Federated Edge Learning (FEEL) is a distributed machine learning technique where each device contributes to training a global inference model by independently performing local computations with their data. More recently, FEEL has been merged with over-the-air computation (OAC), where the global model is calculated over the air by leveraging the superposition of analog signals. However, when implementing FEEL with OAC, there is the challenge on how to precode the analog signals to overcome any time misalignment at the receiver. In this work, we propose a novel synchronization-free method to recover the parameters of the global model over the air without requiring any prior information about the time misalignments. For that, we construct a convex optimization based on the norm minimization problem to directly recover the global model by solving a convex semi-definite program. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of accuracy and convergence via numerical experiments. We show that our proposed algorithm is close to the ideal synchronized scenario by $10\%$, and performs $4\times$ better than the simple case where no recovering method is used.
With the rapid development of pre-training techniques, a number of language models have been pre-trained on large-scale code corpora and perform well in code generation. In this paper, we investigate how to equip pre-trained language models with the ability of code generation for private libraries. In practice, it is common for programmers to write code using private libraries. However, this is a challenge for language models since they have never seen private APIs during training. Motivated by the fact that private libraries usually come with elaborate API documentation, we propose a novel framework with two modules: the APIRetriever finds useful APIs, and then the APICoder generates code using these APIs. For APIRetriever, we present a dense retrieval system and also design a friendly interaction to involve uses. For APICoder, we can directly use off-the-shelf language models, or continually pre-train the base model on a code corpus containing API information. Both modules are trained with data from public libraries and can be generalized to private ones. Furthermore, we craft three benchmarks for private libraries, named TorchDataEval, MonkeyEval, and BeatNumEval. Experimental results demonstrate the impressive performance of our framework.
In this paper, we propose a deep learning based multi-speaker direction of arrival (DOA) estimation with audio and visual signals by using permutation-free loss function. We first collect a data set for multi-modal sound source localization (SSL) where both audio and visual signals are recorded in real-life home TV scenarios. Then we propose a novel spatial annotation method to produce the ground truth of DOA for each speaker with the video data by transformation between camera coordinate and pixel coordinate according to the pin-hole camera model. With spatial location information served as another input along with acoustic feature, multi-speaker DOA estimation could be solved as a classification task of active speaker detection. Label permutation problem in multi-speaker related tasks will be addressed since the locations of each speaker are used as input. Experiments conducted on both simulated data and real data show that the proposed audio-visual DOA estimation model outperforms audio-only DOA estimation model by a large margin.
In the task of speaker diarization, the number of small-scale meetings accounts for a large proportion. When microphone arrays are employed as a recording device, its spatial information is usually ignored by most researchers. In this paper, inspired by the clustering method combining d-vector and microphone array spatial vector, we proposed a diarization method which using multi-channel microphone arrays for a meeting with no more than 4 speakers. We utilize speech enhancement to preprocess the audio from the microphone array. The Steered-Response Power Phase Transform (SRP-PHAT) algorithm are employed to get more accurate speakers, and apply the number of speakers to recluster the speech segments to achieve better performance. Finally, we fuse our system by DOVER-LAP to get the best result. We evaluated our system on the AMI corpus. Compared with the best experimental results so far, our system has achieved largely improvement in the diarization error rate (DER).
Great endeavors have been made to study AI's ability in abstract reasoning, along with which different versions of RAVEN's progressive matrices (RPM) are proposed as benchmarks. Previous works give inkling that without sophisticated design or extra meta-data containing semantic information, neural networks may still be indecisive in making decisions regarding RPM problems, after relentless training. Evidenced by thorough experiments and ablation studies, we showcase that end-to-end neural networks embodied with felicitous inductive bias, intentionally design or serendipitously match, can solve RPM problems elegantly, without the augment of any extra meta-data or preferences of any specific backbone. Our work also reveals that multi-viewpoint with multi-evaluation is a key learning strategy for successful reasoning. Finally, potential explanations for the failure of connectionist models in generalization are provided. We hope that these results will serve as inspections of AI's ability beyond perception and toward abstract reasoning. Source code can be found in https://github.com/QinglaiWeiCASIA/RavenSolver.
The task of learning a reward function from expert demonstrations suffers from high sample complexity as well as inherent limitations to what can be learned from demonstrations in a given environment. As the samples used for reward learning require human input, which is generally expensive, much effort has been dedicated towards designing more sample-efficient algorithms. Moreover, even with abundant data, current methods can still fail to learn insightful reward functions that are robust to minor changes in the environment dynamics. We approach these challenges differently than prior work by improving the sample-efficiency as well as the robustness of learned rewards through adaptively designing a sequence of demonstration environments for the expert to act in. We formalise a framework for this environment design process in which learner and expert repeatedly interact, and construct algorithms that actively seek information about the rewards by carefully curating environments for the human to demonstrate the task in.
High quality energy systems information is a crucial input to energy systems research, modeling, and decision-making. Unfortunately, precise information about energy systems is often of limited availability, incomplete, or only accessible for a substantial fee or through a non-disclosure agreement. Recently, remotely sensed data (e.g., satellite imagery, aerial photography) have emerged as a potentially rich source of energy systems information. However, the use of these data is frequently challenged by its sheer volume and complexity, precluding manual analysis. Recent breakthroughs in machine learning have enabled automated and rapid extraction of useful information from remotely sensed data, facilitating large-scale acquisition of critical energy system variables. Here we present a systematic review of the literature on this emerging topic, providing an in-depth survey and review of papers published within the past two decades. We first taxonomize the existing literature into ten major areas, spanning the energy value chain. Within each research area, we distill and critically discuss major features that are relevant to energy researchers, including, for example, key challenges regarding the accessibility and reliability of the methods. We then synthesize our findings to identify limitations and trends in the literature as a whole, and discuss opportunities for innovation.
Existing deep learning based HDRTV reconstruction methods assume one kind of tone mapping operators (TMOs) as the degradation procedure to synthesize SDRTV-HDRTV pairs for supervised training. In this paper, we argue that, although traditional TMOs exploit efficient dynamic range compression priors, they have several drawbacks on modeling the realistic degradation: information over-preservation, color bias and possible artifacts, making the trained reconstruction networks hard to generalize well to real-world cases. To solve this problem, we propose a learning-based data synthesis approach to learn the properties of real-world SDRTVs by integrating several tone mapping priors into both network structures and loss functions. In specific, we design a conditioned two-stream network with prior tone mapping results as a guidance to synthesize SDRTVs by both global and local transformations. To train the data synthesis network, we form a novel self-supervised content loss to constraint different aspects of the synthesized SDRTVs at regions with different brightness distributions and an adversarial loss to emphasize the details to be more realistic. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we synthesize SDRTV-HDRTV pairs with our method and use them to train several HDRTV reconstruction networks. Then we collect two inference datasets containing both labeled and unlabeled real-world SDRTVs, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that, the networks trained with our synthesized data generalize significantly better to these two real-world datasets than existing solutions.
Graph-to-text (G2T) generation and text-to-graph (T2G) triple extraction are two essential tasks for constructing and applying knowledge graphs. Existing unsupervised approaches turn out to be suitable candidates for jointly learning the two tasks due to their avoidance of using graph-text parallel data. However, they are composed of multiple modules and still require both entity information and relation type in the training process. To this end, we propose INFINITY, a simple yet effective unsupervised approach that does not require external annotation tools or additional parallel information. It achieves fully unsupervised graph-text mutual conversion for the first time. Specifically, INFINITY treats both G2T and T2G as a bidirectional sequence generation task by fine-tuning only one pretrained seq2seq model. A novel back-translation-based framework is then designed to automatically generate continuous synthetic parallel data. To obtain reasonable graph sequences with structural information from source texts, INFINITY employs reward-based training loss by leveraging the advantage of reward augmented maximum likelihood. As a fully unsupervised framework, INFINITY is empirically verified to outperform state-of-the-art baselines for G2T and T2G tasks.
While language Models store a massive amount of world knowledge implicitly in their parameters, even very large models often fail to encode information about rare entities and events, while incurring huge computational costs. Recently, retrieval-augmented models, such as REALM, RAG, and RETRO, have incorporated world knowledge into language generation by leveraging an external non-parametric index and have demonstrated impressive performance with constrained model sizes. However, these methods are restricted to retrieving only textual knowledge, neglecting the ubiquitous amount of knowledge in other modalities like images -- much of which contains information not covered by any text. To address this limitation, we propose the first Multimodal Retrieval-Augmented Transformer (MuRAG), which accesses an external non-parametric multimodal memory to augment language generation. MuRAG is pre-trained with a mixture of large-scale image-text and text-only corpora using a joint contrastive and generative loss. We perform experiments on two different datasets that require retrieving and reasoning over both images and text to answer a given query: WebQA, and MultimodalQA. Our results show that MuRAG achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, outperforming existing models by 10-20\% absolute on both datasets and under both distractor and full-wiki settings.
