Firstly, MBTS is grouped based on inter-modal distances, then each group with minimum intra-modal variations can be effectively modeled by individual encoders. Besides, to enhance the multi-scale feature extraction (encoder), various patch lengths and mask ratios are designed to generate tokens with semantic information at different scales and diverse contextual perspectives respectively. Finally, cross-modal contrastive learning is proposed to maximize consistency among inter-modal groups, maintaining useful information and eliminating noises. Experiments against four bio-medical applications show that MBSL outperforms state-of-the-art models by 33.9% mean average errors (MAE) in respiration rate, by 13.8% MAE in exercise heart rate, by 1.41% accuracy in human activity recognition, and by 1.14% F1-score in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.
The proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs) has spurred extensive research into LLM-related Prompt investigations, such as Instruction Learning (IL), In-context Learning (ICL), and Chain-of-Thought (CoT). These approaches aim to improve LLMs' responses by enabling them to provide concise statements or examples for deeper contemplation when addressing questions. However, independent thinking by LLMs can introduce variability in their thought processes, leading to potential inaccuracies. In response, our study seeks to bridge the gap between LLM and human-like thinking processes, recognizing that text comprehension begins with understanding individual words. To tackle this challenge, we have expanded the CoT method to cater to a specific domain. Our approach, known as "Think from Words" (TFW), initiates the comprehension process at the word level and then extends it to encompass the entire text. We also propose "TFW with Extra word-level information" (TFW Extra), augmenting comprehension with additional word-level data. To assess our methods, we employ text classification on six Japanese datasets comprising text-level and word-level elements. Our findings not only validate the effectiveness of TFW but also shed light on the impact of various word-level information types on LLMs' text comprehension, offering insights into their potential to cause misinterpretations and errors in the overall comprehension of the final text.
Video Motion Magnification (VMM) aims to break the resolution limit of human visual perception capability and reveal the imperceptible minor motion that contains valuable information in the macroscopic domain. However, challenges arise in this task due to photon noise inevitably introduced by photographic devices and spatial inconsistency in amplification, leading to flickering artifacts in static fields and motion blur and distortion in dynamic fields in the video. Existing methods focus on explicit motion modeling without emphasizing prioritized denoising during the motion magnification process. This paper proposes a novel dynamic filtering strategy to achieve static-dynamic field adaptive denoising. Specifically, based on Eulerian theory, we separate texture and shape to extract motion representation through inter-frame shape differences, expecting to leverage these subdivided features to solve this task finely. Then, we introduce a novel dynamic filter that eliminates noise cues and preserves critical features in the motion magnification and amplification generation phases. Overall, our unified framework, EulerMormer, is a pioneering effort to first equip with Transformer in learning-based VMM. The core of the dynamic filter lies in a global dynamic sparse cross-covariance attention mechanism that explicitly removes noise while preserving vital information, coupled with a multi-scale dual-path gating mechanism that selectively regulates the dependence on different frequency features to reduce spatial attenuation and complement motion boundaries. We demonstrate extensive experiments that EulerMormer achieves more robust video motion magnification from the Eulerian perspective, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art methods.
