Human-Object Interaction (HOI) detection is a core task for high-level image understanding. Recently, Detection Transformer (DETR)-based HOI detectors have become popular due to their superior performance and efficient structure. However, these approaches typically adopt fixed HOI queries for all testing images, which is vulnerable to the location change of objects in one specific image. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose to enhance DETR's robustness by mining hard-positive queries, which are forced to make correct predictions using partial visual cues. First, we explicitly compose hard-positive queries according to the ground-truth (GT) position of labeled human-object pairs for each training image. Specifically, we shift the GT bounding boxes of each labeled human-object pair so that the shifted boxes cover only a certain portion of the GT ones. We encode the coordinates of the shifted boxes for each labeled human-object pair into an HOI query. Second, we implicitly construct another set of hard-positive queries by masking the top scores in cross-attention maps of the decoder layers. The masked attention maps then only cover partial important cues for HOI predictions. Finally, an alternate strategy is proposed that efficiently combines both types of hard queries. In each iteration, both DETR's learnable queries and one selected type of hard-positive queries are adopted for loss computation. Experimental results show that our proposed approach can be widely applied to existing DETR-based HOI detectors. Moreover, we consistently achieve state-of-the-art performance on three benchmarks: HICO-DET, V-COCO, and HOI-A. Code is available at https://github.com/MuchHair/HQM.
Originally developed in fields such as robotics and autonomous driving with image-based navigation in mind, deep learning-based single-image depth estimation (SIDE) has found great interest in the wider image analysis community. Remote sensing is no exception, as the possibility to estimate height maps from single aerial or satellite imagery bears great potential in the context of topographic reconstruction. A few pioneering investigations have demonstrated the general feasibility of single image height prediction from optical remote sensing images and motivate further studies in that direction. With this paper, we present the first-ever demonstration of deep learning-based single image height prediction for the other important sensor modality in remote sensing: synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Besides the adaptation of a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture for SAR intensity images, we present a workflow for the generation of training data, and extensive experimental results for different SAR imaging modes and test sites. Since we put a particular emphasis on transferability, we are able to confirm that deep learning-based single-image height estimation is not only possible, but also transfers quite well to unseen data, even if acquired by different imaging modes and imaging parameters.
Backdoor attacks threaten Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Towards stealthiness, researchers propose clean-label backdoor attacks, which require the adversaries not to alter the labels of the poisoned training datasets. Clean-label settings make the attack more stealthy due to the correct image-label pairs, but some problems still exist: first, traditional methods for poisoning training data are ineffective; second, traditional triggers are not stealthy which are still perceptible. To solve these problems, we propose a two-phase and image-specific triggers generation method to enhance clean-label backdoor attacks. Our methods are (1) powerful: our triggers can both promote the two phases (i.e., the backdoor implantation and activation phase) in backdoor attacks simultaneously; (2) stealthy: our triggers are generated from each image. They are image-specific instead of fixed triggers. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach can achieve a fantastic attack success rate~(98.98%) with low poisoning rate~(5%), high stealthiness under many evaluation metrics and is resistant to backdoor defense methods.
Recent advances in high-fidelity semantic image editing heavily rely on the presumably disentangled latent spaces of the state-of-the-art generative models, such as StyleGAN. Specifically, recent works show that it is possible to achieve decent controllability of attributes in face images via linear shifts along with latent directions. Several recent methods address the discovery of such directions, implicitly assuming that the state-of-the-art GANs learn the latent spaces with inherently linearly separable attribute distributions and semantic vector arithmetic properties. In our work, we show that nonlinear latent code manipulations realized as flows of a trainable Neural ODE are beneficial for many practical non-face image domains with more complex non-textured factors of variation. In particular, we investigate a large number of datasets with known attributes and demonstrate that certain attribute manipulations are challenging to obtain with linear shifts only.
In industrial manufacturing processes, errors frequently occur at unpredictable times and in unknown manifestations. We tackle the problem of automatic defect detection without requiring any image samples of defective parts. Recent works model the distribution of defect-free image data, using either strong statistical priors or overly simplified data representations. In contrast, our approach handles fine-grained representations incorporating the global and local image context while flexibly estimating the density. To this end, we propose a novel fully convolutional cross-scale normalizing flow (CS-Flow) that jointly processes multiple feature maps of different scales. Using normalizing flows to assign meaningful likelihoods to input samples allows for efficient defect detection on image-level. Moreover, due to the preserved spatial arrangement the latent space of the normalizing flow is interpretable which enables to localize defective regions in the image. Our work sets a new state-of-the-art in image-level defect detection on the benchmark datasets Magnetic Tile Defects and MVTec AD showing a 100% AUROC on 4 out of 15 classes.
Recently, deep learning with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformers has shown encouraging results in fully supervised medical image segmentation. However, it is still challenging for them to achieve good performance with limited annotations for training. In this work, we present a very simple yet efficient framework for semi-supervised medical image segmentation by introducing the cross teaching between CNN and Transformer. Specifically, we simplify the classical deep co-training from consistency regularization to cross teaching, where the prediction of a network is used as the pseudo label to supervise the other network directly end-to-end. Considering the difference in learning paradigm between CNN and Transformer, we introduce the Cross Teaching between CNN and Transformer rather than just using CNNs. Experiments on a public benchmark show that our method outperforms eight existing semi-supervised learning methods just with a simpler framework. Notably, this work may be the first attempt to combine CNN and transformer for semi-supervised medical image segmentation and achieve promising results on a public benchmark. Remote sensing scene classification aims to assign a specific semantic label to a remote sensing image. Recently, convolutional neural networks have greatly improved the performance of remote sensing scene classification. However, some confused images may be easily recognized as the incorrect category, which generally degrade the performance. The differences between image pairs can be used to distinguish image categories. This paper proposed a pairwise comparison network, which contains two main steps: pairwise selection and pairwise representation. The proposed network first selects similar image pairs, and then represents the image pairs with pairwise representations. The self-representation is introduced to highlight the informative parts of each image itself, while the mutual-representation is proposed to capture the subtle differences between image pairs. Comprehensive experimental results on two challenging datasets (AID, NWPU-RESISC45) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network. Complex prediction models such as deep learning are the output from fitting machine learning, neural networks, or AI models to a set of training data. These are now standard tools in science. A key challenge with the current generation of models is that they are highly parameterized, which makes describing and interpreting the prediction strategies difficult. We use topological data analysis to transform these complex prediction models into pictures representing a topological view. The result is a map of the predictions that enables inspection. The methods scale up to large datasets across different domains and enable us to detect labeling errors in training data, understand generalization in image classification, and inspect predictions of likely pathogenic mutations in the BRCA1 gene.
The human prioritization of image regions can be modeled in a time invariant fashion with saliency maps or sequentially with scanpath models. However, while both types of models have steadily improved on several benchmarks and datasets, there is still a considerable gap in predicting human gaze. Here, we leverage two recent developments to reduce this gap: theoretical analyses establishing a principled framework for predicting the next gaze target and the empirical measurement of the human cost for gaze switches independently of image content. We introduce an algorithm in the framework of sequential decision making, which converts any static saliency map into a sequence of dynamic history-dependent value maps, which are recomputed after each gaze shift. These maps are based on 1) a saliency map provided by an arbitrary saliency model, 2) the recently measured human cost function quantifying preferences in magnitude and direction of eye movements, and 3) a sequential exploration bonus, which changes with each subsequent gaze shift. The parameters of the spatial extent and temporal decay of this exploration bonus are estimated from human gaze data. The relative contributions of these three components were optimized on the MIT1003 dataset for the NSS score and are sufficient to significantly outperform predictions of the next gaze target on NSS and AUC scores for five state of the art saliency models on three image data sets. Thus, we provide an implementation of human gaze preferences, which can be used to improve arbitrary saliency models' predictions of humans' next gaze targets.
Although fully autonomous mapping methods are becoming more and more common and reliable, still the human operator is regularly employed in many 3D surveying missions. In a number of underwater applications, divers or pilots of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are still considered irreplaceable, and tools for real-time visualization of the mapped scene are essential to support and maximize the navigation and surveying efforts. For underwater exploration, image mosaicing has proved to be a valid and effective approach to visualize large mapped areas, often employed in conjunction with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and ROVs. In this work, we propose the use of a modified image mosaicing algorithm that coupled with image-based real-time navigation and mapping algorithms provides two visual navigation aids. The first is a classic image mosaic, where the recorded and processed images are incrementally added, named 2D sequential image mosaicing (2DSIM). The second one geometrically transform the images so that they are projected as planar point clouds in the 3D space providing an incremental point cloud mosaicing, named 3D sequential image plane projection (3DSIP). In the paper, the implemented procedure is detailed, and experiments in different underwater scenarios presented and discussed. Technical considerations about computational efforts, frame rate capabilities and scalability to different and more compact architectures (i.e. embedded systems) is also provided.
