The use of fundus images for the early screening of eye diseases is of great clinical importance. Due to its powerful performance, deep learning is becoming more and more popular in related applications, such as lesion segmentation, biomarkers segmentation, disease diagnosis and image synthesis. Therefore, it is very necessary to summarize the recent developments in deep learning for fundus images with a review paper. In this review, we introduce 143 application papers with a carefully designed hierarchy. Moreover, 33 publicly available datasets are presented. Summaries and analyses are provided for each task. Finally, limitations common to all tasks are revealed and possible solutions are given. Vision-and-Language Pretraining (VLP) has improved performance on various joint vision-and-language downstream tasks. Current approaches for VLP heavily rely on image feature extraction processes, most of which involve region supervisions (e.g., object detection) and the convolutional architecture (e.g., ResNet). Although disregarded in the literature, we find it problematic in terms of both (1) efficiency/speed, that simply extracting input features requires much more computation than the actual multimodal interaction steps; and (2) expressive power, as it is upper bounded to the expressive power of the visual encoder and its predefined visual vocabulary. In this paper, we present a minimal VLP model, Vision-and-Language Transformer (ViLT), monolithic in the sense that processing of visual inputs is drastically simplified to just the same convolution-free manner that we process textual inputs. We show that ViLT is up to 60 times faster than previous VLP models, yet with competitive or better downstream task performance.
Visual Question Answering (VQA) has achieved great success thanks to the fast development of deep neural networks (DNN). On the other hand, the data augmentation, as one of the major tricks for DNN, has been widely used in many computer vision tasks. However, there are few works studying the data augmentation problem for VQA and none of the existing image based augmentation schemes (such as rotation and flipping) can be directly applied to VQA due to its semantic structure -- an $\langle image, question, answer\rangle$ triplet needs to be maintained correctly. For example, a direction related Question-Answer (QA) pair may not be true if the associated image is rotated or flipped. In this paper, instead of directly manipulating images and questions, we use generated adversarial examples for both images and questions as the augmented data. The augmented examples do not change the visual properties presented in the image as well as the \textbf{semantic} meaning of the question, the correctness of the $\langle image, question, answer\rangle$ is thus still maintained. We then use adversarial learning to train a classic VQA model (BUTD) with our augmented data. We find that we not only improve the overall performance on VQAv2, but also can withstand adversarial attack effectively, compared to the baseline model. In this work, we report on the integrated sensorimotor control of the Pisa/IIT SoftHand, an anthropomorphic soft robot hand designed around the principle of adaptive synergies, with the BRL tactile fingertip (TacTip), a soft biomimetic optical tactile sensor based on the human sense of touch. Our focus is how a sense of touch can be used to control an anthropomorphic hand with one degree of actuation, based on an integration that respects the hand's mechanical functionality. We consider: (i) closed-loop tactile control to establish a light contact on an unknown held object, based on the structural similarity with an undeformed tactile image; and (ii) controlling the estimated pose of an edge feature of a held object, using a convolutional neural network approach developed for controlling other sensors in the TacTip family. Overall, this gives a foundation to endow soft robotic hands with human-like touch, with implications for autonomous grasping, manipulation, human-robot interaction and prosthetics. 3D perception using sensors under vehicle industrial standard is the rigid demand in autonomous driving. MEMS LiDAR emerges with irresistible trend due to its lower cost, more robust, and meeting the mass-production standards. However, it suffers small field of view (FoV), slowing down the step of its population. In this paper, we propose LEAD, i.e., LiDAR Extender for Autonomous Driving, to extend the MEMS LiDAR by coupled image w.r.t both FoV and range. We propose a multi-stage propagation strategy based on depth distributions and uncertainty map, which shows effective propagation ability. Moreover, our depth outpainting/propagation network follows a teacher-student training fashion, which transfers depth estimation ability to depth completion network without any scale error passed. To validate the LiDAR extension quality, we utilize a high-precise laser scanner to generate a ground-truth dataset. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations show that our scheme outperforms SOTAs with a large margin. We believe the proposed LEAD along with the dataset would benefit the community w.r.t depth researches.
The advent of Deep Learning models like VGG-16 and Resnet-50 has considerably revolutionized the field of image classification, and by using these Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) architectures, one can get a high classification accuracy on a wide variety of image datasets. However, these Deep Learning models have a very high computational complexity and so incur a high computational cost of running these algorithms as well as make it hard to interpret the results. In this paper, we present a shallow CNN architecture which gives the same classification accuracy as the VGG-16 and Resnet-50 models for thin blood smear RBC slide images for detection of malaria, while decreasing the computational run time by an order of magnitude. This can offer a significant advantage for commercial deployment of these algorithms, especially in poorer countries in Africa and some parts of the Indian subcontinent, where the menace of malaria is quite severe.
Dropout has been demonstrated as a simple and effective module to not only regularize the training process of deep neural networks, but also provide the uncertainty estimation for prediction. However, the quality of uncertainty estimation is highly dependent on the dropout probabilities. Most current models use the same dropout distributions across all data samples due to its simplicity. Despite the potential gains in the flexibility of modeling uncertainty, sample-dependent dropout, on the other hand, is less explored as it often encounters scalability issues or involves non-trivial model changes. In this paper, we propose contextual dropout with an efficient structural design as a simple and scalable sample-dependent dropout module, which can be applied to a wide range of models at the expense of only slightly increased memory and computational cost. We learn the dropout probabilities with a variational objective, compatible with both Bernoulli dropout and Gaussian dropout. We apply the contextual dropout module to various models with applications to image classification and visual question answering and demonstrate the scalability of the method with large-scale datasets, such as ImageNet and VQA 2.0. Our experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms baseline methods in terms of both accuracy and quality of uncertainty estimation.
We propose a new convolution neural network called HarDNet-MSEG for polyp segmentation. It achieves SOTA in both accuracy and inference speed on five popular datasets. For Kvasir-SEG, HarDNet-MSEG delivers 0.904 mean Dice running at 86.7 FPS on a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU. It consists of a backbone and a decoder. The backbone is a low memory traffic CNN called HarDNet68, which has been successfully applied to various CV tasks including image classification, object detection, multi-object tracking and semantic segmentation, etc. The decoder part is inspired by the Cascaded Partial Decoder, known for fast and accurate salient object detection. In Computer Vision, Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) aims at classifying unseen classes -- classes for which no matching training image exists. Most of ZSL works learn a cross-modal mapping between images and class labels for seen classes. However, the data distribution of seen and unseen classes might differ, causing a domain shift problem. Following this observation, transductive ZSL (T-ZSL) assumes that unseen classes and their associated images are known during training, but not their correspondence. As current T-ZSL approaches do not scale efficiently when the number of seen classes is high, we tackle this problem with a new model for T-ZSL based upon CycleGAN. Our model jointly (i) projects images on their seen class labels with a supervised objective and (ii) aligns unseen class labels and visual exemplars with adversarial and cycle-consistency objectives. We show the efficiency of our Cross-Modal CycleGAN model (CM-GAN) on the ImageNet T-ZSL task where we obtain state-of-the-art results. We further validate CM-GAN on a language grounding task, and on a new task that we propose: zero-shot sentence-to-image matching on MS COCO.
One of the time-consuming routine work for a radiologist is to discern anatomical structures from tomographic images. For assisting radiologists, this paper develops an automatic segmentation method for pelvic magnetic resonance (MR) images. The task has three major challenges 1) A pelvic organ can have various sizes and shapes depending on the axial image, which requires local contexts to segment correctly. 2) Different organs often have quite similar appearance in MR images, which requires global context to segment. 3) The number of available annotated images are very small to use the latest segmentation algorithms. To address the challenges, we propose a novel convolutional neural network called Attention-Pyramid network (APNet) that effectively exploits both local and global contexts, in addition to a data-augmentation technique that is particularly effective for MR images. In order to evaluate our method, we construct fine-grained (50 pelvic organs) MR image segmentation dataset, and experimentally confirm the superior performance of our techniques over the state-of-the-art image segmentation methods.
