The transformation of features from 2D perspective space to 3D space is essential to multi-view 3D object detection. Recent approaches mainly focus on the design of view transformation, either pixel-wisely lifting perspective view features into 3D space with estimated depth or grid-wisely constructing BEV features via 3D projection, treating all pixels or grids equally. However, choosing what to transform is also important but has rarely been discussed before. The pixels of a moving car are more informative than the pixels of the sky. To fully utilize the information contained in images, the view transformation should be able to adapt to different image regions according to their contents. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named FrustumFormer, which pays more attention to the features in instance regions via adaptive instance-aware resampling. Specifically, the model obtains instance frustums on the bird's eye view by leveraging image view object proposals. An adaptive occupancy mask within the instance frustum is learned to refine the instance location. Moreover, the temporal frustum intersection could further reduce the localization uncertainty of objects. Comprehensive experiments on the nuScenes dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of FrustumFormer, and we achieve a new state-of-the-art performance on the benchmark. Codes will be released soon.
U-10Zr-based nuclear fuel is pursued as a primary candidate for next-generation sodium-cooled fast reactors. However, more advanced characterization and analysis are needed to form a fundamental understating of the fuel performance, and make U-10Zr fuel qualify for commercial use. The movement of lanthanides across the fuel section from the hot fuel center to the cool cladding surface is one of the key factors to affect fuel performance. In the advanced annular U-10Zr fuel, the lanthanides present as fission gas bubbles. Due to a lack of annotated data, existing literature utilized a multiple-threshold method to separate the bubbles and calculate bubble statistics on an annular fuel. However, the multiple-threshold method cannot achieve robust performance on images with different qualities and contrasts, and cannot distinguish different bubbles. This paper proposes a hybrid framework for efficient bubble segmentation. We develop a bubble annotation tool and generate the first fission gas bubble dataset with more than 3000 bubbles from 24 images. A multi-task deep learning network integrating U-Net and ResNet is designed to accomplish instance-level bubble segmentation. Combining the segmentation results and image processing step achieves the best recall ratio of more than 90% with very limited annotated data. Our model shows outstanding improvement by comparing the previously proposed thresholding method. The proposed method has promising to generate a more accurate quantitative analysis of fission gas bubbles on U-10Zr annular fuels. The results will contribute to identifying the bubbles with lanthanides and finally build the relationship between the thermal gradation and lanthanides movements of U-10Zr annular fuels. Mover, the deep learning model is applicable to other similar material micro-structure segmentation tasks.
Text-to-image generation aims at generating realistic images which are semantically consistent with the given text. Previous works mainly adopt the multi-stage architecture by stacking generator-discriminator pairs to engage multiple adversarial training, where the text semantics used to provide generation guidance remain static across all stages. This work argues that text features at each stage should be adaptively re-composed conditioned on the status of the historical stage (i.e., historical stage's text and image features) to provide diversified and accurate semantic guidance during the coarse-to-fine generation process. We thereby propose a novel Dynamical Semantic Evolution GAN (DSE-GAN) to re-compose each stage's text features under a novel single adversarial multi-stage architecture. Specifically, we design (1) Dynamic Semantic Evolution (DSE) module, which first aggregates historical image features to summarize the generative feedback, and then dynamically selects words required to be re-composed at each stage as well as re-composed them by dynamically enhancing or suppressing different granularity subspace's semantics. (2) Single Adversarial Multi-stage Architecture (SAMA), which extends the previous structure by eliminating complicated multiple adversarial training requirements and therefore allows more stages of text-image interactions, and finally facilitates the DSE module. We conduct comprehensive experiments and show that DSE-GAN achieves 7.48\% and 37.8\% relative FID improvement on two widely used benchmarks, i.e., CUB-200 and MSCOCO, respectively.
The goal of continual learning is to provide intelligent agents that are capable of learning continually a sequence of tasks using the knowledge obtained from previous tasks while performing well on prior tasks. However, a key challenge in this continual learning paradigm is catastrophic forgetting, namely adapting a model to new tasks often leads to severe performance degradation on prior tasks. Current memory-based approaches show their success in alleviating the catastrophic forgetting problem by replaying examples from past tasks when new tasks are learned. However, these methods are infeasible to transfer the structural knowledge from previous tasks i.e., similarities or dissimilarities between different instances. Furthermore, the learning bias between the current and prior tasks is also an urgent problem that should be solved. In this work, we propose a new method, named Online Continual Learning via the Knowledge Invariant and Spread-out Properties (OCLKISP), in which we constrain the evolution of the embedding features via Knowledge Invariant and Spread-out Properties (KISP). Thus, we can further transfer the inter-instance structural knowledge of previous tasks while alleviating the forgetting due to the learning bias. We empirically evaluate our proposed method on four popular benchmarks for continual learning: Split CIFAR 100, Split SVHN, Split CUB200 and Split Tiny-Image-Net. The experimental results show the efficacy of our proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art continual learning algorithms.
Since convolutional neural networks perform well in learning generalizable image priors from large-scale data, these models have been widely used in image denoising tasks. However, the computational complexity increases dramatically as well on complex model. In this paper, We propose a novel lightweight Complementary Attention Module, which includes a density module and a sparse module, which can cooperatively mine dense and sparse features for feature complementary learning to build an efficient lightweight architecture. Moreover, to reduce the loss of details caused by denoising, this paper constructs a gradient-based structure-preserving branch. We utilize gradient-based branches to obtain additional structural priors for denoising, and make the model pay more attention to image geometric details through gradient loss optimization.Based on the above, we propose an efficiently Unet structured network with dual branch, the visual results show that can effectively preserve the structural details of the original image, we evaluate benchmarks including SIDD and DND, where SCANet achieves state-of-the-art performance in PSNR and SSIM while significantly reducing computational cost.
Image retrieval systems help users to browse and search among extensive images in real-time. With the rise of cloud computing, retrieval tasks are usually outsourced to cloud servers. However, the cloud scenario brings a daunting challenge of privacy protection as cloud servers cannot be fully trusted. To this end, image-encryption-based privacy-preserving image retrieval schemes have been developed, which first extract features from cipher-images, and then build retrieval models based on these features. Yet, most existing approaches extract shallow features and design trivial retrieval models, resulting in insufficient expressiveness for the cipher-images. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm named Encrypted Vision Transformer (EViT), which advances the discriminative representations capability of cipher-images. First, in order to capture comprehensive ruled information, we extract multi-level local length sequence and global Huffman-code frequency features from the cipher-images which are encrypted by stream cipher during JPEG compression process. Second, we design the Vision Transformer-based retrieval model to couple with the multi-level features, and propose two adaptive data augmentation methods to improve representation power of the retrieval model. Our proposal can be easily adapted to unsupervised and supervised settings via self-supervised contrastive learning manner. Extensive experiments reveal that EViT achieves both excellent encryption and retrieval performance, outperforming current schemes in terms of retrieval accuracy by large margins while protecting image privacy effectively. Conventional cameras capture image irradiance on a sensor and convert it to RGB images using an image signal processor (ISP). The images can then be used for photography or visual computing tasks in a variety of applications, such as public safety surveillance and autonomous driving. One can argue that since RAW images contain all the captured information, the conversion of RAW to RGB using an ISP is not necessary for visual computing. In this paper, we propose a novel $\rho$-Vision framework to perform high-level semantic understanding and low-level compression using RAW images without the ISP subsystem used for decades. Considering the scarcity of available RAW image datasets, we first develop an unpaired CycleR2R network based on unsupervised CycleGAN to train modular unrolled ISP and inverse ISP (invISP) models using unpaired RAW and RGB images. We can then flexibly generate simulated RAW images (simRAW) using any existing RGB image dataset and finetune different models originally trained for the RGB domain to process real-world camera RAW images. We demonstrate object detection and image compression capabilities in RAW-domain using RAW-domain YOLOv3 and RAW image compressor (RIC) on snapshots from various cameras. Quantitative results reveal that RAW-domain task inference provides better detection accuracy and compression compared to RGB-domain processing. Furthermore, the proposed \r{ho}-Vision generalizes across various camera sensors and different task-specific models. Additional advantages of the proposed $\rho$-Vision that eliminates the ISP are the potential reductions in computations and processing times.
In this paper, we propose a novel explanatory framework aimed to provide a better understanding of how face recognition models perform as the underlying data characteristics (protected attributes: gender, ethnicity, age; non-protected attributes: facial hair, makeup, accessories, face orientation and occlusion, image distortion, emotions) on which they are tested change. With our framework, we evaluate ten state-of-the-art face recognition models, comparing their fairness in terms of security and usability on two data sets, involving six groups based on gender and ethnicity. We then analyze the impact of image characteristics on models performance. Our results show that trends appearing in a single-attribute analysis disappear or reverse when multi-attribute groups are considered, and that performance disparities are also related to non-protected attributes. Existing approaches for 3D garment reconstruction either assume a predefined template for the garment geometry (restricting them to fixed clothing styles) or yield vertex colored meshes (lacking high-frequency textural details). Our novel framework co-learns geometric and semantic information of garment surface from the input monocular image for template-free textured 3D garment digitization. More specifically, we propose to extend PeeledHuman representation to predict the pixel-aligned, layered depth and semantic maps to extract 3D garments. The layered representation is further exploited to UV parametrize the arbitrary surface of the extracted garment without any human intervention to form a UV atlas. The texture is then imparted on the UV atlas in a hybrid fashion by first projecting pixels from the input image to UV space for the visible region, followed by inpainting the occluded regions. Thus, we are able to digitize arbitrarily loose clothing styles while retaining high-frequency textural details from a monocular image. We achieve high-fidelity 3D garment reconstruction results on three publicly available datasets and generalization on internet images.
Recent GAN inversion models focus on preserving image-specific details through various methods, e.g., generator tuning or feature mixing. While those are helpful for preserving details compared to a naiive low-rate latent inversion, they still fail to maintain high-frequency features precisely. In this paper, we point out that the existing GAN inversion models have inherent limitations in both structural and training aspects, which preclude the delicate reconstruction of high-frequency features. Especially, we prove that the widely-used loss term in GAN inversion, i.e., L2, is biased to reconstruct low-frequency features mainly. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel GAN inversion model, coined WaGI, which enables to handle high-frequency features explicitly, by using a novel wavelet-based loss term and a newly proposed wavelet fusion scheme. To the best of our knowledge, WaGI is the first attempt to interpret GAN inversion in the frequency domain. We demonstrate that WaGI shows outstanding results on both inversion and editing, compared to the existing state-of-the-art GAN inversion models. Especially, WaGI robustly preserves high-frequency features of images even in the editing scenario. We will release our code with the pre-trained model after the review.
