In this paper, we investigate a cascaded channel estimation method for a millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the BS equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), where the BS and the RIS are both equipped with a uniform planar array (UPA). Due to the sparse property of mmWave channel, the channel estimation can be solved as a compressed sensing (CS) problem. However, the low-resolution quantization cause severe information loss of signals, and traditional CS algorithms are unable to work well. To recovery the signal and the sparse angular domain channel from quantization, we introduce Bayesian inference and efficient vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm to solve the quantize output CS problem. To further improve the efficiency of the VAMP algorithm, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based fast computation method is derived. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the accuracy of the proposed cascaded channel estimation method for the RIS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system with few-bit ADCs. Furthermore, the proposed channel estimation method can reach an acceptable performance gap between the low-resolution ADCs and the infinite ADCs for the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which implies the applicability of few-bit ADCs in practice.
The rapid development of the Large Language Model (LLM) presents huge opportunities for 6G communications, e.g., network optimization and management by allowing users to input task requirements to LLMs by nature language. However, directly applying native LLMs in 6G encounters various challenges, such as a lack of private communication data and knowledge, limited logical reasoning, evaluation, and refinement abilities. Integrating LLMs with the capabilities of retrieval, planning, memory, evaluation and reflection in agents can greatly enhance the potential of LLMs for 6G communications. To this end, we propose a multi-agent system with customized communication knowledge and tools for solving communication related tasks using natural language, comprising three components: (1) Multi-agent Data Retrieval (MDR), which employs the condensate and inference agents to refine and summarize communication knowledge from the knowledge base, expanding the knowledge boundaries of LLMs in 6G communications; (2) Multi-agent Collaborative Planning (MCP), which utilizes multiple planning agents to generate feasible solutions for the communication related task from different perspectives based on the retrieved knowledge; (3) Multi-agent Evaluation and Reflecxion (MER), which utilizes the evaluation agent to assess the solutions, and applies the reflexion agent and refinement agent to provide improvement suggestions for current solutions. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-agent system by designing a semantic communication system, as a case study of 6G communications.
This article delves into advancements in resource allocation techniques tailored for systems utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), with a primary focus on achieving low-complexity and resilient solutions. The investigation of low-complexity approaches for RIS holds significant relevance, primarily owing to the intricate characteristics inherent in RIS-based systems and the need of deploying large-scale RIS arrays. Concurrently, the exploration of robust solutions aims to address the issue of hardware impairments occurring at both the transceivers and RIS components in practical RIS-assisted systems. In the realm of both low-complexity and robust resource allocation, this article not only elucidates the fundamental techniques underpinning these methodologies but also offers comprehensive numerical results for illustrative purposes. The necessity of adopting resource allocation strategies that are both low in complexity and resilient is thoroughly established. Ultimately, this article provides prospective research avenues in the domain of low-complexity and robust resource allocation techniques tailored for RIS-assisted systems.
In this paper, we investigate a fluid antenna system (FAS)-assisted downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for short-packet communications. The base station (BS) adopts a single fixed antenna, while both the central user (CU) and the cell-edge user (CEU) are equipped with a FAS. Each FAS comprises $N$ flexible positions (also known as ports), linked to $N$ arbitrarily correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We derive expressions for the average block error rate (BLER) of the FAS-assisted NOMA system and provide asymptotic BLER expressions. We determine that the diversity order for CU and CEU is $N$, indicating that the system performance can be considerably improved by increasing $N$. Simulation results validate the great performance of FAS.
This paper investigates the efficacy of utilizing fluid antenna system (FAS) at a legitimate monitor to oversee suspicious communication. The monitor switches the antenna position to minimize its outage probability for enhancing the monitoring performance. Our objective is to maximize the average monitoring rate, whose expression involves the integral of the first-order Marcum $Q$ function. The optimization problem, as initially posed, is non-convex owing to its objective function. Nevertheless, upon substituting with an upper bound, we provide a theoretical foundation confirming the existence of a unique optimal solution for the modified problem, achievable efficiently by the bisection search method. Furthermore, we also introduce a locally closed-form optimal resolution for maximizing the average monitoring rate. Empirical evaluations confirm that the proposed schemes outperform conventional benchmarks considerably.
This letter investigates a fluid antenna system (FAS) where multiple ports can be activated for signal combining for enhanced receiver performance. Given $M$ ports at the FAS, the best $K$ ports out of the $M$ available ports are selected before maximum ratio combining (MRC) is used to combine the received signals from the selected ports. The aim of this letter is to study the achievable performance of FAS when more than one ports can be activated. We do so by analyzing the outage probability of this setup in Rayleigh fading channels through the utilization of Gauss-Chebyshev integration, lower bound estimation, and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) asymptotic approximations. Our analytical results demonstrate that FAS can harness rich spatial diversity, which is confirmed by computer simulations.
Multimodal signals, including text, audio, image and video, can be integrated into Semantic Communication (SC) for providing an immersive experience with low latency and high quality at the semantic level. However, the multimodal SC has several challenges, including data heterogeneity, semantic ambiguity, and signal fading. Recent advancements in large AI models, particularly in Multimodal Language Model (MLM) and Large Language Model (LLM), offer potential solutions for these issues. To this end, we propose a Large AI Model-based Multimodal SC (LAM-MSC) framework, in which we first present the MLM-based Multimodal Alignment (MMA) that utilizes the MLM to enable the transformation between multimodal and unimodal data while preserving semantic consistency. Then, a personalized LLM-based Knowledge Base (LKB) is proposed, which allows users to perform personalized semantic extraction or recovery through the LLM. This effectively addresses the semantic ambiguity. Finally, we apply the Conditional Generative adversarial networks-based channel Estimation (CGE) to obtain Channel State Information (CSI). This approach effectively mitigates the impact of fading channels in SC. Finally, we conduct simulations that demonstrate the superior performance of the LAM-MSC framework.
Next-generation edge intelligence is anticipated to bring huge benefits to various applications, e.g., offloading systems. However, traditional deep offloading architectures face several issues, including heterogeneous constraints, partial perception, uncertain generalization, and lack of tractability. In this context, the integration of offloading with large language models (LLMs) presents numerous advantages. Therefore, we propose an LLM-Based Offloading (LAMBO) framework for mobile edge computing (MEC), which comprises four components: (i) Input embedding (IE), which is used to represent the information of the offloading system with constraints and prompts through learnable vectors with high quality; (ii) Asymmetric encoderdecoder (AED) model, which is a decision-making module with a deep encoder and a shallow decoder. It can achieve high performance based on multi-head self-attention schemes; (iii) Actor-critic reinforcement learning (ACRL) module, which is employed to pre-train the whole AED for different optimization tasks under corresponding prompts; and (iv) Active learning from expert feedback (ALEF), which can be used to finetune the decoder part of the AED while adapting to dynamic environmental changes. Our simulation results corroborate the advantages of the proposed LAMBO framework.
Semantic communication (SC) is an emerging intelligent paradigm, offering solutions for various future applications like metaverse, mixed-reality, and the Internet of everything. However, in current SC systems, the construction of the knowledge base (KB) faces several issues, including limited knowledge representation, frequent knowledge updates, and insecure knowledge sharing. Fortunately, the development of the large AI model provides new solutions to overcome above issues. Here, we propose a large AI model-based SC framework (LAM-SC) specifically designed for image data, where we first design the segment anything model (SAM)-based KB (SKB) that can split the original image into different semantic segments by universal semantic knowledge. Then, we present an attention-based semantic integration (ASI) to weigh the semantic segments generated by SKB without human participation and integrate them as the semantic-aware image. Additionally, we propose an adaptive semantic compression (ASC) encoding to remove redundant information in semantic features, thereby reducing communication overhead. Finally, through simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the LAM-SC framework and the significance of the large AI model-based KB development in future SC paradigms.
In this paper, we consider an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)-enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer(SWIPT) system with multiple ground users. Compared with the conventional passive RIS, the active RIS deploying the internally integrated amplifiers can offset part of the multiplicative fading. In this system, we deal with an optimization problem of minimizing the total energy cost of the UAV. Specifically, we alternately optimize the trajectories, the hovering time, and the reflection vectors at the active RIS by using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Simulation results show that the active RIS performs better in energy saving than the conventional passive RIS.
