Infrared (IR) microscopes measure spectral information that quantifies molecular content to assign the identity of biomedical cells but the spatial quality of optical microscopy to appreciate morphologic features. Here, we propose a method to utilize the semantic information of cellular identity from IR imaging with the morphologic detail of pathology images in a deep learning-based approach to image super-resolution. Using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), we enhance the spatial detail in IR imaging beyond the diffraction limit while retaining their spectral contrast. This technique can be rapidly integrated with modern IR microscopes to provide a framework useful for routine pathology.
Robots coexisting with humans in their environment and performing services for them need the ability to interact with them. One particular requirement for such robots is that they are able to understand spatial relations and can place objects in accordance with the spatial relations expressed by their user. In this work, we present a convolutional neural network for estimating pixelwise object placement probabilities for a set of spatial relations from a single input image. During training, our network receives the learning signal by classifying hallucinated high-level scene representations as an auxiliary task. Unlike previous approaches, our method does not require ground truth data for the pixelwise relational probabilities or 3D models of the objects, which significantly expands the applicability in practical applications. Our results obtained using real-world data and human-robot experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in reasoning about the best way to place objects to reproduce a spatial relation.
Transparent objects are a common part of everyday life, yet they possess unique visual properties that make them incredibly difficult for standard 3D sensors to produce accurate depth estimates for. In many cases, they often appear as noisy or distorted approximations of the surfaces that lie behind them. To address these challenges, we present ClearGrasp -- a deep learning approach for estimating accurate 3D geometry of transparent objects from a single RGB-D image for robotic manipulation. Given a single RGB-D image of transparent objects, ClearGrasp uses deep convolutional networks to infer surface normals, masks of transparent surfaces, and occlusion boundaries. It then uses these outputs to refine the initial depth estimates for all transparent surfaces in the scene. To train and test ClearGrasp, we construct a large-scale synthetic dataset of over 50,000 RGB-D images, as well as a real-world test benchmark with 286 RGB-D images of transparent objects and their ground truth geometries. The experiments demonstrate that ClearGrasp is substantially better than monocular depth estimation baselines and is capable of generalizing to real-world images and novel objects. We also demonstrate that ClearGrasp can be applied out-of-the-box to improve grasping algorithms' performance on transparent objects. Code, data, and benchmarks will be released. Current systems used by the Tunisian national archives for the automatic transcription of archival documents are hindered by many issues related to the performance of the optical character recognition (OCR) tools. Indeed, using a classical OCR system to transcribe and index ancient Arabic documents is not a straightforward task due to the idiosyncrasies of this category of documents, such as noise and degradation. Thus, applying an enhancement method or a denoising technique remains an essential prerequisite step to ease the archival document image analysis task. The state-of-the-art methods addressing the use of degraded document image enhancement and denoising are mainly based on applying filters. The most common filtering techniques applied to color images in the literature may be categorized into four approaches: scalar, marginal, vector and hybrid. To provide a set of comprehensive guidelines on the strengths and weaknesses of these filtering approaches, a thorough comparative study is proposed in this article. Numerical experiments are carried out in this study on color archival document images to show and quantify the performance of each assessed filtering approach.
Deep Learning (DL) systems are key enablers for engineering intelligent applications due to their ability to solve complex tasks such as image recognition and machine translation. Nevertheless, using DL systems in safety- and security-critical applications requires to provide testing evidence for their dependable operation. Recent research in this direction focuses on adapting testing criteria from traditional software engineering as a means of increasing confidence for their correct behaviour. However, they are inadequate in capturing the intrinsic properties exhibited by these systems. We bridge this gap by introducing DeepImportance, a systematic testing methodology accompanied by an Importance-Driven (IDC) test adequacy criterion for DL systems. Applying IDC enables to establish a layer-wise functional understanding of the importance of DL system components and use this information to assess the semantic diversity of a test set. Our empirical evaluation on several DL systems, across multiple DL datasets and with state-of-the-art adversarial generation techniques demonstrates the usefulness and effectiveness of DeepImportance and its ability to support the engineering of more robust DL systems.
Large-scale annotation of image segmentation datasets is often prohibitively expensive, as it usually requires a huge number of worker hours to obtain high-quality results. Abundant and reliable data has been, however, crucial for the advances on image understanding tasks achieved by deep learning models. In this paper, we introduce FreeLabel, an intuitive open-source web interface that allows users to obtain high-quality segmentation masks with just a few freehand scribbles, in a matter of seconds. The efficacy of FreeLabel is quantitatively demonstrated by experimental results on the PASCAL dataset as well as on a dataset from the agricultural domain. Designed to benefit the computer vision community, FreeLabel can be used for both crowdsourced or private annotation and has a modular structure that can be easily adapted for any image dataset.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are expected to replace human in hazardous tasks of surface inspection due to their flexibility in operating space and capability of collecting high quality visual data. In this study, we propose enhanced hierarchical convolutional neural networks (HCNN) to detect cracks from image data collected by UAVs. Unlike traditional HCNN, here a set of branch networks is utilised to reduce the obscuration in the down-sampling process. Moreover, the feature preserving blocks combine the current and previous terms from the convolutional blocks to provide input to the loss functions. As a result, the weights of resized images can be reduced to minimise the information loss. Experiments on images of different crack datasets have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed HCNN.
Multi-view subspace clustering aims to divide a set of multisource data into several groups according to their underlying subspace structure. Although the spectral clustering based methods achieve promotion in multi-view clustering, their utility is limited by the separate learning manner in which affinity matrix construction and cluster indicator estimation are isolated. In this paper, we propose to jointly learn the self-representation, continue and discrete cluster indicators in an unified model. Our model can explore the subspace structure of each view and fusion them to facilitate clustering simultaneously. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms other existing competitive multi-view clustering methods.
The Lucid methods described by Olah et al. (2018) provide a way to inspect the inner workings of neural networks trained on image classification tasks using feature visualization. Such methods have generally been applied to networks trained on visually rich, large-scale image datasets like ImageNet, which enables them to produce enticing feature visualizations. To investigate these methods further, we applied them to classifiers trained to perform the much simpler (in terms of dataset size and visual richness), yet challenging task of distinguishing between different kinds of white blood cell from microscope images. Such a task makes generating useful feature visualizations difficult, as the discriminative features are inherently hard to identify and interpret. We address this by presenting the "Illuminated Decision Tree" approach, in which we use a neural network trained on the task as a feature extractor, then learn a decision tree based on these features, and provide Lucid visualizations for each node in the tree. We demonstrate our approach with several examples, showing how this approach could be useful both in model development and debugging, and when explaining model outputs to non-experts.
We show that the sum of the implicit generator log-density $\log p_g$ of a GAN with the logit score of the discriminator defines an energy function which yields the true data density when the generator is imperfect but the discriminator is optimal, thus making it possible to improve on the typical generator (with implicit density $p_g$). To make that practical, we show that sampling from this modified density can be achieved by sampling in latent space according to an energy-based model induced by the sum of the latent prior log-density and the discriminator output score. This can be achieved by running a Langevin MCMC in latent space and then applying the generator function, which we call Discriminator Driven Latent Sampling~(DDLS). We show that DDLS is highly efficient compared to previous methods which work in the high-dimensional pixel space and can be applied to improve on previously trained GANs of many types. We evaluate DDLS on both synthetic and real-world datasets qualitatively and quantitatively. On CIFAR-10, DDLS substantially improves the Inception Score of an off-the-shelf pre-trained SN-GAN~\citep{sngan} from $8.22$ to $9.09$ which is even comparable to the class-conditional BigGAN~\citep{biggan} model. This achieves a new state-of-the-art in unconditional image synthesis setting without introducing extra parameters or additional training.
