Solving segmentation tasks with topological priors proved to make fewer errors in fine-scale structures. In this work, we use topological priors both before and during the deep neural network training procedure. We compared the results of the two approaches with simple segmentation on various accuracy metrics and the Betti number error, which is directly related to topological correctness, and discovered that incorporating topological information into the classical UNet model performed significantly better. We conducted experiments on the ISBI EM segmentation dataset.
Image inpainting is an effective method to enhance distorted digital images. Different inpainting methods use the information of neighboring pixels to predict the value of missing pixels. Recently deep neural networks have been used to learn structural and semantic details of images for inpainting purposes. In this paper, we propose a network for image inpainting. This network, similar to U-Net, extracts various features from images, leading to better results. We improved the final results by replacing the damaged pixels with the recovered pixels of the output images. Our experimental results show that this method produces high-quality results compare to the traditional methods.
The quality of patient care associated with diagnostic radiology is proportionate to a physician workload. Segmentation is a fundamental limiting precursor to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Advances in Machine Learning (ML) aim to increase diagnostic efficiency to replace single application with generalized algorithms. In Unsupervised Anomaly Detection (UAD), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based Autoencoders (AEs) and Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) are considered as a de facto approach for reconstruction based anomaly segmentation. Looking for anomalous regions in medical images is one of the main applications that use anomaly segmentation. The restricted receptive field in CNNs limit the CNN to model the global context and hence if the anomalous regions cover parts of the image, the CNN-based AEs are not capable to bring semantic understanding of the image. On the other hand, Vision Transformers (ViTs) have emerged as a competitive alternative to CNNs. It relies on the self-attention mechanism that is capable to relate image patches to each other. To reconstruct a coherent and more realistic image, in this work, we investigate Transformer capabilities in building AEs for reconstruction based UAD task. We focus on anomaly segmentation for Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and present five Transformer-based models while enabling segmentation performance comparable or superior to State-of-The-Art (SOTA) models. High-quality face images are required to guarantee the stability and reliability of automatic face recognition (FR) systems in surveillance and security scenarios. However, a massive amount of face data is usually compressed before being analyzed due to limitations on transmission or storage. The compressed images may lose the powerful identity information, resulting in the performance degradation of the FR system. Herein, we make the first attempt to study just noticeable difference (JND) for the FR system, which can be defined as the maximum distortion that the FR system cannot notice. More specifically, we establish a JND dataset including 3530 original images and 137,670 compressed images generated by advanced reference encoding/decoding software based on the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard (VTM-15.0). Subsequently, we develop a novel JND prediction model to directly infer JND images for the FR system. In particular, in order to maximum redundancy removal without impairment of robust identity information, we apply the encoder with multiple feature extraction and attention-based feature decomposition modules to progressively decompose face features into two uncorrelated components, i.e., identity and residual features, via self-supervised learning. Then, the residual feature is fed into the decoder to generate the residual map. Finally, the predicted JND map is obtained by subtracting the residual map from the original image. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed model achieves higher accuracy of JND map prediction compared with the state-of-the-art JND models, and is capable of saving more bits while maintaining the performance of the FR system compared with VTM-15.0.
Deep learning-based algorithms have seen a massive popularity in different areas of remote sensing image analysis over the past decade. Recently, transformers-based architectures, originally introduced in natural language processing, have pervaded computer vision field where the self-attention mechanism has been utilized as a replacement to the popular convolution operator for capturing long-range dependencies. Inspired by recent advances in computer vision, remote sensing community has also witnessed an increased exploration of vision transformers for a diverse set of tasks. Although a number of surveys have focused on transformers in computer vision in general, to the best of our knowledge we are the first to present a systematic review of recent advances based on transformers in remote sensing. Our survey covers more than 60 recent transformers-based methods for different remote sensing problems in sub-areas of remote sensing: very high-resolution (VHR), hyperspectral (HSI) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. We conclude the survey by discussing different challenges and open issues of transformers in remote sensing. The adaption of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) aims to transfer a pre-trained GAN to a given domain with limited training data. In this paper, we focus on the one-shot case, which is more challenging and rarely explored in previous works. We consider that the adaptation from source domain to target domain can be decoupled into two parts: the transfer of global style like texture and color, and the emergence of new entities that do not belong to the source domain. While previous works mainly focus on the style transfer, we propose a novel and concise framework\footnote{\url{https://github.com/thevoidname/Generalized-One-shot-GAN-Adaption}} to address the \textit{generalized one-shot adaption} task for both style and entity transfer, in which a reference image and its binary entity mask are provided. Our core objective is to constrain the gap between the internal distributions of the reference and syntheses by sliced Wasserstein distance. To better achieve it, style fixation is used at first to roughly obtain the exemplary style, and an auxiliary network is introduced to the original generator to disentangle entity and style transfer. Besides, to realize cross-domain correspondence, we propose the variational Laplacian regularization to constrain the smoothness of the adapted generator. Both quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in various scenarios.
Making generative models 3D-aware bridges the 2D image space and the 3D physical world yet remains challenging. Recent attempts equip a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with a Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), which maps 3D coordinates to pixel values, as a 3D prior. However, the implicit function in NeRF has a very local receptive field, making the generator hard to become aware of the global structure. Meanwhile, NeRF is built on volume rendering which can be too costly to produce high-resolution results, increasing the optimization difficulty. To alleviate these two problems, we propose a novel framework, termed as VolumeGAN, for high-fidelity 3D-aware image synthesis, through explicitly learning a structural representation and a textural representation. We first learn a feature volume to represent the underlying structure, which is then converted to a feature field using a NeRF-like model. The feature field is further accumulated into a 2D feature map as the textural representation, followed by a neural renderer for appearance synthesis. Such a design enables independent control of the shape and the appearance. Extensive experiments on a wide range of datasets show that our approach achieves sufficiently higher image quality and better 3D control than the previous methods.
Modern computer vision has moved beyond the domain of internet photo collections and into the physical world, guiding camera-equipped robots and autonomous cars through unstructured environments. To enable these embodied agents to interact with real-world objects, cameras are increasingly being used as depth sensors, reconstructing the environment for a variety of downstream reasoning tasks. Machine-learning-aided depth perception, or depth estimation, predicts for each pixel in an image the distance to the imaged scene point. While impressive strides have been made in depth estimation, significant challenges remain: (1) ground truth depth labels are difficult and expensive to collect at scale, (2) camera information is typically assumed to be known, but is often unreliable and (3) restrictive camera assumptions are common, even though a great variety of camera types and lenses are used in practice. In this thesis, we focus on relaxing these assumptions, and describe contributions toward the ultimate goal of turning cameras into truly generic depth sensors.
Visual Entailment with natural language explanations aims to infer the relationship between a text-image pair and generate a sentence to explain the decision-making process. Previous methods rely mainly on a pre-trained vision-language model to perform the relation inference and a language model to generate the corresponding explanation. However, the pre-trained vision-language models mainly build token-level alignment between text and image yet ignore the high-level semantic alignment between the phrases (chunks) and visual contents, which is critical for vision-language reasoning. Moreover, the explanation generator based only on the encoded joint representation does not explicitly consider the critical decision-making points of relation inference. Thus the generated explanations are less faithful to visual-language reasoning. To mitigate these problems, we propose a unified Chunk-aware Alignment and Lexical Constraint based method, dubbed as CALeC. It contains a Chunk-aware Semantic Interactor (arr. CSI), a relation inferrer, and a Lexical Constraint-aware Generator (arr. LeCG). Specifically, CSI exploits the sentence structure inherent in language and various image regions to build chunk-aware semantic alignment. Relation inferrer uses an attention-based reasoning network to incorporate the token-level and chunk-level vision-language representations. LeCG utilizes lexical constraints to expressly incorporate the words or chunks focused by the relation inferrer into explanation generation, improving the faithfulness and informativeness of the explanations. We conduct extensive experiments on three datasets, and experimental results indicate that CALeC significantly outperforms other competitor models on inference accuracy and quality of generated explanations.
Over the years, 2D GANs have achieved great successes in photorealistic portrait generation. However, they lack 3D understanding in the generation process, thus they suffer from multi-view inconsistency problem. To alleviate the issue, many 3D-aware GANs have been proposed and shown notable results, but 3D GANs struggle with editing semantic attributes. The controllability and interpretability of 3D GANs have not been much explored. In this work, we propose two solutions to overcome these weaknesses of 2D GANs and 3D-aware GANs. We first introduce a novel 3D-aware GAN, SURF-GAN, which is capable of discovering semantic attributes during training and controlling them in an unsupervised manner. After that, we inject the prior of SURF-GAN into StyleGAN to obtain a high-fidelity 3D-controllable generator. Unlike existing latent-based methods allowing implicit pose control, the proposed 3D-controllable StyleGAN enables explicit pose control over portrait generation. This distillation allows direct compatibility between 3D control and many StyleGAN-based techniques (e.g., inversion and stylization), and also brings an advantage in terms of computational resources.
