We propose a new self-supervised method for predicting 3D human body pose from a single image. The prediction network is trained from a dataset of unlabelled images depicting people in typical poses and a set of unpaired 2D poses. By minimising the need for annotated data, the method has the potential for rapid application to pose estimation of other articulated structures (e.g. animals). The self-supervision comes from an earlier idea exploiting consistency between predicted pose under 3D rotation. Our method is a substantial advance on state-of-the-art self-supervised methods in training a mapping directly from images, without limb articulation constraints or any 3D empirical pose prior. We compare performance with state-of-the-art self-supervised methods using benchmark datasets that provide images and ground-truth 3D pose (Human3.6M, MPI-INF-3DHP). Despite the reduced requirement for annotated data, we show that the method outperforms on Human3.6M and matches performance on MPI-INF-3DHP. Qualitative results on a dataset of human hands show the potential for rapidly learning to predict 3D pose for articulated structures other than the human body.
The objective of Audio-Visual Segmentation (AVS) is to locate sounding objects within visual scenes by accurately predicting pixelwise segmentation masks. In this paper, we present the following contributions: (i), we propose a scalable and annotation-free pipeline for generating artificial data for the AVS task. We leverage existing image segmentation and audio datasets to draw links between category labels, image-mask pairs, and audio samples, which allows us to easily compose (image, audio, mask) triplets for training AVS models; (ii), we introduce a novel Audio-Aware Transformer (AuTR) architecture that features an audio-aware query-based transformer decoder. This architecture enables the model to search for sounding objects with the guidance of audio signals, resulting in more accurate segmentation; (iii), we present extensive experiments conducted on both synthetic and real datasets, which demonstrate the effectiveness of training AVS models with synthetic data generated by our proposed pipeline. Additionally, our proposed AuTR architecture exhibits superior performance and strong generalization ability on public benchmarks. The project page is https://jinxiang-liu.github.io/anno-free-AVS/.
Local Surrogate models have increased in popularity for use in explaining complex black-box models for diverse types of data, including text, tabular, and image. One particular algorithm, LIME, continues to see use within the field of machine learning due to its inherently interpretable explanations and model-agnostic behavior. But despite continued use, questions about the stability of LIME persist. Stability, a property where similar instances result in similar explanations, has been shown to be lacking in explanations generated for tabular and image data, both of which are continuous domains. Here we explore the stability of LIME's explanations generated on textual data and confirm the trend of instability shown in previous research for other data types.
We propose attribute-aware multimodal entity linking, where the input is a mention described with a text and image, and the goal is to predict the corresponding target entity from a multimodal knowledge base (KB) where each entity is also described with a text description, a visual image and a set of attributes and values. To support this research, we construct AMELI, a large-scale dataset consisting of 18,472 reviews and 35,598 products. To establish baseline performance on AMELI, we experiment with the current state-of-the-art multimodal entity linking approaches and our enhanced attribute-aware model and demonstrate the importance of incorporating the attribute information into the entity linking process. To be best of our knowledge, we are the first to build benchmark dataset and solutions for the attribute-aware multimodal entity linking task. Datasets and codes will be made publicly available.
Given an audio clip and a reference face image, the goal of the talking head generation is to generate a high-fidelity talking head video. Although some audio-driven methods of generating talking head videos have made some achievements in the past, most of them only focused on lip and audio synchronization and lack the ability to reproduce the facial expressions of the target person. To this end, we propose a talking head generation model consisting of a Memory-Sharing Emotion Feature extractor (MSEF) and an Attention-Augmented Translator based on U-net (AATU). Firstly, MSEF can extract implicit emotional auxiliary features from audio to estimate more accurate emotional face landmarks.~Secondly, AATU acts as a translator between the estimated landmarks and the photo-realistic video frames. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments have shown the superiority of the proposed method to the previous works. Codes will be made publicly available.
Recently, diffusion models have demonstrated a remarkable ability to solve inverse problems in an unsupervised manner. Existing methods mainly focus on modifying the posterior sampling process while neglecting the potential of the forward process. In this work, we propose Shortcut Sampling for Diffusion (SSD), a novel pipeline for solving inverse problems. Instead of initiating from random noise, the key concept of SSD is to find the "Embryo", a transitional state that bridges the measurement image y and the restored image x. By utilizing the "shortcut" path of "input-Embryo-output", SSD can achieve precise and fast restoration. To obtain the Embryo in the forward process, We propose Distortion Adaptive Inversion (DA Inversion). Moreover, we apply back projection and attention injection as additional consistency constraints during the generation process. Experimentally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of SSD on several representative tasks, including super-resolution, deblurring, and colorization. Compared to state-of-the-art zero-shot methods, our method achieves competitive results with only 30 NFEs. Moreover, SSD with 100 NFEs can outperform state-of-the-art zero-shot methods in certain tasks.
We present an image dehazing algorithm with high quality, wide application, and no data training or prior needed. We analyze the defects of the original dehazing model, and propose a new and reliable dehazing reconstruction and dehazing model based on the combination of optical scattering model and computer graphics lighting rendering model. Based on the new haze model and the images obtained by the cameras, we can reconstruct the three-dimensional space, accurately calculate the objects and haze in the space, and use the transparency relationship of haze to perform accurate haze removal. To obtain a 3D simulation dataset we used the Unreal 5 computer graphics rendering engine. In order to obtain real shot data in different scenes, we used fog generators, array cameras, mobile phones, underwater cameras and drones to obtain haze data. We use formula derivation, simulation data set and real shot data set result experimental results to prove the feasibility of the new method. Compared with various other methods, we are far ahead in terms of calculation indicators (4 dB higher quality average scene), color remains more natural, and the algorithm is more robust in different scenarios and best in the subjective perception.
Object detection is a fundamental task in computer vision, which has been greatly progressed through developing large and intricate deep learning models. However, the lack of transparency is a big challenge that may not allow the widespread adoption of these models. Explainable artificial intelligence is a field of research where methods are developed to help users understand the behavior, decision logics, and vulnerabilities of AI-based systems. Black-box explanation refers to explaining decisions of an AI system without having access to its internals. In this paper, we design and implement a black-box explanation method named Black-box Object Detection Explanation by Masking (BODEM) through adopting a new masking approach for AI-based object detection systems. We propose local and distant masking to generate multiple versions of an input image. Local masks are used to disturb pixels within a target object to figure out how the object detector reacts to these changes, while distant masks are used to assess how the detection model's decisions are affected by disturbing pixels outside the object. A saliency map is then created by estimating the importance of pixels through measuring the difference between the detection output before and after masking. Finally, a heatmap is created that visualizes how important pixels within the input image are to the detected objects. The experimentations on various object detection datasets and models showed that BODEM can be effectively used to explain the behavior of object detectors and reveal their vulnerabilities. This makes BODEM suitable for explaining and validating AI based object detection systems in black-box software testing scenarios. Furthermore, we conducted data augmentation experiments that showed local masks produced by BODEM can be used for further training the object detectors and improve their detection accuracy and robustness.
Image manipulation under the guidance of textual descriptions has recently received a broad range of attention. In this study, we focus on the regional editing of images with the guidance of given text prompts. Different from current mask-based image editing methods, we propose a novel region-aware diffusion model (RDM) for entity-level image editing, which could automatically locate the region of interest and replace it following given text prompts. To strike a balance between image fidelity and inference speed, we design the intensive diffusion pipeline by combing latent space diffusion and enhanced directional guidance. In addition, to preserve image content in non-edited regions, we introduce regional-aware entity editing to modify the region of interest and preserve the out-of-interest region. We validate the proposed RDM beyond the baseline methods through extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments. The results show that RDM outperforms the previous approaches in terms of visual quality, overall harmonization, non-editing region content preservation, and text-image semantic consistency. Masked autoencoder (MAE), a simple and effective self-supervised learning framework based on the reconstruction of masked image regions, has recently achieved prominent success in a variety of vision tasks. Despite the emergence of intriguing empirical observations on MAE, a theoretically principled understanding is still lacking. In this work, we formally characterize and justify existing empirical insights and provide theoretical guarantees of MAE. We formulate the underlying data-generating process as a hierarchical latent variable model and show that under reasonable assumptions, MAE provably identifies a set of latent variables in the hierarchical model, explaining why MAE can extract high-level information from pixels. Further, we show how key hyperparameters in MAE (the masking ratio and the patch size) determine which true latent variables to be recovered, therefore influencing the level of semantic information in the representation. Specifically, extremely large or small masking ratios inevitably lead to low-level representations. Our theory offers coherent explanations of existing empirical observations and provides insights for potential empirical improvements and fundamental limitations of the masking-reconstruction paradigm. We conduct extensive experiments to validate our theoretical insights.
