Underwater automatic target recognition (UATR) has been a challenging research topic in ocean engineering. Although deep learning brings opportunities for target recognition on land and in the air, underwater target recognition techniques based on deep learning have lagged due to sensor performance and the size of trainable data. This letter proposed a framework for learning the visual representation of underwater acoustic imageries, which takes a transformer-based style transfer model as the main body. It could replace the low-level texture features of optical images with the visual features of underwater acoustic imageries while preserving their raw high-level semantic content. The proposed framework could fully use the rich optical image dataset to generate a pseudo-acoustic image dataset and use it as the initial sample to train the underwater acoustic target recognition model. The experiments select the dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) as the underwater acoustic data source and also take fish, the most common marine creature, as the research subject. Experimental results show that the proposed method could generate high-quality and high-fidelity pseudo-acoustic samples, achieve the purpose of acoustic data enhancement and provide support for the underwater acoustic-optical images domain transfer research.
Developing robots that are capable of many skills and generalization to unseen scenarios requires progress on two fronts: efficient collection of large and diverse datasets, and training of high-capacity policies on the collected data. While large datasets have propelled progress in other fields like computer vision and natural language processing, collecting data of comparable scale is particularly challenging for physical systems like robotics. In this work, we propose a framework to bridge this gap and better scale up robot learning, under the lens of multi-task, multi-scene robot manipulation in kitchen environments. Our framework, named CACTI, has four stages that separately handle data collection, data augmentation, visual representation learning, and imitation policy training. In the CACTI framework, we highlight the benefit of adapting state-of-the-art models for image generation as part of the augmentation stage, and the significant improvement of training efficiency by using pretrained out-of-domain visual representations at the compression stage. Experimentally, we demonstrate that 1) on a real robot setup, CACTI enables efficient training of a single policy capable of 10 manipulation tasks involving kitchen objects, and robust to varying layouts of distractor objects; 2) in a simulated kitchen environment, CACTI trains a single policy on 18 semantic tasks across up to 50 layout variations per task. The simulation task benchmark and augmented datasets in both real and simulated environments will be released to facilitate future research.
Surgery is the only viable treatment for cataract patients with visual acuity (VA) impairment. Clinically, to assess the necessity of cataract surgery, accurately predicting postoperative VA before surgery by analyzing multi-view optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is crucially needed. Unfortunately, due to complicated fundus conditions, determining postoperative VA remains difficult for medical experts. Deep learning methods for this problem were developed in recent years. Although effective, these methods still face several issues, such as not efficiently exploring potential relations between multi-view OCT images, neglecting the key role of clinical prior knowledge (e.g., preoperative VA value), and using only regression-based metrics which are lacking reference. In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-token Transformer Network (CTT-Net) for postoperative VA prediction by analyzing both the multi-view OCT images and preoperative VA. To effectively fuse multi-view features of OCT images, we develop cross-token attention that could restrict redundant/unnecessary attention flow. Further, we utilize the preoperative VA value to provide more information for postoperative VA prediction and facilitate fusion between views. Moreover, we design an auxiliary classification loss to improve model performance and assess VA recovery more sufficiently, avoiding the limitation by only using the regression metrics. To evaluate CTT-Net, we build a multi-view OCT image dataset collected from our collaborative hospital. In recent years, the rapid development of deep learning has brought great advancements to image and video segmentation methods based on neural networks. However, to unleash the full potential of such models, large numbers of high-quality annotated images are necessary for model training. Currently, many widely used open-source image segmentation software relies heavily on manual annotation which is tedious and time-consuming. In this work, we introduce EISeg, an Efficient Interactive SEGmentation annotation tool that can drastically improve image segmentation annotation efficiency, generating highly accurate segmentation masks with only a few clicks. We also provide various domain-specific models for remote sensing, medical imaging, industrial quality inspections, human segmentation, and temporal aware models for video segmentation. Recently, contrastive learning-based image translation methods have been proposed, which contrasts different spatial locations to enhance the spatial correspondence. However, the methods often ignore the diverse semantic relation within the images. To address this, here we propose a novel semantic relation consistency (SRC) regularization along with the decoupled contrastive learning, which utilize the diverse semantics by focusing on the heterogeneous semantics between the image patches of a single image. To further improve the performance, we present a hard negative mining by exploiting the semantic relation. We verified our method for three tasks: single-modal and multi-modal image translations, and GAN compression task for image translation. Experimental results confirmed the state-of-art performance of our method in all the three tasks.
Cloud detection is a pivotal satellite image pre-processing step that can be performed both on the ground and on board a satellite to tag useful images. In the latter case, it can help to reduce the amount of data to downlink by pruning the cloudy areas, or to make a satellite more autonomous through data-driven acquisition re-scheduling of the cloudy areas. We approach this important task with nnU-Nets, a self-reconfigurable framework able to perform meta-learning of a segmentation network over various datasets. Our experiments, performed over Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 multispectral images revealed that nnU-Nets deliver state-of-the-art cloud segmentation performance without any manual design. Our approach was ranked within the top 7% best solutions (across 847 participating teams) in the On Cloud N: Cloud Cover Detection Challenge, where we reached the Jaccard index of 0.882 over more than 10k unseen Sentinel-2 image patches (the winners obtained 0.897, whereas the baseline U-Net with the ResNet-34 backbone used as an encoder: 0.817, and the classic Sentinel-2 image thresholding: 0.652).
We present GlassesGAN, a novel image editing framework for custom design of glasses, that sets a new standard in terms of image quality, edit realism, and continuous multi-style edit capability. To facilitate the editing process with GlassesGAN, we propose a Targeted Subspace Modelling (TSM) procedure that, based on a novel mechanism for (synthetic) appearance discovery in the latent space of a pre-trained GAN generator, constructs an eyeglasses-specific (latent) subspace that the editing framework can utilize. To improve the reliability of our learned edits, we also introduce an appearance-constrained subspace initialization (SI) technique able to center the latent representation of a given input image in the well-defined part of the constructed subspace. We test GlassesGAN on three diverse datasets (CelebA-HQ, SiblingsDB-HQf, and MetFaces) and compare it against three state-of-the-art competitors, i.e., InterfaceGAN, GANSpace, and MaskGAN. Our experimental results show that GlassesGAN achieves photo-realistic, multi-style edits to eyeglasses while comparing favorably to its competitors. The source code is made freely available.
Causal learning has long concerned itself with the accurate recovery of underlying causal mechanisms. Such causal modelling enables better explanations of out-of-distribution data. Prior works on causal learning assume that the high-level causal variables are given. However, in machine learning tasks, one often operates on low-level data like image pixels or high-dimensional vectors. In such settings, the entire Structural Causal Model (SCM) -- structure, parameters, \textit{and} high-level causal variables -- is unobserved and needs to be learnt from low-level data. We treat this problem as Bayesian inference of the latent SCM, given low-level data. For linear Gaussian additive noise SCMs, we present a tractable approximate inference method which performs joint inference over the causal variables, structure and parameters of the latent SCM from random, known interventions. Experiments are performed on synthetic datasets and a causally generated image dataset to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. We also perform image generation from unseen interventions, thereby verifying out of distribution generalization for the proposed causal model.
Scene text removal aims to remove the text and fill the regions with perceptually plausible background information in natural images. It has attracted increasing attention due to its various applications in privacy protection, scene text retrieval, and text editing. With the development of deep learning, the previous methods have achieved significant improvements. However, most of the existing methods seem to ignore the large perceptive fields and global information. The pioneer method can get significant improvements by only changing training data from the cropped image to the full image. In this paper, we present a single-stage multi-scale network MSLKANet for scene text removal in full images. For obtaining large perceptive fields and global information, we propose multi-scale large kernel attention (MSLKA) to obtain long-range dependencies between the text regions and the backgrounds at various granularity levels. Furthermore, we combine the large kernel decomposition mechanism and atrous spatial pyramid pooling to build a large kernel spatial pyramid pooling (LKSPP), which can perceive more valid pixels in the spatial dimension while maintaining large receptive fields and low cost of computation. Extensive experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on both synthetic and real-world datasets and the effectiveness of the proposed components MSLKA and LKSPP.
Deep learning has achieved remarkable results in many computer vision tasks. Deep neural networks typically rely on large amounts of training data to avoid overfitting. However, labeled data for real-world applications may be limited. By improving the quantity and diversity of training data, data augmentation has become an inevitable part of deep learning model training with image data. As an effective way to improve the sufficiency and diversity of training data, data augmentation has become a necessary part of successful application of deep learning models on image data. In this paper, we systematically review different image data augmentation methods. We propose a taxonomy of reviewed methods and present the strengths and limitations of these methods. We also conduct extensive experiments with various data augmentation methods on three typical computer vision tasks, including semantic segmentation, image classification and object detection. Finally, we discuss current challenges faced by data augmentation and future research directions to put forward some useful research guidance.
