Mining structured knowledge from tweets using named entity recognition (NER) can be beneficial for many downstream applications such as recommendation and intention under standing. With tweet posts tending to be multimodal, multimodal named entity recognition (MNER) has attracted more attention. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, which can dynamically align the image and text sequence and achieve the multi-level cross-modal learning to augment textual word representation for MNER improvement. To be specific, our framework can be split into three main stages: the first stage focuses on intra-modality representation learning to derive the implicit global and local knowledge of each modality, the second evaluates the relevance between the text and its accompanying image and integrates different grained visual information based on the relevance, the third enforces semantic refinement via iterative cross-modal interactions and co-attention. We conduct experiments on two open datasets, and the results and detailed analysis demonstrate the advantage of our model.
Deep learning techniques have gained a lot of traction in the field of NLP research. The aim of this paper is to predict the age and gender of an individual by inspecting their written text. We propose a supervised BERT-based classification technique in order to predict the age and gender of bloggers. The dataset used contains 681284 rows of data, with the information of the blogger's age, gender, and text of the blog written by them. We compare our algorithm to previous works in the same domain and achieve a better accuracy and F1 score. The accuracy reported for the prediction of age group was 84.2%, while the accuracy for the prediction of gender was 86.32%. This study relies on the raw capabilities of BERT to predict the classes of textual data efficiently. This paper shows promising capability in predicting the demographics of the author with high accuracy and can have wide applicability across multiple domains.
COVID-19 presence classification and severity prediction via (3D) thorax computed tomography scans have become important tasks in recent times. Especially for capacity planning of intensive care units, predicting the future severity of a COVID-19 patient is crucial. The presented approach follows state-of-theart techniques to aid medical professionals in these situations. It comprises an ensemble learning strategy via 5-fold cross-validation that includes transfer learning and combines pre-trained 3D-versions of ResNet34 and DenseNet121 for COVID19 classification and severity prediction respectively. Further, domain-specific preprocessing was applied to optimize model performance. In addition, medical information like the infection-lung-ratio, patient age, and sex were included. The presented model achieves an AUC of 79.0% to predict COVID-19 severity, and 83.7% AUC to classify the presence of an infection, which is comparable with other currently popular methods. This approach is implemented using the AUCMEDI framework and relies on well-known network architectures to ensure robustness and reproducibility.
Chatbots based on Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown strong capabilities in language understanding. In this study, we explore the potential of LLMs in assisting corpus-based linguistic studies through automatic annotation of texts with specific categories of linguistic information. Specifically, we examined to what extent LLMs understand the functional elements constituting the speech act of apology from a local grammar perspective, by comparing the performance of ChatGPT (powered by GPT-3.5), Bing chatbot (powered by GPT-4), and a human coder in the annotation task. The results demonstrate that Bing chatbot significantly outperformed ChatGPT in the task. Compared to human annotator, the overall performance of Bing chatbot was slightly less satisfactory. However, it already achieved high F1 scores: 99.95% for the tag of APOLOGISING, 91.91% for REASON, 95.35% for APOLOGISER, 89.74% for APOLOGISEE, and 96.47% for INTENSIFIER. Therefore, we propose that LLM-assisted annotation is a promising automated approach for corpus studies.
Financial forecasting has been an important and active area of machine learning research, as even the most modest advantage in predictive accuracy can be parlayed into significant financial gains. Recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) bring the opportunity to leverage textual data, such as earnings reports of publicly traded companies, to predict the return rate for an asset. However, when dealing with such a sensitive task, the consistency of models -- their invariance under meaning-preserving alternations in input -- is a crucial property for building user trust. Despite this, current financial forecasting methods do not consider consistency. To address this problem, we propose FinTrust, an evaluation tool that assesses logical consistency in financial text. Using FinTrust, we show that the consistency of state-of-the-art NLP models for financial forecasting is poor. Our analysis of the performance degradation caused by meaning-preserving alternations suggests that current text-based methods are not suitable for robustly predicting market information. Knowledge graphs (KGs) have become important auxiliary information for helping recommender systems obtain a good understanding of user preferences. Despite recent advances in KG-based recommender systems, existing methods are prone to suboptimal performance due to the following two drawbacks: 1) current KG-based methods over-emphasize the heterogeneous structural information within a KG and overlook the underlying semantics of its connections, hindering the recommender from distilling the explicit user preferences; and 2) the inherent incompleteness of a KG (i.e., missing facts, relations and entities) will deteriorate the information extracted from KG and weaken the representation learning of recommender systems. To tackle the aforementioned problems, we investigate the potential of jointly incorporating the structural and semantic information within a KG to model user preferences in finer granularity. A new framework for KG-based recommender systems, namely \textit{K}nowledge \textit{I}nfomax \textit{R}ecommender \textit{S}ystem with \textit{C}ontrastive \textit{L}earning (KIRS-CL) is proposed in this paper. Distinct from previous KG-based approaches, KIRS-CL utilizes structural and connectivity information with high-quality item embeddings learned by encoding KG triples with a pre-trained language model. These well-trained entity representations enable KIRS-CL to find the item to recommend via the preference connection between the user and the item. Additionally, to improve the generalizability of our framework, we introduce a contrastive warm-up learning strategy, making it capable of dealing with both warm- and cold-start recommendation scenarios. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate remarkable improvements over state-of-the-art baselines.
Autonomous agents (robots) face tremendous challenges while interacting with heterogeneous human agents in close proximity. One of these challenges is that the autonomous agent does not have an accurate model tailored to the specific human that the autonomous agent is interacting with, which could sometimes result in inefficient human-robot interaction and suboptimal system dynamics. Developing an online method to enable the autonomous agent to learn information about the human model is therefore an ongoing research goal. Existing approaches position the robot as a passive learner in the environment to observe the physical states and the associated human response. This passive design, however, only allows the robot to obtain information that the human chooses to exhibit, which sometimes doesn't capture the human's full intention. In this work, we present an online optimization-based probing procedure for the autonomous agent to clarify its belief about the human model in an active manner. By optimizing an information radius, the autonomous agent chooses the action that most challenges its current conviction. This procedure allows the autonomous agent to actively probe the human agents to reveal information that's previously unavailable to the autonomous agent. With this gathered information, the autonomous agent can interactively influence the human agent for some designated objectives. Our main contributions include a coherent theoretical framework that unifies the probing and influence procedures and two case studies in autonomous driving that show how active probing can help to create better participant experience during influence, like higher efficiency or less perturbations.
Vision Transformers have shown promising progress in various object detection tasks, including monocular 2D/3D detection and surround-view 3D detection. However, when used in essential and classic stereo 3D object detection, directly adopting those surround-view Transformers leads to slow convergence and significant precision drops. We argue that one of the causes of this defect is that the surround-view Transformers do not consider the stereo-specific image correspondence information. In a surround-view system, the overlapping areas are small, and thus correspondence is not a primary issue. In this paper, we explore the model design of vision Transformers in stereo 3D object detection, focusing particularly on extracting and encoding the task-specific image correspondence information. To achieve this goal, we present TS3D, a Transformer-based Stereo-aware 3D object detector. In the TS3D, a Disparity-Aware Positional Encoding (DAPE) model is proposed to embed the image correspondence information into stereo features. The correspondence is encoded as normalized disparity and is used in conjunction with sinusoidal 2D positional encoding to provide the location information of the 3D scene. To extract enriched multi-scale stereo features, we propose a Stereo Reserving Feature Pyramid Network (SRFPN). The SRFPN is designed to reserve the correspondence information while fusing intra-scale and aggregating cross-scale stereo features. Our proposed TS3D achieves a 41.29% Moderate Car detection average precision on the KITTI test set and takes 88 ms to detect objects from each binocular image pair. It is competitive with advanced counterparts in terms of both precision and inference speed.
Social media platforms empower us in several ways, from information dissemination to consumption. While these platforms are useful in promoting citizen journalism, public awareness etc., they have misuse potentials. Malicious users use them to disseminate hate-speech, offensive content, rumor etc. to gain social and political agendas or to harm individuals, entities and organizations. Often times, general users unconsciously share information without verifying it, or unintentionally post harmful messages. Some of such content often get deleted either by the platform due to the violation of terms and policies, or users themselves for different reasons, e.g., regrets. There is a wide range of studies in characterizing, understanding and predicting deleted content. However, studies which aims to identify the fine-grained reasons (e.g., posts are offensive, hate speech or no identifiable reason) behind deleted content, are limited. In this study we address this gap, by identifying deleted tweets, particularly within the Arabic context, and labeling them with a corresponding fine-grained disinformation category. We then develop models that can predict the potentiality of tweets getting deleted, as well as the potential reasons behind deletion. Such models can help in moderating social media posts before even posting.
Deep audio representation learning using multi-modal audio-visual data often leads to a better performance compared to uni-modal approaches. However, in real-world scenarios both modalities are not always available at the time of inference, leading to performance degradation by models trained for multi-modal inference. In this work, we propose a novel approach for deep audio representation learning using audio-visual data when the video modality is absent at inference. For this purpose, we adopt teacher-student knowledge distillation under the framework of learning using privileged information (LUPI). While the previous methods proposed for LUPI use soft-labels generated by the teacher, in our proposed method we use embeddings learned by the teacher to train the student network. We integrate our method in two different settings: sequential data where the features are divided into multiple segments throughout time, and non-sequential data where the entire features are treated as one whole segment. In the non-sequential setting both the teacher and student networks are comprised of an encoder component and a task header. We use the embeddings produced by the encoder component of the teacher to train the encoder of the student, while the task header of the student is trained using ground-truth labels. In the sequential setting, the networks have an additional aggregation component that is placed between the encoder and task header. We use two sets of embeddings produced by the encoder and aggregation component of the teacher to train the student. Similar to the non-sequential setting, the task header of the student network is trained using ground-truth labels. We test our framework on two different audio-visual tasks, namely speaker recognition and speech emotion recognition and show considerable improvements over sole audio-based recognition as well as prior works that use LUPI.
