Bayesian experimental design is a technique that allows to efficiently select measurements to characterize a physical system by maximizing the expected information gain. Recent developments in deep neural networks and normalizing flows allow for a more efficient approximation of the posterior and thus the extension of this technique to complex high-dimensional situations. In this paper, we show how this approach holds promise for adaptive measurement strategies to characterize present-day quantum technology platforms. In particular, we focus on arrays of coupled cavities and qubit arrays. Both represent model systems of high relevance for modern applications, like quantum simulations and computing, and both have been realized in platforms where measurement and control can be exploited to characterize and counteract unavoidable disorder. Thus, they represent ideal targets for applications of Bayesian experimental design.
We use angular clustering of luminous red galaxies from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging surveys to constrain the local primordial non-Gaussianity parameter fNL. Our sample comprises over 12 million targets, covering 14,000 square degrees of the sky, with redshifts in the range 0.2< z < 1.35. We identify Galactic extinction, survey depth, and astronomical seeing as the primary sources of systematic error, and employ linear regression and artificial neural networks to alleviate non-cosmological excess clustering on large scales. Our methods are tested against log-normal simulations with and without fNL and systematics, showing superior performance of the neural network treatment in reducing remaining systematics. Assuming the universality relation, we find fNL $= 47^{+14(+29)}_{-11(-22)}$ at 68\%(95\%) confidence. With a more aggressive treatment, including regression against the full set of imaging maps, our maximum likelihood value shifts slightly to fNL$ \sim 50$ and the uncertainty on fNL increases due to the removal of large-scale clustering information. We apply a series of robustness tests (e.g., cuts on imaging, declination, or scales used) that show consistency in the obtained constraints. Despite extensive efforts to mitigate systematics, our measurements indicate fNL > 0 with a 99.9 percent confidence level. This outcome raises concerns as it could be attributed to unforeseen systematics, including calibration errors or uncertainties associated with low-\ell systematics in the extinction template. Alternatively, it could suggest a scale-dependent fNL model--causing significant non-Gaussianity around large-scale structure while leaving cosmic microwave background scales unaffected. Our results encourage further studies of fNL with DESI spectroscopic samples, where the inclusion of 3D clustering modes should help separate imaging systematics.
The Common Information (CI) approach provides a systematic way to transform a multi-agent stochastic control problem to a single-agent partially observed Markov decision problem (POMDP) called the coordinator's POMDP. However, such a POMDP can be hard to solve due to its extraordinarily large action space. We propose a new algorithm for multi-agent stochastic control problems, called coordinator's heuristic search value iteration (CHSVI), that combines the CI approach and point-based POMDP algorithms for large action spaces. We demonstrate the algorithm through optimally solving several benchmark problems.
Recently, methods for neural surface representation and rendering, for example NeuS, have shown that learning neural implicit surfaces through volume rendering is becoming increasingly popular and making good progress. However, these methods still face some challenges. Existing methods lack a direct representation of depth information, which makes object reconstruction unrestricted by geometric features, resulting in poor reconstruction of objects with texture and color features. This is because existing methods only use surface normals to represent implicit surfaces without using depth information. Therefore, these methods cannot model the detailed surface features of objects well. To address this problem, we propose a neural implicit surface learning method called Depth-NeuS based on depth information optimization for multi-view reconstruction. In this paper, we introduce depth loss to explicitly constrain SDF regression and introduce geometric consistency loss to optimize for low-texture areas. Specific experiments show that Depth-NeuS outperforms existing technologies in multiple scenarios and achieves high-quality surface reconstruction in multiple scenarios.
Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has seen remarkable success in the control of single robots. However, applying DRL to robot swarms presents significant challenges. A critical challenge is non-stationarity, which occurs when two or more robots update individual or shared policies concurrently, thereby engaging in an interdependent training process with no guarantees of convergence. Circumventing non-stationarity typically involves training the robots with global information about other agents' states and/or actions. In contrast, in this paper we explore how to remove the need for global information. We pose our problem as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, due to the absence of global knowledge on other agents. Using collective transport as a testbed scenario, we study two approaches to multi-agent training. In the first, the robots exchange no messages, and are trained to rely on implicit communication through push-and-pull on the object to transport. In the second approach, we introduce Global State Prediction (GSP), a network trained to forma a belief over the swarm as a whole and predict its future states. We provide a comprehensive study over four well-known deep reinforcement learning algorithms in environments with obstacles, measuring performance as the successful transport of the object to the goal within a desired time-frame. Through an ablation study, we show that including GSP boosts performance and increases robustness when compared with methods that use global knowledge.
Synthesizing novel view images from a few views is a challenging but practical problem. Existing methods often struggle with producing high-quality results or necessitate per-object optimization in such few-view settings due to the insufficient information provided. In this work, we explore leveraging the strong 2D priors in pre-trained diffusion models for synthesizing novel view images. 2D diffusion models, nevertheless, lack 3D awareness, leading to distorted image synthesis and compromising the identity. To address these problems, we propose DreamSparse, a framework that enables the frozen pre-trained diffusion model to generate geometry and identity-consistent novel view image. Specifically, DreamSparse incorporates a geometry module designed to capture 3D features from sparse views as a 3D prior. Subsequently, a spatial guidance model is introduced to convert these 3D feature maps into spatial information for the generative process. This information is then used to guide the pre-trained diffusion model, enabling it to generate geometrically consistent images without tuning it. Leveraging the strong image priors in the pre-trained diffusion models, DreamSparse is capable of synthesizing high-quality novel views for both object and scene-level images and generalising to open-set images. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework can effectively synthesize novel view images from sparse views and outperforms baselines in both trained and open-set category images. We study whether automatically-induced prompts that effectively extract information from a language model can also be used, out-of-the-box, to probe other language models for the same information. After confirming that discrete prompts induced with the AutoPrompt algorithm outperform manual and semi-manual prompts on the slot-filling task, we demonstrate a drop in performance for AutoPrompt prompts learned on a model and tested on another. We introduce a way to induce prompts by mixing language models at training time that results in prompts that generalize well across models. We conduct an extensive analysis of the induced prompts, finding that the more general prompts include a larger proportion of existing English words and have a less order-dependent and more uniform distribution of information across their component tokens. Our work provides preliminary evidence that it's possible to generate discrete prompts that can be induced once and used with a number of different models, and gives insights on the properties characterizing such prompts.
Human motion prediction has achieved a brilliant performance with the help of CNNs, which facilitates human-machine cooperation. However, currently, there is no work evaluating the potential risk in human motion prediction when facing adversarial attacks, which may cause danger in real applications. The adversarial attack will face two problems against human motion prediction: 1. For naturalness, pose data is highly related to the physical dynamics of human skeletons where Lp norm constraints cannot constrain the adversarial example well; 2. Unlike the pixel value in images, pose data is diverse at scale because of the different acquisition equipment and the data processing, which makes it hard to set fixed parameters to perform attacks. To solve the problems above, we propose a new adversarial attack method that perturbs the input human motion sequence by maximizing the prediction error with physical constraints. Specifically, we introduce a novel adaptable scheme that facilitates the attack to suit the scale of the target pose and two physical constraints to enhance the imperceptibility of the adversarial example. The evaluating experiments on three datasets show that the prediction errors of all target models are enlarged significantly, which means current convolution-based human motion prediction models can be easily disturbed under the proposed attack. The quantitative analysis shows that prior knowledge and semantic information modeling can be the key to the adversarial robustness of human motion predictors. The qualitative results indicate that the adversarial sample is hard to be noticed when compared frame by frame but is relatively easy to be detected when the sample is animated.
Augmented Reality (AR) has been used to facilitate surgical guidance during External Ventricular Drain (EVD) surgery, reducing the risks of misplacement in manual operations. During this procedure, the key challenge is accurately estimating the spatial relationship between pre-operative images and actual patient anatomy in AR environment. This research proposes a novel framework utilizing Time of Flight (ToF) depth sensors integrated in commercially available AR Head Mounted Devices (HMD) for precise EVD surgical guidance. As previous studies have proven depth errors for ToF sensors, we first assessed their properties on AR-HMDs. Subsequently, a depth error model and patient-specific parameter identification method are introduced for accurate surface information. A tracking pipeline combining retro-reflective markers and point clouds is then proposed for accurate head tracking. The head surface is reconstructed using depth data for spatial registration, avoiding fixing tracking targets rigidly on the patient's skull. Firstly, $7.580\pm 1.488 mm$ depth value error was revealed on human skin, indicating the significance of depth correction. Our results showed that the error was reduced by over $85\%$ using proposed depth correction method on head phantoms in different materials. Meanwhile, the head surface reconstructed with corrected depth data achieved sub-millimetre accuracy. An experiment on sheep head revealed $0.79 mm$ reconstruction error. Furthermore, a user study was conducted for the performance in simulated EVD surgery, where five surgeons performed nine k-wire injections on a head phantom with virtual guidance. Results of this study revealed $2.09 \pm 0.16 mm$ translational accuracy and $2.97\pm 0.91$ degree orientational accuracy.
In the current digitalization era, capturing and effectively representing knowledge is crucial in most real-world scenarios. In this context, knowledge graphs represent a potent tool for retrieving and organizing a vast amount of information in a properly interconnected and interpretable structure. However, their generation is still challenging and often requires considerable human effort and domain expertise, hampering the scalability and flexibility across different application fields. This paper proposes an innovative knowledge graph generation approach that leverages the potential of the latest generative large language models, such as GPT-3.5, that can address all the main critical issues in knowledge graph building. The approach is conveyed in a pipeline that comprises novel iterative zero-shot and external knowledge-agnostic strategies in the main stages of the generation process. Our unique manifold approach may encompass significant benefits to the scientific community. In particular, the main contribution can be summarized by: (i) an innovative strategy for iteratively prompting large language models to extract relevant components of the final graph; (ii) a zero-shot strategy for each prompt, meaning that there is no need for providing examples for "guiding" the prompt result; (iii) a scalable solution, as the adoption of LLMs avoids the need for any external resources or human expertise. To assess the effectiveness of our proposed model, we performed experiments on a dataset that covered a specific domain. We claim that our proposal is a suitable solution for scalable and versatile knowledge graph construction and may be applied to different and novel contexts.
