Training visual reinforcement learning (RL) models in offline datasets is challenging due to overfitting issues in representation learning and overestimation problems in value function. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning method called Collaborative World Models (CoWorld) to improve the performance of visual RL under offline conditions. The core idea is to use an easy-to-interact, off-the-shelf simulator to train an auxiliary RL model as the online "test bed" for the offline policy learned in the target domain, which provides a flexible constraint for the value function -- Intuitively, we want to mitigate the overestimation problem of value functions outside the offline data distribution without impeding the exploration of actions with potential advantages. Specifically, CoWorld performs domain-collaborative representation learning to bridge the gap between online and offline hidden state distributions. Furthermore, it performs domain-collaborative behavior learning that enables the source RL agent to provide target-aware value estimation, allowing for effective offline policy regularization. Experiments show that CoWorld significantly outperforms existing methods in offline visual control tasks in DeepMind Control and Meta-World.
Large language models (LLMs) power a new generation of interactive AI applications exemplified by ChatGPT. The interactive nature of these applications demand low job completion time (JCT) for model inference. Existing LLM serving systems use run-to-completion processing for inference jobs, which suffers from head-of-line blocking and long JCT. We present FastServe, a distributed inference serving system for LLMs. FastServe exploits the autoregressive pattern of LLM inference to enable preemption at the granularity of each output token. FastServe uses preemptive scheduling to minimize JCT with a novel skip-join Multi-Level Feedback Queue scheduler. Based on the new semi information-agnostic setting of LLM inference, the scheduler leverages the input length information to assign an appropriate initial queue for each arrival job to join. The higher priority queues than the joined queue are skipped to reduce demotions. We design an efficient GPU memory management mechanism that proactively offloads and uploads intermediate states between GPU memory and host memory for LLM inference. We build a system prototype of FastServe based on NVIDIA FasterTransformer. Experimental results show that compared to the state-of-the-art solution Orca, FastServe improves the average and tail JCT by up to 5.1$\times$ and 6.4$\times$, respectively.
Image compression techniques typically focus on compressing rectangular images for human consumption, however, resulting in transmitting redundant content for downstream applications. To overcome this limitation, some previous works propose to semantically structure the bitstream, which can meet specific application requirements by selective transmission and reconstruction. Nevertheless, they divide the input image into multiple rectangular regions according to semantics and ignore avoiding information interaction among them, causing waste of bitrate and distorted reconstruction of region boundaries. In this paper, we propose to decouple an image into multiple groups with irregular shapes based on a customized group mask and compress them independently. Our group mask describes the image at a finer granularity, enabling significant bitrate saving by reducing the transmission of redundant content. Moreover, to ensure the fidelity of selective reconstruction, this paper proposes the concept of group-independent transform that maintain the independence among distinct groups. And we instantiate it by the proposed Group-Independent Swin-Block (GI Swin-Block). Experimental results demonstrate that our framework structures the bitstream with negligible cost, and exhibits superior performance on both visual quality and intelligent task supporting.
Image coding for machines (ICM) aims to compress images to support downstream AI analysis instead of human perception. For ICM, developing a unified codec to reduce information redundancy while empowering the compressed features to support various vision tasks is very important, which inevitably faces two core challenges: 1) How should the compression strategy be adjusted based on the downstream tasks? 2) How to well adapt the compressed features to different downstream tasks? Inspired by recent advances in transferring large-scale pre-trained models to downstream tasks via prompting, in this work, we explore a new ICM framework, termed Prompt-ICM. To address both challenges by carefully learning task-driven prompts to coordinate well the compression process and downstream analysis. Specifically, our method is composed of two core designs: a) compression prompts, which are implemented as importance maps predicted by an information selector, and used to achieve different content-weighted bit allocations during compression according to different downstream tasks; b) task-adaptive prompts, which are instantiated as a few learnable parameters specifically for tuning compressed features for the specific intelligent task. Extensive experiments demonstrate that with a single feature codec and a few extra parameters, our proposed framework could efficiently support different kinds of intelligent tasks with much higher coding efficiency.
Focused plenoptic cameras can record spatial and angular information of the light field (LF) simultaneously with higher spatial resolution relative to traditional plenoptic cameras, which facilitate various applications in computer vision. However, the existing plenoptic image compression methods present ineffectiveness to the captured images due to the complex micro-textures generated by the microlens relay imaging and long-distance correlations among the microimages. In this paper, a lossy end-to-end learning architecture is proposed to compress the focused plenoptic images efficiently. First, a data preprocessing scheme is designed according to the imaging principle to remove the sub-aperture image ineffective pixels in the recorded light field and align the microimages to the rectangular grid. Then, the global attention module with large receptive field is proposed to capture the global correlation among the feature maps using pixel-wise vector attention computed in the resampling process. Also, a new image dataset consisting of 1910 focused plenoptic images with content and depth diversity is built to benefit training and testing. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. It outperforms intra coding of HEVC and VVC by an average of 62.57% and 51.67% bitrate reduction on the 20 preprocessed focused plenoptic images, respectively. Also, it achieves 18.73% bitrate saving and generates perceptually pleasant reconstructions compared to the state-of-the-art end-to-end image compression methods, which benefits the applications of focused plenoptic cameras greatly. Video frame interpolation(VFI) has witnessed great progress in recent years. While existing VFI models still struggle to achieve a good trade-off between accuracy and efficiency: fast models often have inferior accuracy; accurate models typically run slowly. However, easy samples with small motion or clear texture can achieve competitive results with simple models and do not require heavy computation. In this paper, we present an integrated pipeline which combines difficulty assessment with video frame interpolation. Specifically, it firstly leverages a pre-assessment model to measure the interpolation difficulty level of input frames, and then dynamically selects an appropriate VFI model to generate interpolation results. Furthermore, a large-scale VFI difficulty assessment dataset is collected and annotated to train our pre-assessment model. Extensive experiments show that easy samples pass through fast models while difficult samples inference with heavy models, and our proposed pipeline can improve the accuracy-efficiency trade-off for VFI.
Although computational aesthetics evaluation has made certain achievements in many fields, its research of music performance remains to be explored. At present, subjective evaluation is still a ultimate method of music aesthetics research, but it will consume a lot of human and material resources. In addition, the music performance generated by AI is still mechanical, monotonous and lacking in beauty. In order to guide the generation task of AI music performance, and to improve the performance effect of human performers, this paper uses Birkhoff's aesthetic measure to propose a method of objective measurement of beauty. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: Firstly, we put forward an objective aesthetic evaluation method to measure the music performance aesthetic; Secondly, we propose 10 basic music features and 4 aesthetic music features. Experiments show that our method performs well on performance assessment.
3D representation disentanglement aims to identify, decompose, and manipulate the underlying explanatory factors of 3D data, which helps AI fundamentally understand our 3D world. This task is currently under-explored and poses great challenges: (i) the 3D representations are complex and in general contains much more information than 2D image; (ii) many 3D representations are not well suited for gradient-based optimization, let alone disentanglement. To address these challenges, we use NeRF as a differentiable 3D representation, and introduce a self-supervised Navigation to identify interpretable semantic directions in the latent space. To our best knowledge, this novel method, dubbed NaviNeRF, is the first work to achieve fine-grained 3D disentanglement without any priors or supervisions. Specifically, NaviNeRF is built upon the generative NeRF pipeline, and equipped with an Outer Navigation Branch and an Inner Refinement Branch. They are complementary -- the outer navigation is to identify global-view semantic directions, and the inner refinement dedicates to fine-grained attributes. A synergistic loss is further devised to coordinate two branches. Extensive experiments demonstrate that NaviNeRF has a superior fine-grained 3D disentanglement ability than the previous 3D-aware models. Its performance is also comparable to editing-oriented models relying on semantic or geometry priors.
Modern image inpainting systems, despite the significant progress, often struggle with mask selection and holes filling. Based on Segment-Anything Model (SAM), we make the first attempt to the mask-free image inpainting and propose a new paradigm of ``clicking and filling'', which is named as Inpaint Anything (IA). The core idea behind IA is to combine the strengths of different models in order to build a very powerful and user-friendly pipeline for solving inpainting-related problems. IA supports three main features: (i) Remove Anything: users could click on an object and IA will remove it and smooth the ``hole'' with the context; (ii) Fill Anything: after certain objects removal, users could provide text-based prompts to IA, and then it will fill the hole with the corresponding generative content via driving AIGC models like Stable Diffusion; (iii) Replace Anything: with IA, users have another option to retain the click-selected object and replace the remaining background with the newly generated scenes.
