Tomorrow's robots will need to distinguish useful information from noise when performing different tasks. A household robot for instance may continuously receive a plethora of information about the home, but needs to focus on just a small subset to successfully execute its current chore. Filtering distracting inputs that contain irrelevant data has received little attention in the reinforcement learning literature. To start resolving this, we formulate a problem setting in reinforcement learning called the $\textit{extremely noisy environment}$ (ENE), where up to $99\%$ of the input features are pure noise. Agents need to detect which features provide task-relevant information about the state of the environment. Consequently, we propose a new method termed $\textit{Automatic Noise Filtering}$ (ANF), which uses the principles of dynamic sparse training in synergy with various deep reinforcement learning algorithms. The sparse input layer learns to focus its connectivity on task-relevant features, such that ANF-SAC and ANF-TD3 outperform standard SAC and TD3 by a large margin, while using up to $95\%$ fewer weights. Furthermore, we devise a transfer learning setting for ENEs, by permuting all features of the environment after 1M timesteps to simulate the fact that other information sources can become relevant as the world evolves. This work presents RiDDLE, short for Reversible and Diversified De-identification with Latent Encryptor, to protect the identity information of people from being misused. Built upon a pre-learned StyleGAN2 generator, RiDDLE manages to encrypt and decrypt the facial identity within the latent space. The design of RiDDLE has three appealing properties. First, the encryption process is cipher-guided and hence allows diverse anonymization using different passwords. Second, the true identity can only be decrypted with the correct password, otherwise the system will produce another de-identified face to maintain the privacy. Third, both encryption and decryption share an efficient implementation, benefiting from a carefully tailored lightweight encryptor. Comparisons with existing alternatives confirm that our approach accomplishes the de-identification task with better quality, higher diversity, and stronger reversibility. We further demonstrate the effectiveness of RiDDLE in anonymizing videos. Code and models will be made publicly available.
Audio-driven talking face has attracted broad interest from academia and industry recently. However, data acquisition and labeling in audio-driven talking face are labor-intensive and costly. The lack of data resource results in poor synthesis effect. To alleviate this issue, we propose to use TTS (Text-To-Speech) for data augmentation to improve few-shot ability of the talking face system. The misalignment problem brought by the TTS audio is solved with the introduction of soft-DTW, which is first adopted in the talking face task. Moreover, features extracted by HuBERT are explored to utilize underlying information of audio, and found to be superior over other features. The proposed method achieves 17%, 14%, 38% dominance on MSE score, DTW score and user study preference repectively over the baseline model, which shows the effectiveness of improving few-shot learning for talking face system with TTS augmentation.
We analytically decide whether the broadcast transmission scheme or the distributed transmission scheme achieves the optimal age of information (AoI) performance of a multiuser system where a base station (BS) generates and transmits status updates to multiple user equipments (UEs). In the broadcast transmission scheme, the status update for all UEs is jointly encoded into a packet for transmission, while in the distributed transmission scheme, the status update for each UE is encoded individually and transmitted by following the round robin policy. For both transmission schemes, we examine three packet management strategies, namely the non-preemption strategy, the preemption in buffer strategy, and the preemption in serving strategy. We first derive new closed-form expressions for the average AoI achieved by two transmission schemes with three packet management strategies. Based on them, we compare the AoI performance of two transmission schemes in two systems, namely, the remote control system and the dynamic system. Aided by simulation results, we verify our analysis and investigate the impact of system parameters on the average AoI. For example, the distributed transmission scheme is more appropriate for the system with a large number UEs. Otherwise, the broadcast transmission scheme is more appropriate.
Open information extraction is an important NLP task that targets extracting structured information from unstructured text without limitations on the relation type or the domain of the text. This survey paper covers open information extraction technologies from 2007 to 2022 with a focus on new models not covered by previous surveys. We propose a new categorization method from the source of information perspective to accommodate the development of recent OIE technologies. In addition, we summarize three major approaches based on task settings as well as current popular datasets and model evaluation metrics. Given the comprehensive review, several future directions are shown from datasets, source of information, output form, method, and evaluation metric aspects.
This paper introduces a new large consent-driven dataset aimed at assisting in the evaluation of algorithmic bias and robustness of computer vision and audio speech models in regards to 11 attributes that are self-provided or labeled by trained annotators. The dataset includes 26,467 videos of 5,567 unique paid participants, with an average of almost 5 videos per person, recorded in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam, Philippines, and the USA, representing diverse demographic characteristics. The participants agreed for their data to be used in assessing fairness of AI models and provided self-reported age, gender, language/dialect, disability status, physical adornments, physical attributes and geo-location information, while trained annotators labeled apparent skin tone using the Fitzpatrick Skin Type and Monk Skin Tone scales, and voice timbre. Annotators also labeled for different recording setups and per-second activity annotations.
Due to the complex and changing interactions in dynamic scenarios, motion forecasting is a challenging problem in autonomous driving. Most existing works exploit static road graphs to characterize scenarios and are limited in modeling evolving spatio-temporal dependencies in dynamic scenarios. In this paper, we resort to dynamic heterogeneous graphs to model the scenario. Various scenario components including vehicles (agents) and lanes, multi-type interactions, and their changes over time are jointly encoded. Furthermore, we design a novel heterogeneous graph convolutional recurrent network, aggregating diverse interaction information and capturing their evolution, to learn to exploit intrinsic spatio-temporal dependencies in dynamic graphs and obtain effective representations of dynamic scenarios. Finally, with a motion forecasting decoder, our model predicts realistic and multi-modal future trajectories of agents and outperforms state-of-the-art published works on several motion forecasting benchmarks.
We introduce FastSurf, an accelerated neural radiance field (NeRF) framework that incorporates depth information for 3D reconstruction. A dense feature grid and shallow multi-layer perceptron are used for fast and accurate surface optimization of the entire scene. Our per-frame intrinsic refinement scheme corrects the frame-specific errors that cannot be handled by global optimization. Furthermore, FastSurf utilizes a classical real-time 3D surface reconstruction method, the truncated signed distance field (TSDF) Fusion, as prior knowledge to pretrain the feature grid to accelerate the training. The quantitative and qualitative experiments comparing the performances of FastSurf against prior work indicate that our method is capable of quickly and accurately reconstructing a scene with high-frequency details. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of our per-frame intrinsic refinement and TSDF Fusion prior learning techniques via an ablation study.
Recent advances in digitization has led to availability of multivariate time series data in various domains, in order to monitor operations in real time. Identifying abnormal data pattern and detect potential failures in these scenarios are important yet rather difficult tasks. We propose a novel unsupervised anomaly detection method for time series data. Our approach uses sequence encoder and decoder to represent the mapping between time series and hidden state, and learns bidirectional dynamics simultaneously by leveraging backward and forward temporal information in the training process. We further regularize the state space to place constraints on states of normal samples, and use Mahalanobis distance to evaluate abnormality level. Results on synthetic and real-world datasets show the superiority of the proposed method.
An increasing number of software companies have already realized the importance of storing project-related data as valuable sources of information for training prediction models. Such kind of modeling opens the door for the implementation of tailored strategies to increase the accuracy in effort estimation of whole teams of engineers. In this article we review the most recent machine learning approaches used to estimate software development efforts for both, non-agile and agile methodologies. We analyze the benefits of adopting an agile methodology in terms of effort estimation possibilities, such as the modeling of programming patterns and misestimation patterns by individual engineers. We conclude with an analysis of current and future trends, regarding software effort estimation through data-driven predictive models.
