Cough is a primary symptom of most respiratory diseases, and changes in cough characteristics provide valuable information for diagnosing respiratory diseases. The characterization of cough sounds still lacks concrete evidence, which makes it difficult to accurately distinguish between different types of coughs and other sounds. The objective of this research work is to characterize cough sounds with voiced content and cough sounds without voiced content. Further, the cough sound characteristics are compared with the characteristics of speech. The proposed method to achieve this goal utilized spectral roll-off, spectral entropy, spectral flatness, spectral flux, zero crossing rate, spectral centroid, and spectral bandwidth attributes which describe the cough sounds related to the respiratory system, glottal information, and voice model. These attributes are then subjected to statistical analysis using the measures of minimum, maximum, mean, median, and standard deviation. The experimental results show that the mean and frequency distribution of spectral roll-off, spectral centroid, and spectral bandwidth are found to be higher for cough sounds than for speech signals. Spectral flatness levels in cough sounds will rise to 0.22, whereas spectral flux varies between 0.3 and 0.6. The Zero Crossing Rate (ZCR) of most frames of cough sounds is between 0.05 and 0.4. These attributes contribute significant information while characterizing cough sounds.
Point cloud registration is a task to estimate the rigid transformation between two unaligned scans, which plays an important role in many computer vision applications. Previous learning-based works commonly focus on supervised registration, which have limitations in practice. Recently, with the advance of inexpensive RGB-D sensors, several learning-based works utilize RGB-D data to achieve unsupervised registration. However, most of existing unsupervised methods follow a cascaded design or fuse RGB-D data in a unidirectional manner, which do not fully exploit the complementary information in the RGB-D data. To leverage the complementary information more effectively, we propose a network implementing multi-scale bidirectional fusion between RGB images and point clouds generated from depth images. By bidirectionally fusing visual and geometric features in multi-scales, more distinctive deep features for correspondence estimation can be obtained, making our registration more accurate. Extensive experiments on ScanNet and 3DMatch demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance. Code will be released at https://github.com/phdymz/PointMBF
We present PAT, a transformer-based network that learns complex temporal co-occurrence action dependencies in a video by exploiting multi-scale temporal features. In existing methods, the self-attention mechanism in transformers loses the temporal positional information, which is essential for robust action detection. To address this issue, we (i) embed relative positional encoding in the self-attention mechanism and (ii) exploit multi-scale temporal relationships by designing a novel non hierarchical network, in contrast to the recent transformer-based approaches that use a hierarchical structure. We argue that joining the self-attention mechanism with multiple sub-sampling processes in the hierarchical approaches results in increased loss of positional information. We evaluate the performance of our proposed approach on two challenging dense multi-label benchmark datasets, and show that PAT improves the current state-of-the-art result by 1.1% and 0.6% mAP on the Charades and MultiTHUMOS datasets, respectively, thereby achieving the new state-of-the-art mAP at 26.5% and 44.6%, respectively. We also perform extensive ablation studies to examine the impact of the different components of our proposed network.
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a widely available diagnostic tool that allows for a cost-effective and fast assessment of the cardiovascular health. However, more detailed examination with expensive cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is often preferred for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. While providing detailed visualization of the cardiac anatomy, CMR imaging is not widely available due to long scan times and high costs. To address this issue, we propose the first self-supervised contrastive approach that transfers domain-specific information from CMR images to ECG embeddings. Our approach combines multimodal contrastive learning with masked data modeling to enable holistic cardiac screening solely from ECG data. In extensive experiments using data from 40,044 UK Biobank subjects, we demonstrate the utility and generalizability of our method. We predict the subject-specific risk of various cardiovascular diseases and determine distinct cardiac phenotypes solely from ECG data. In a qualitative analysis, we demonstrate that our learned ECG embeddings incorporate information from CMR image regions of interest. We make our entire pipeline publicly available, including the source code and pre-trained model weights.
The Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) has recently shown remarkable generalization on "zero-shot" training and has applied to many downstream tasks. We explore the adaptation of CLIP to achieve a more efficient and generalized action recognition method. We propose that the key lies in explicitly modeling the motion cues flowing in video frames. To that end, we design a two-stream motion modeling block to capture motion and spatial information at the same time. And then, the obtained motion cues are utilized to drive a dynamic prompts learner to generate motion-aware prompts, which contain much semantic information concerning human actions. In addition, we propose a multimodal communication block to achieve a collaborative learning and further improve the performance. We conduct extensive experiments on HMDB-51, UCF-101, and Kinetics-400 datasets. Our method outperforms most existing state-of-the-art methods by a significant margin on "few-shot" and "zero-shot" training. We also achieve competitive performance on "closed-set" training with extremely few trainable parameters and additional computational costs.
Accelerated MRI protocols routinely involve a predefined sampling pattern that undersamples the k-space. Finding an optimal pattern can enhance the reconstruction quality, however this optimization is a challenging task. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel deep learning framework, AutoSamp, based on variational information maximization that enables joint optimization of sampling pattern and reconstruction of MRI scans. We represent the encoder as a non-uniform Fast Fourier Transform that allows continuous optimization of k-space sample locations on a non-Cartesian plane, and the decoder as a deep reconstruction network. Experiments on public MRI datasets show improved reconstruction quality of the proposed AutoSamp method over the prevailing variable density and variable density Poisson disc sampling. We demonstrate that our data-driven sampling optimization method achieves 4.4dB, 2.0dB, 0.75dB, 0.7dB PSNR improvements over reconstruction with Poisson Disc masks for acceleration factors of R = 5, 10, 15, 25, respectively. Furthermore, we analyze the characteristics of the learned sampling patterns with respect to changes in acceleration factor, measurement noise, underlying anatomy, and coil sensitivities. We show that all these factors contribute to the optimization result by affecting the sampling density, k-space coverage and point spread functions of the learned sampling patterns.
The task of lip synchronization (lip-sync) seeks to match the lips of human faces with different audio. It has various applications in the film industry as well as for creating virtual avatars and for video conferencing. This is a challenging problem as one needs to simultaneously introduce detailed, realistic lip movements while preserving the identity, pose, emotions, and image quality. Many of the previous methods trying to solve this problem suffer from image quality degradation due to a lack of complete contextual information. In this paper, we present Diff2Lip, an audio-conditioned diffusion-based model which is able to do lip synchronization in-the-wild while preserving these qualities. We train our model on Voxceleb2, a video dataset containing in-the-wild talking face videos. Extensive studies show that our method outperforms popular methods like Wav2Lip and PC-AVS in Fr\'echet inception distance (FID) metric and Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) of the users. We show results on both reconstruction (same audio-video inputs) as well as cross (different audio-video inputs) settings on Voxceleb2 and LRW datasets. While state-of-the-art monocular depth estimation approaches achieve impressive results in ideal settings, they are highly unreliable under challenging illumination and weather conditions, such as at nighttime or in the presence of rain. In this paper, we uncover these safety-critical issues and tackle them with md4all: a simple and effective solution that works reliably under both adverse and ideal conditions, as well as for different types of learning supervision. We achieve this by exploiting the efficacy of existing methods under perfect settings. Therefore, we provide valid training signals independently of what is in the input. First, we generate a set of complex samples corresponding to the normal training ones. Then, we train the model by guiding its self- or full-supervision by feeding the generated samples and computing the standard losses on the corresponding original images. Doing so enables a single model to recover information across diverse conditions without modifications at inference time. Extensive experiments on two challenging public datasets, namely nuScenes and Oxford RobotCar, demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques, outperforming prior works by a large margin in both standard and challenging conditions. The past few years have witnessed the immense success of object detection, while current excellent detectors struggle on tackling size-limited instances. Concretely, the well-known challenge of low overlaps between the priors and object regions leads to a constrained sample pool for optimization, and the paucity of discriminative information further aggravates the recognition. To alleviate the aforementioned issues, we propose CFINet, a two-stage framework tailored for small object detection based on the Coarse-to-fine pipeline and Feature Imitation learning. Firstly, we introduce Coarse-to-fine RPN (CRPN) to ensure sufficient and high-quality proposals for small objects through the dynamic anchor selection strategy and cascade regression. Then, we equip the conventional detection head with a Feature Imitation (FI) branch to facilitate the region representations of size-limited instances that perplex the model in an imitation manner. Moreover, an auxiliary imitation loss following supervised contrastive learning paradigm is devised to optimize this branch. When integrated with Faster RCNN, CFINet achieves state-of-the-art performance on the large-scale small object detection benchmarks, SODA-D and SODA-A, underscoring its superiority over baseline detector and other mainstream detection approaches.
The objective of the sound source localization task is to enable machines to detect the location of sound-making objects within a visual scene. While the audio modality provides spatial cues to locate the sound source, existing approaches only use audio as an auxiliary role to compare spatial regions of the visual modality. Humans, on the other hand, utilize both audio and visual modalities as spatial cues to locate sound sources. In this paper, we propose an audio-visual spatial integration network that integrates spatial cues from both modalities to mimic human behavior when detecting sound-making objects. Additionally, we introduce a recursive attention network to mimic human behavior of iterative focusing on objects, resulting in more accurate attention regions. To effectively encode spatial information from both modalities, we propose audio-visual pair matching loss and spatial region alignment loss. By utilizing the spatial cues of audio-visual modalities and recursively focusing objects, our method can perform more robust sound source localization. Comprehensive experimental results on the Flickr SoundNet and VGG-Sound Source datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over existing approaches.
