Seeing-in-the-dark is one of the most important and challenging computer vision tasks due to its wide applications and extreme complexities of in-the-wild scenarios. Existing arts can be mainly divided into two threads: 1) RGB-dependent methods restore information using degraded RGB inputs only (\eg, low-light enhancement), 2) RGB-independent methods translate images captured under auxiliary near-infrared (NIR) illuminants into RGB domain (\eg, NIR2RGB translation). The latter is very attractive since it works in complete darkness and the illuminants are visually friendly to naked eyes, but tends to be unstable due to its intrinsic ambiguities. In this paper, we try to robustify NIR2RGB translation by designing the optimal spectrum of auxiliary illumination in the wide-band VIS-NIR range, while keeping visual friendliness. Our core idea is to quantify the visibility constraint implied by the human vision system and incorporate it into the design pipeline. By modeling the formation process of images in the VIS-NIR range, the optimal multiplexing of a wide range of LEDs is automatically designed in a fully differentiable manner, within the feasible region defined by the visibility constraint. We also collect a substantially expanded VIS-NIR hyperspectral image dataset for experiments by using a customized 50-band filter wheel. Deepfake techniques have been used maliciously, resulting in strong research interests in developing Deepfake detection methods. Deepfake often manipulates the video content by tampering with some facial parts. However, this manipulation usually breaks the consistency among facial parts, e.g., Deepfake may change smiling lips to upset, but the eyes are still smiling. Existing works propose to spot inconsistency on some specific facial parts (e.g., lips), but they may perform poorly if new Deepfake techniques focus on the specific facial parts used by the detector. Thus, this paper proposes a new Deepfake detection model, DeepfakeMAE, which can utilize the consistencies among all facial parts. Specifically, given a real face image, we first pretrain a masked autoencoder to learn facial part consistency by randomly masking some facial parts and reconstructing missing areas based on the remaining facial parts. Furthermore, to maximize the discrepancy between real and fake videos, we propose a novel model with dual networks that utilize the pretrained encoder and decoder, respectively. 1) The pretrained encoder is finetuned for capturing the overall information of the given video. 2) The pretrained decoder is utilized for distinguishing real and fake videos based on the motivation that DeepfakeMAE's reconstruction should be more similar to a real face image than a fake one. Our extensive experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate that DeepfakeMAE is highly effective and especially outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method by 3.1% AUC on average in cross-dataset detection.
Recent advances in training vision-language models have demonstrated unprecedented robustness and transfer learning effectiveness; however, standard computer vision datasets are image-only, and therefore not well adapted to such training methods. Our paper introduces a simple methodology for adapting any fine-grained image classification dataset for distributed vision-language pretraining. We implement this methodology on the challenging iNaturalist-2021 dataset, comprised of approximately 2.7 million images of macro-organisms across 10,000 classes, and achieve a new state-of-the art model in terms of zero-shot classification accuracy. Somewhat surprisingly, our model (trained using a new method called locked-image text tuning) uses a pre-trained, frozen vision representation, proving that language alignment alone can attain strong transfer learning performance, even on fractious, long-tailed datasets. Our approach opens the door for utilizing high quality vision-language pretrained models in agriculturally relevant applications involving species detection.
Grounding 3D object affordance seeks to locate objects' ''action possibilities'' regions in the 3D space, which serves as a link between perception and operation for embodied agents. Existing studies primarily focus on connecting visual affordances with geometry structures, e.g. relying on annotations to declare interactive regions of interest on the object and establishing a mapping between the regions and affordances. However, the essence of learning object affordance is to understand how to use it, and the manner that detaches interactions is limited in generalization. Normally, humans possess the ability to perceive object affordances in the physical world through demonstration images or videos. Motivated by this, we introduce a novel task setting: grounding 3D object affordance from 2D interactions in images, which faces the challenge of anticipating affordance through interactions of different sources. To address this problem, we devise a novel Interaction-driven 3D Affordance Grounding Network (IAG), which aligns the region feature of objects from different sources and models the interactive contexts for 3D object affordance grounding. Besides, we collect a Point-Image Affordance Dataset (PIAD) to support the proposed task. Comprehensive experiments on PIAD demonstrate the reliability of the proposed task and the superiority of our method. The project is available at https://github.com/yyvhang/IAGNet.
Development of defenses against physical world attacks such as adversarial patches is gaining traction within the research community. We contribute to the field of adversarial patch detection by introducing an uncertainty-based adversarial patch localizer which localizes adversarial patch on an image, permitting post-processing patch-avoidance or patch-reconstruction. We quantify our prediction uncertainties with the development of \textit{\textbf{D}etection of \textbf{U}ncertainties in the \textbf{E}xceedance of \textbf{T}hreshold} (DUET) algorithm. This algorithm provides a framework to ascertain confidence in the adversarial patch localization, which is essential for safety-sensitive applications such as self-driving cars and medical imaging. We conducted experiments on localizing adversarial patches and found our proposed DUET model outperforms baseline models. We then conduct further analyses on our choice of model priors and the adoption of Bayesian Neural Networks in different layers within our model architecture. We found that isometric gaussian priors in Bayesian Neural Networks are suitable for patch localization tasks and the presence of Bayesian layers in the earlier neural network blocks facilitates top-end localization performance, while Bayesian layers added in the later neural network blocks contribute to better model generalization. We then propose two different well-performing models to tackle different use cases.
The past few years have witnessed the prevalence of self-supervised representation learning within the language and 2D vision communities. However, such advancements have not been fully migrated to the community of 3D point cloud learning. Different from previous pre-training pipelines for 3D point clouds that generally fall into the scope of either generative modeling or contrastive learning, in this paper, we investigate a translative pre-training paradigm, namely PointVST, driven by a novel self-supervised pretext task of cross-modal translation from an input 3D object point cloud to its diverse forms of 2D rendered images (e.g., silhouette, depth, contour). Specifically, we begin with deducing view-conditioned point-wise embeddings via the insertion of the viewpoint indicator, and then adaptively aggregate a view-specific global codeword, which is further fed into the subsequent 2D convolutional translation heads for image generation. We conduct extensive experiments on common task scenarios of 3D shape analysis, where our PointVST shows consistent and prominent performance superiority over current state-of-the-art methods under diverse evaluation protocols. Guided depth map super-resolution (GDSR), which aims to reconstruct a high-resolution (HR) depth map from a low-resolution (LR) observation with the help of a paired HR color image, is a longstanding and fundamental problem, it has attracted considerable attention from computer vision and image processing communities. A myriad of novel and effective approaches have been proposed recently, especially with powerful deep learning techniques. This survey is an effort to present a comprehensive survey of recent progress in GDSR. We start by summarizing the problem of GDSR and explaining why it is challenging. Next, we introduce some commonly used datasets and image quality assessment methods. In addition, we roughly classify existing GDSR methods into three categories, i.e., filtering-based methods, prior-based methods, and learning-based methods. In each category, we introduce the general description of the published algorithms and design principles, summarize the representative methods, and discuss their highlights and limitations. Moreover, the depth related applications are introduced. Furthermore, we conduct experiments to evaluate the performance of some representative methods based on unified experimental configurations, so as to offer a systematic and fair performance evaluation to readers. Finally, we conclude this survey with possible directions and open problems for further research. Recent advances in computer vision have shown promising results in image generation. Diffusion probabilistic models in particular have generated realistic images from textual input, as demonstrated by DALL-E 2, Imagen and Stable Diffusion. However, their use in medicine, where image data typically comprises three-dimensional volumes, has not been systematically evaluated. Synthetic images may play a crucial role in privacy preserving artificial intelligence and can also be used to augment small datasets. Here we show that diffusion probabilistic models can synthesize high quality medical imaging data, which we show for Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) images. We provide quantitative measurements of their performance through a reader study with two medical experts who rated the quality of the synthesized images in three categories: Realistic image appearance, anatomical correctness and consistency between slices. Furthermore, we demonstrate that synthetic images can be used in a self-supervised pre-training and improve the performance of breast segmentation models when data is scarce (dice score 0.91 vs. 0.95 without vs. with synthetic data).
Semantic editing of images is the fundamental goal of computer vision. Although deep learning methods, such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), are capable of producing high-quality images, they often do not have an inherent way of editing generated images semantically. Recent studies have investigated a way of manipulating the latent variable to determine the images to be generated. However, methods that assume linear semantic arithmetic have certain limitations in terms of the quality of image editing, whereas methods that discover nonlinear semantic pathways provide non-commutative editing, which is inconsistent when applied in different orders. This study proposes a novel method called deep curvilinear editing (DeCurvEd) to determine semantic commuting vector fields on the latent space. We theoretically demonstrate that owing to commutativity, the editing of multiple attributes depends only on the quantities and not on the order. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that compared to previous methods, the nonlinear and commutative nature of DeCurvEd facilitates the disentanglement of image attributes and provides higher-quality editing.
Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) are nowadays used to represent multimedia signals across various real-life applications, including image super-resolution, image compression, or 3D rendering. Existing methods that leverage INRs are predominantly focused on visual data, as their application to other modalities, such as audio, is nontrivial due to the inductive biases present in architectural attributes of image-based INR models. To address this limitation, we introduce HyperSound, the first meta-learning approach to produce INRs for audio samples that leverages hypernetworks to generalize beyond samples observed in training. Our approach reconstructs audio samples with quality comparable to other state-of-the-art models and provides a viable alternative to contemporary sound representations used in deep neural networks for audio processing, such as spectrograms.
