To better exploit search logs and model users' behavior patterns, numerous click models are proposed to extract users' implicit interaction feedback. Most traditional click models are based on the probabilistic graphical model (PGM) framework, which requires manually designed dependencies and may oversimplify user behaviors. Recently, methods based on neural networks are proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of user behaviors by enhancing the expressive ability and allowing flexible dependencies. However, they still suffer from the data sparsity and cold-start problems. In this paper, we propose a novel graph-enhanced click model (GraphCM) for web search. Firstly, we regard each query or document as a vertex, and propose novel homogeneous graph construction methods for queries and documents respectively, to fully exploit both intra-session and inter-session information for the sparsity and cold-start problems. Secondly, following the examination hypothesis, we separately model the attractiveness estimator and examination predictor to output the attractiveness scores and examination probabilities, where graph neural networks and neighbor interaction techniques are applied to extract the auxiliary information encoded in the pre-constructed homogeneous graphs. Finally, we apply combination functions to integrate examination probabilities and attractiveness scores into click predictions. Extensive experiments conducted on three real-world session datasets show that GraphCM not only outperforms the state-of-art models, but also achieves superior performance in addressing the data sparsity and cold-start problems.
The objective of multimodal information fusion is to mathematically analyze information carried in different sources and create a new representation which will be more effectively utilized in pattern recognition and other multimedia information processing tasks. In this paper, we introduce a new method for multimodal information fusion and representation based on the Labeled Multiple Canonical Correlation Analysis (LMCCA). By incorporating class label information of the training samples,the proposed LMCCA ensures that the fused features carry discriminative characteristics of the multimodal information representations, and are capable of providing superior recognition performance. We implement a prototype of LMCCA to demonstrate its effectiveness on handwritten digit recognition,face recognition and object recognition utilizing multiple features,bimodal human emotion recognition involving information from both audio and visual domains. The generic nature of LMCCA allows it to take as input features extracted by any means,including those by deep learning (DL) methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method enhanced the performance of both statistical machine learning (SML) methods, and methods based on DL.
The rapid development of network science and technologies depends on shareable datasets. Currently, there is no standard practice for reporting and sharing network datasets. Some network dataset providers only share links, while others provide some contexts or basic statistics. As a result, critical information may be unintentionally dropped, and network dataset consumers may misunderstand or overlook critical aspects. Inappropriately using a network dataset can lead to severe consequences (e.g., discrimination) especially when machine learning models on networks are deployed in high-stake domains. Challenges arise as networks are often used across different domains (e.g., network science, physics, etc) and have complex structures. To facilitate the communication between network dataset providers and consumers, we propose network report. A network report is a structured description that summarizes and contextualizes a network dataset. Network report extends the idea of dataset reports (e.g., Datasheets for Datasets) from prior work with network-specific descriptions of the non-i.i.d. nature, demographic information, network characteristics, etc. We hope network reports encourage transparency and accountability in network research and development across different fields.
Object detection using single point supervision has received increasing attention over the years. In this paper, we attribute such a large performance gap to the failure of generating high-quality proposal bags which are crucial for multiple instance learning (MIL). To address this problem, we introduce a lightweight alternative to the off-the-shelf proposal (OTSP) method and thereby create the Point-to-Box Network (P2BNet), which can construct an inter-objects balanced proposal bag by generating proposals in an anchor-like way. By fully investigating the accurate position information, P2BNet further constructs an instance-level bag, avoiding the mixture of multiple objects. Finally, a coarse-to-fine policy in a cascade fashion is utilized to improve the IoU between proposals and ground-truth (GT). Benefiting from these strategies, P2BNet is able to produce high-quality instance-level bags for object detection. P2BNet improves the mean average precision (AP) by more than 50% relative to the previous best PSOD method on the MS COCO dataset. It also demonstrates the great potential to bridge the performance gap between point supervised and bounding-box supervised detectors. The code will be released at github.com/ucas-vg/P2BNet.
Open information extraction (OIE) methods extract plenty of OIE triples <noun phrase, relation phrase, noun phrase> from unstructured text, which compose large open knowledge bases (OKBs). Noun phrases and relation phrases in such OKBs are not canonicalized, which leads to scattered and redundant facts. It is found that two views of knowledge (i.e., a fact view based on the fact triple and a context view based on the fact triple's source context) provide complementary information that is vital to the task of OKB canonicalization, which clusters synonymous noun phrases and relation phrases into the same group and assigns them unique identifiers. However, these two views of knowledge have so far been leveraged in isolation by existing works. In this paper, we propose CMVC, a novel unsupervised framework that leverages these two views of knowledge jointly for canonicalizing OKBs without the need of manually annotated labels. To achieve this goal, we propose a multi-view CH K-Means clustering algorithm to mutually reinforce the clustering of view-specific embeddings learned from each view by considering their different clustering qualities. In order to further enhance the canonicalization performance, we propose a training data optimization strategy in terms of data quantity and data quality respectively in each particular view to refine the learned view-specific embeddings in an iterative manner. Additionally, we propose a Log-Jump algorithm to predict the optimal number of clusters in a data-driven way without requiring any labels. We demonstrate the superiority of our framework through extensive experiments on multiple real-world OKB data sets against state-of-the-art methods.
Automated medical coding is a process of codifying clinical notes to appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes automatically from the standard taxonomies such as ICD (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedure Terminology). The manual coding process involves the identification of entities from the clinical notes followed by querying a commercial or non-commercial medical codes Information Retrieval (IR) system that follows the Centre for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines. We propose to automate this manual process by automatically constructing a query for the IR system using the entities auto-extracted from the clinical notes. We propose \textbf{GrabQC}, a \textbf{Gra}ph \textbf{b}ased \textbf{Q}uery \textbf{C}ontextualization method that automatically extracts queries from the clinical text, contextualizes the queries using a Graph Neural Network (GNN) model and obtains the ICD Codes using an external IR system. We also propose a method for labelling the dataset for training the model. We perform experiments on two datasets of clinical text in three different setups to assert the effectiveness of our approach. The experimental results show that our proposed method is better than the compared baselines in all three settings.
Image signals typically are defined on a rectangular two-dimensional grid. However, there exist scenarios where this is not fulfilled and where the image information only is available for a non-regular subset of pixel position. For processing, transmitting or displaying such an image signal, a re-sampling to a regular grid is required. Recently, Frequency Selective Reconstruction (FSR) has been proposed as a very effective sparsity-based algorithm for solving this under-determined problem. For this, FSR iteratively generates a model of the signal in the Fourier-domain. In this context, a fixed frequency prior inspired by the optical transfer function is used for favoring low-frequency content. However, this fixed prior is often too strict and may lead to a reduced reconstruction quality. To resolve this weakness, this paper proposes an adaptive frequency prior which takes the local density of the available samples into account. The proposed adaptive prior allows for a very high reconstruction quality, yielding gains of up to 0.6 dB PSNR over the fixed prior, independently of the density of the available samples. Compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms, visually noticeable gains of several dB are possible.
Transformers are arguably the main workhorse in recent Natural Language Processing research. By definition a Transformer is invariant with respect to reorderings of the input. However, language is inherently sequential and word order is essential to the semantics and syntax of an utterance. In this paper, we provide an overview of common methods to incorporate position information into Transformer models. The objectives of this survey are to i) showcase that position information in Transformer is a vibrant and extensive research area; ii) enable the reader to compare existing methods by providing a unified notation and meaningful clustering; iii) indicate what characteristics of an application should be taken into account when selecting a position encoding; iv) provide stimuli for future research.
Character-based representations have important advantages over subword-based ones for morphologically rich languages. They come with increased robustness to noisy input and do not need a separate tokenization step. However, they also have a crucial disadvantage: they notably increase the length of text sequences. The GBST method from Charformer groups (aka downsamples) characters to solve this, but allows information to leak when applied to a Transformer decoder. We solve this information leak issue, thereby enabling character grouping in the decoder. We show that Charformer downsampling has no apparent benefits in NMT over previous downsampling methods in terms of translation quality, however it can be trained roughly 30% faster. Promising performance on English--Turkish translation indicate the potential of character-level models for morphologically-rich languages.
Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is ubiquitous in robotic research. It provides posture information for robots to realize balance and navigation. However, humans and animals can perceive the movement of their bodies in the environment without precise orientation or position values. This interaction inherently involves a fast feedback loop between perception and action. This work proposed an end-to-end approach that uses high dimension visual observation and action commands to train a visual self-model for legged locomotion. The visual self-model learns the spatial relationship between the robot body movement and the ground texture changes from image sequences. We demonstrate that the robot can leverage the visual self-model to achieve various locomotion tasks in the real-world environment that the robot does not see during training. With our proposed method, robots can do locomotion without IMU or in an environment with no GPS or weak geomagnetic fields like the indoor and urban canyons in the city.
