Increased delegation of commercial, scientific, governmental, and personal activities to AI agents -- systems capable of pursuing complex goals with limited supervision -- may exacerbate existing societal risks and introduce new risks. Understanding and mitigating these risks involves critically evaluating existing governance structures, revising and adapting these structures where needed, and ensuring accountability of key stakeholders. Information about where, why, how, and by whom certain AI agents are used, which we refer to as visibility, is critical to these objectives. In this paper, we assess three categories of measures to increase visibility into AI agents: agent identifiers, real-time monitoring, and activity logging. For each, we outline potential implementations that vary in intrusiveness and informativeness. We analyze how the measures apply across a spectrum of centralized through decentralized deployment contexts, accounting for various actors in the supply chain including hardware and software service providers. Finally, we discuss the implications of our measures for privacy and concentration of power. Further work into understanding the measures and mitigating their negative impacts can help to build a foundation for the governance of AI agents.
Neural radiance fields (NeRF) have been proposed as an innovative 3D representation method. While attracting lots of attention, NeRF faces critical issues such as information confidentiality and security. Steganography is a technique used to embed information in another object as a means of protecting information security. Currently, there are few related studies on NeRF steganography, facing challenges in low steganography quality, model weight damage, and a limited amount of steganographic information. This paper proposes a novel NeRF steganography method based on trainable noise: Noise-NeRF. Furthermore, we propose the Adaptive Pixel Selection strategy and Pixel Perturbation strategy to improve the steganography quality and efficiency. The extensive experiments on open-source datasets show that Noise-NeRF provides state-of-the-art performances in both steganography quality and rendering quality, as well as effectiveness in super-resolution image steganography.
Information retrieval (IR) methods for KGQA consist of two stages: subgraph extraction and answer reasoning. We argue current subgraph extraction methods underestimate the importance of structural dependencies among evidence facts. We propose Evidence Pattern Retrieval (EPR) to explicitly model the structural dependencies during subgraph extraction. We implement EPR by indexing the atomic adjacency pattern of resource pairs. Given a question, we perform dense retrieval to obtain atomic patterns formed by resource pairs. We then enumerate their combinations to construct candidate evidence patterns. These evidence patterns are scored using a neural model, and the best one is selected to extract a subgraph for downstream answer reasoning. Experimental results demonstrate that the EPR-based approach has significantly improved the F1 scores of IR-KGQA methods by over 10 points on ComplexWebQuestions and achieves competitive performance on WebQuestionsSP.
Exploration in decentralized cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning faces two challenges. One is that the novelty of global states is unavailable, while the novelty of local observations is biased. The other is how agents can explore in a coordinated way. To address these challenges, we propose MACE, a simple yet effective multi-agent coordinated exploration method. By communicating only local novelty, agents can take into account other agents' local novelty to approximate the global novelty. Further, we newly introduce weighted mutual information to measure the influence of one agent's action on other agents' accumulated novelty. We convert it as an intrinsic reward in hindsight to encourage agents to exert more influence on other agents' exploration and boost coordinated exploration. Empirically, we show that MACE achieves superior performance in three multi-agent environments with sparse rewards.
In recent years, microservices have gained widespread adoption in IT operations due to their scalability, maintenance, and flexibility. However, it becomes challenging for site reliability engineers (SREs) to pinpoint the root cause due to the complex relationships in microservices when facing system malfunctions. Previous research employed structured learning methods (e.g., PC-algorithm) to establish causal relationships and derive root causes from causal graphs. Nevertheless, they ignored the temporal order of time series data and failed to leverage the rich information inherent in the temporal relationships. For instance, in cases where there is a sudden spike in CPU utilization, it can lead to an increase in latency for other microservices. However, in this scenario, the anomaly in CPU utilization occurs before the latency increase, rather than simultaneously. As a result, the PC-algorithm fails to capture such characteristics. To address these challenges, we propose RUN, a novel approach for root cause analysis using neural Granger causal discovery with contrastive learning. RUN enhances the backbone encoder by integrating contextual information from time series, and leverages a time series forecasting model to conduct neural Granger causal discovery. In addition, RUN incorporates Pagerank with a personalization vector to efficiently recommend the top-k root causes. Extensive experiments conducted on the synthetic and real-world microservice-based datasets demonstrate that RUN noticeably outperforms the state-of-the-art root cause analysis methods. Moreover, we provide an analysis scenario for the sock-shop case to showcase the practicality and efficacy of RUN in microservice-based applications. Omnidirectional and 360{\deg} images are becoming widespread in industry and in consumer society, causing omnidirectional computer vision to gain attention. Their wide field of view allows the gathering of a great amount of information about the environment from only an image. However, the distortion of these images requires the development of specific algorithms for their treatment and interpretation. Moreover, a high number of images is essential for the correct training of computer vision algorithms based on learning. In this paper, we present a tool for generating datasets of omnidirectional images with semantic and depth information. These images are synthesized from a set of captures that are acquired in a realistic virtual environment for Unreal Engine 4 through an interface plugin. We gather a variety of well-known projection models such as equirectangular and cylindrical panoramas, different fish-eye lenses, catadioptric systems, and empiric models. Furthermore, we include in our tool photorealistic non-central-projection systems as non-central panoramas and non-central catadioptric systems. As far as we know, this is the first reported tool for generating photorealistic non-central images in the literature. Moreover, since the omnidirectional images are made virtually, we provide pixel-wise information about semantics and depth as well as perfect knowledge of the calibration parameters of the cameras. This allows the creation of ground-truth information with pixel precision for training learning algorithms and testing 3D vision approaches. To validate the proposed tool, different computer vision algorithms are tested as line extractions from dioptric and catadioptric central images, 3D Layout recovery and SLAM using equirectangular panoramas, and 3D reconstruction from non-central panoramas.
Activity detection is an important task in the next generation grant-free multiple access. While there are a number of existing algorithms designed for this purpose, they mostly require precise information about the network, such as large-scale fading coefficients, small-scale fading channel statistics, noise variance at the access points, and user activity probability. Acquiring these information would take a significant overhead and their estimated values might not be accurate. This problem is even more severe in cell-free networks as there are many of these parameters to be acquired. Therefore, this paper sets out to investigate the activity detection problem without the above-mentioned information. In order to handle so many unknown parameters, this paper employs the Bayesian approach, where the unknown variables are endowed with prior distributions which effectively act as regularizations. Together with the likelihood function, a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator and a variational inference algorithm are derived. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed methods, even without the knowledge of these system parameters, perform better than existing state-of-the-art methods, such as covariance-based and approximate message passing methods.
3D human pose estimation captures the human joint points in three-dimensional space while keeping the depth information and physical structure. That is essential for applications that require precise pose information, such as human-computer interaction, scene understanding, and rehabilitation training. Due to the challenges in data collection, mainstream datasets of 3D human pose estimation are primarily composed of multi-view video data collected in laboratory environments, which contains rich spatial-temporal correlation information besides the image frame content. Given the remarkable self-attention mechanism of transformers, capable of capturing the spatial-temporal correlation from multi-view video datasets, we propose a multi-stage framework for 3D sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) human pose detection. Firstly, the spatial module represents the human pose feature by intra-image content, while the frame-image relation module extracts temporal relationships and 3D spatial positional relationship features between the multi-perspective images. Secondly, the self-attention mechanism is adopted to eliminate the interference from non-human body parts and reduce computing resources. Our method is evaluated on Human3.6M, a popular 3D human pose detection dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on this dataset.
YouTube faces a global crisis with the dissemination of false information and hate speech. To counter these issues, YouTube has implemented strict rules against uploading content that includes false information or promotes hate speech. While numerous studies have been conducted to reduce offensive English-language content, there's a significant lack of research on Sinhala content. This study aims to address the aforementioned gap by proposing a solution to minimize the spread of violence and misinformation in Sinhala YouTube videos. The approach involves developing a rating system that assesses whether a video contains false information by comparing the title and description with the audio content and evaluating whether the video includes hate speech. The methodology encompasses several steps, including audio extraction using the Pytube library, audio transcription via the fine-tuned Whisper model, hate speech detection employing the distilroberta-base model and a text classification LSTM model, and text summarization through the fine-tuned BART-Large- XSUM model. Notably, the Whisper model achieved a 48.99\% word error rate, while the distilroberta-base model demonstrated an F1 score of 0.856 and a recall value of 0.861 in comparison to the LSTM model, which exhibited signs of overfitting.
The conservation of hydrological resources involves continuously monitoring their contamination. A multi-agent system composed of autonomous surface vehicles is proposed in this paper to efficiently monitor the water quality. To achieve a safe control of the fleet, the fleet policy should be able to act based on measurements and to the the fleet state. It is proposed to use Local Gaussian Processes and Deep Reinforcement Learning to jointly obtain effective monitoring policies. Local Gaussian processes, unlike classical global Gaussian processes, can accurately model the information in a dissimilar spatial correlation which captures more accurately the water quality information. A Deep convolutional policy is proposed, that bases the decisions on the observation on the mean and variance of this model, by means of an information gain reward. Using a Double Deep Q-Learning algorithm, agents are trained to minimize the estimation error in a safe manner thanks to a Consensus-based heuristic. Simulation results indicate an improvement of up to 24% in terms of the mean absolute error with the proposed models. Also, training results with 1-3 agents indicate that our proposed approach returns 20% and 24% smaller average estimation errors for, respectively, monitoring water quality variables and monitoring algae blooms, as compared to state-of-the-art approaches
