In cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), where agents only have access to partial observations, efficiently leveraging local information is critical. During long-time observations, agents can build \textit{awareness} for teammates to alleviate the problem of partial observability. However, previous MARL methods usually neglect this kind of utilization of local information. To address this problem, we propose a novel framework, multi-agent \textit{Local INformation Decomposition for Awareness of teammates} (LINDA), with which agents learn to decompose local information and build awareness for each teammate. We model the awareness as stochastic random variables and perform representation learning to ensure the informativeness of awareness representations by maximizing the mutual information between awareness and the actual trajectory of the corresponding agent. LINDA is agnostic to specific algorithms and can be flexibly integrated to different MARL methods. Sufficient experiments show that the proposed framework learns informative awareness from local partial observations for better collaboration and significantly improves the learning performance, especially on challenging tasks.
Reviews contain rich information about product characteristics and user interests and thus are commonly used to boost recommender system performance. Specifically, previous work show that jointly learning to perform review generation improves rating prediction performance. Meanwhile, these model-produced reviews serve as recommendation explanations, providing the user with insights on predicted ratings. However, while existing models could generate fluent, human-like reviews, it is unclear to what degree the reviews fully uncover the rationale behind the jointly predicted rating. In this work, we perform a series of evaluations that probes state-of-the-art models and their review generation component. We show that the generated explanations are brittle and need further evaluation before being taken as literal rationales for the estimated ratings.
In narrow spaces, motion planning based on the traditional hierarchical autonomous system could cause collisions due to mapping, localization, and control noises. Additionally, it is disabled when mapless. To tackle these problems, we leverage deep reinforcement learning which is verified to be effective in self-decision-making, to self-explore in narrow spaces without a map while avoiding collisions. Specifically, based on our Ackermann-steering rectangular-shaped ZebraT robot and its Gazebo simulator, we propose the rectangular safety region to represent states and detect collisions for rectangular-shaped robots, and a carefully crafted reward function for reinforcement learning that does not require the destination information. Then we benchmark five reinforcement learning algorithms including DDPG, DQN, SAC, PPO, and PPO-discrete, in a simulated narrow track. After training, the well-performed DDPG and DQN models can be transferred to three brand new simulated tracks, and furthermore to three real-world tracks.
Successful flood recovery and evacuation require access to reliable flood depth information. Most existing flood mapping tools do not provide real-time flood maps of inundated streets in and around residential areas. In this paper, a deep convolutional network is used to determine flood depth with high spatial resolution by analyzing crowdsourced images of submerged traffic signs. Testing the model on photos from a recent flood in the U.S. and Canada yields a mean absolute error of 6.978 in., which is on par with previous studies, thus demonstrating the applicability of this approach to low-cost, accurate, and real-time flood risk mapping.
As an important biomarker for human identification, human gait can be collected at a distance by passive sensors without subject cooperation, which plays an essential role in crime prevention, security detection and other human identification applications. At present, most research works are based on cameras and computer vision techniques to perform gait recognition. However, vision-based methods are not reliable when confronting poor illuminations, leading to degrading performances. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal gait recognition method, namely GaitFi, which leverages WiFi signals and videos for human identification. In GaitFi, Channel State Information (CSI) that reflects the multi-path propagation of WiFi is collected to capture human gaits, while videos are captured by cameras. To learn robust gait information, we propose a Lightweight Residual Convolution Network (LRCN) as the backbone network, and further propose the two-stream GaitFi by integrating WiFi and vision features for the gait retrieval task. The GaitFi is trained by the triplet loss and classification loss on different levels of features. Extensive experiments are conducted in the real world, which demonstrates that the GaitFi outperforms state-of-the-art gait recognition methods based on single WiFi or camera, achieving 94.2% for human identification tasks of 12 subjects.
This paper studies user attributes in light of current concerns in the recommender system community: diversity, coverage, calibration, and data minimization. In experiments with a conventional context-aware recommender system that leverages side information, we show that user attributes do not always improve recommendation. Then, we demonstrate that user attributes can negatively impact diversity and coverage. Finally, we investigate the amount of information about users that ``survives'' from the training data into the recommendation lists produced by the recommender. This information is a weak signal that could in the future be exploited for calibration or studied further as a privacy leak.
The lack of large labeled medical imaging datasets, along with significant inter-individual variability compared to clinically established disease classes, poses significant challenges in exploiting medical imaging information in a precision medicine paradigm, where in principle dense patient-specific data can be employed to formulate individual predictions and/or stratify patients into finer-grained groups which may follow more homogeneous trajectories and therefore empower clinical trials. In order to efficiently explore the effective degrees of freedom underlying variability in medical images in an unsupervised manner, in this work we propose an unsupervised autoencoder framework which is augmented with a contrastive loss to encourage high separability in the latent space. The model is validated on (medical) benchmark datasets. As cluster labels are assigned to each example according to cluster assignments, we compare performance with a supervised transfer learning baseline. Our method achieves similar performance to the supervised architecture, indicating that separation in the latent space reproduces expert medical observer-assigned labels. The proposed method could be beneficial for patient stratification, exploring new subdivisions of larger classes or pathological continua or, due to its sampling abilities in a variation setting, data augmentation in medical image processing.
The technical report presents our emotion recognition pipeline for high-dimensional emotion task (A-VB High) in The ACII Affective Vocal Bursts (A-VB) 2022 Workshop \& Competition. Our proposed method contains three stages. Firstly, we extract the latent features from the raw audio signal and its Mel-spectrogram by self-supervised learning methods. Then, the features from the raw signal are fed to the self-relation attention and temporal awareness (SA-TA) module for learning the valuable information between these latent features. Finally, we concatenate all the features and utilize a fully-connected layer to predict each emotion's score. By empirical experiments, our proposed method achieves a mean concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.7295 on the test set, compared to 0.5686 on the baseline model. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) regime reaps the benefits of spatial diversity and multiplexing gains, subject to precise channel state information (CSI) acquisition. In the current communication architecture, the downlink CSI is estimated by the user equipment (UE) via dedicated pilots and then fed back to the gNodeB (gNB). The feedback information is compressed with the goal of reducing over-the-air overhead. This compression increases the inaccuracy of acquired CSI, thus degrading the overall spectral efficiency. This paper proposes a computationally inexpensive machine learning (ML)-based CSI feedback algorithm, which exploits twin channel predictors. The proposed approach can work for both time-division duplex (TDD) and frequency-division duplex (FDD) systems, and it allows to reduce feedback overhead and improves the acquired CSI accuracy. To observe real benefits, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach using the empirical data recorded at the Nokia campus in Stuttgart, Germany. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of reducing overhead, minimizing quantization errors, increasing spectral efficiency, cosine similarity, and precoding gain compared to the traditional CSI feedback mechanism.
Each programming language comes with official documentation to guide developers with APIs, methods and classes. However, in some cases, official documentation is not an efficient way to get the needed information. As a result, developers may consult other sources (e.g., Stack Overflow, GitHub) to learn more about an API, its implementation, usage, and other information that official documentation may not provide. In this research, we propose an automatic approach to generate summaries for APIs and methods by leveraging unofficial documentation using NLP techniques. Our findings demonstrate that the generated summaries are competitive, and can be used as a complementary source for guiding developers in software development and maintenance tasks.
