In this work, we investigate the effect of language models (LMs) with different context lengths and label units (phoneme vs. word) used in sequence discriminative training for phoneme-based neural transducers. Both lattice-free and N-best-list approaches are examined. For lattice-free methods with phoneme-level LMs, we propose a method to approximate the context history to employ LMs with full-context dependency. This approximation can be extended to arbitrary context length and enables the usage of word-level LMs in lattice-free methods. Moreover, a systematic comparison is conducted across lattice-free and N-best-list-based methods. Experimental results on Librispeech show that using the word-level LM in training outperforms the phoneme-level LM. Besides, we find that the context size of the LM used for probability computation has a limited effect on performance. Moreover, our results reveal the pivotal importance of the hypothesis space quality in sequence discriminative training.
Internal language model (ILM) subtraction has been widely applied to improve the performance of the RNN-Transducer with external language model (LM) fusion for speech recognition. In this work, we show that sequence discriminative training has a strong correlation with ILM subtraction from both theoretical and empirical points of view. Theoretically, we derive that the global optimum of maximum mutual information (MMI) training shares a similar formula as ILM subtraction. Empirically, we show that ILM subtraction and sequence discriminative training achieve similar performance across a wide range of experiments on Librispeech, including both MMI and minimum Bayes risk (MBR) criteria, as well as neural transducers and LMs of both full and limited context. The benefit of ILM subtraction also becomes much smaller after sequence discriminative training. We also provide an in-depth study to show that sequence discriminative training has a minimal effect on the commonly used zero-encoder ILM estimation, but a joint effect on both encoder and prediction + joint network for posterior probability reshaping including both ILM and blank suppression.
ChatGPT has gained significant interest due to its impressive performance, but people are increasingly concerned about its potential risks, particularly around the detection of AI-generated content (AIGC), which is often difficult for untrained humans to identify. Current datasets utilized for detecting ChatGPT-generated text primarily center around question-answering, yet they tend to disregard tasks that possess semantic-invariant properties, such as summarization, translation, and paraphrasing. Our primary studies demonstrate that detecting model-generated text on semantic-invariant tasks is more difficult. To fill this gap, we introduce a more extensive and comprehensive dataset that considers more types of tasks than previous work, including semantic-invariant tasks. In addition, the model after a large number of task instruction fine-tuning shows a strong powerful performance. Owing to its previous success, we further instruct fine-tuning Tk-instruct and built a more powerful detection system. Experimental results show that our proposed detector outperforms the previous state-of-the-art RoBERTa-based detector.
Motivated by the advances in deep learning techniques, the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based object detection has proliferated across a range of fields, including vehicle counting, fire detection, and city monitoring. While most existing research studies only a subset of the challenges inherent to UAV-based object detection, there are few studies that balance various aspects to design a practical system for energy consumption reduction. In response, we present the E3-UAV, an edge-based energy-efficient object detection system for UAVs. The system is designed to dynamically support various UAV devices, edge devices, and detection algorithms, with the aim of minimizing energy consumption by deciding the most energy-efficient flight parameters (including flight altitude, flight speed, detection algorithm, and sampling rate) required to fulfill the detection requirements of the task. We first present an effective evaluation metric for actual tasks and construct a transparent energy consumption model based on hundreds of actual flight data to formalize the relationship between energy consumption and flight parameters. Then we present a lightweight energy-efficient priority decision algorithm based on a large quantity of actual flight data to assist the system in deciding flight parameters. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the system, and our experimental results demonstrate that it can significantly decrease energy consumption in real-world scenarios. Additionally, we provide four insights that can assist researchers and engineers in their efforts to study UAV-based object detection further.
One major challenge in reinforcement learning (RL) is the large amount of steps for the RL agent needs to converge in the training process and learn the optimal policy, especially in text-based game environments where the action space is extensive. However, non-player characters (NPCs) sometimes hold some key information about the game, which can potentially help to train RL agents faster. Thus, this paper explores how to interact and converse with NPC agents to get the key information using large language models (LLMs), as well as incorporate this information to speed up RL agent's training using knowledge graphs (KGs) and Story Shaping.
Existing fine-grained intensity regulation methods rely on explicit control through predicted emotion probabilities. However, these high-level semantic probabilities are often inaccurate and unsmooth at the phoneme level, leading to bias in learning. Especially when we attempt to mix multiple emotion intensities for specific phonemes, resulting in markedly reduced controllability and naturalness of the synthesis. To address this issue, we propose the CAScaded Explicit and Implicit coNtrol framework (CASEIN), which leverages accurate disentanglement of emotion manifolds from the reference speech to learn the implicit representation at a lower semantic level. This representation bridges the semantical gap between explicit probabilities and the synthesis model, reducing bias in learning. In experiments, our CASEIN surpasses existing methods in both controllability and naturalness. Notably, we are the first to achieve fine-grained control over the mixed intensity of multiple emotions.
Dialogue response selection aims to select an appropriate response from several candidates based on a given user and system utterance history. Recent studies have been improving the accuracy of dialogue response selection through post-training, mostly relying on naive masked language modeling methods. However, the recently developed generative methods have shown promising text representation capabilities in IR community, which could potentially lead to better dialogue semantics modeling. Thus, in this paper, we propose Dial-MAE (Dialogue Contextual Masking Auto-encoder), a straightforward yet effective post-training technique tailored for dialogue response selection. Dial-MAE uses an asymmetric encoder-decoder architecture that learns to better compress the semantics of the dialogue into dialogue-dense vectors. The process of Dial-MAE involves a deep encoder creating a dialogue embedding with the masked dialogue context, followed by a shallow decoder that uses this embedding along with the highly masked response to restore the original response. Our experiments have demonstrated that Dial-MAE is highly effective, achieving state-of-the-art performance on two commonly evaluated benchmarks.
Extracting generalized and robust representations is a major challenge in emotion recognition in conversations (ERC). To address this, we propose a supervised adversarial contrastive learning (SACL) framework for learning class-spread structured representations. The framework applies contrast-aware adversarial training to generate worst-case samples and uses a joint class-spread contrastive learning objective on both original and adversarial samples. It can effectively utilize label-level feature consistency and retain fine-grained intra-class features. To avoid the negative impact of adversarial perturbations on context-dependent data, we design a contextual adversarial training strategy to learn more diverse features from context and enhance the model's context robustness. We develop a sequence-based method SACL-LSTM under this framework, to learn label-consistent and context-robust emotional features for ERC. Experiments on three datasets demonstrate that SACL-LSTM achieves state-of-the-art performance on ERC. Extended experiments prove the effectiveness of the SACL framework.
This paper describes our system designed for SemEval-2023 Task 12: Sentiment analysis for African languages. The challenge faced by this task is the scarcity of labeled data and linguistic resources in low-resource settings. To alleviate these, we propose a generalized multilingual system SACL-XLMR for sentiment analysis on low-resource languages. Specifically, we design a lexicon-based multilingual BERT to facilitate language adaptation and sentiment-aware representation learning. Besides, we apply a supervised adversarial contrastive learning technique to learn sentiment-spread structured representations and enhance model generalization. Our system achieved competitive results, largely outperforming baselines on both multilingual and zero-shot sentiment classification subtasks. Notably, the system obtained the 1st rank on the zero-shot classification subtask in the official ranking. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our system.
